Dylan Redwine Case Discussion Thread/Dylan's Remains Found

This drainage area where Dylan was found: it is alongside a trail, correct? is the trail wide enough to accomadate a vehicle? How far is the trail from a parking area or the closest street?
While they haven't said exactly where the location is, I posted some maps of my best guess of the area based on pictures I've seen in the Media Thread. The road up is very windy, and looks like one of those gravel and dirt fire roads. There are a lot of off road truck and atv trails in the area off the main road. If you have a 4X4 and know what you are doing, you could get to a lot of places. It would be tough to traverse while snowy or soggy wet, which is probably why they waited until they could go through the area without trashing the trails.

For those wondering why they searched Middle Mountain, Sgt Bender spoke to the Durango Herald and I transcribed some of that interview regarding why the search there.

At 01:25...Reporter "Can you give us more of an exact location where the remains were found?"
Bender "Middle Mountain Road is about 12 miles long and we searched that by/through the entirety. We also searched/checked drainage's off either side and it was in one of those drainage's that we found the majority of the items."
At 01:48...Reporter "What prompted the search of that area?"
Bender "We, from the very beginning, have had a/specific areas that we wanted to search. We searched those in November and December. When snows came we could not get any further than we had and when the snows melted we...actually have been doing searches almost on a weekly bases since the snows have cleared and Middle Mountain was just one more of those areas we wanted to check."

At 03:12...Bender "The search at Middle Mountain had been planned for at least 2-4 weeks because we wanted to have it so thorough, we needed specific resources and for people to be able to plan their schedules to be able to be up there potentially for multiple days as it turned out it was 5 days. We had on each day an average of about 45 people in the searches. They included search and rescue personnel and LE personnel."

Here's where I read it. Thanks OtherEyes.

So the "about half way up Middle Mountain Rd. would be roughly 6 miles where Dylan was found? I really hate to say this but was he thrown from the road down a cliff or mountain side? It sounds like it to me right now. gah

thanks! Once I heard that it was a service road- I figure CO service roads can't be too different than our fire service roads. They tend to be dirt or gravel and wide enough for a truck, although the way might be rough or bumpy.

I was curious because of the accessibility for the possible perp. Most locals in my area know where the service roads are and sometimes they are on maps as well. Sad to say someone probably drove Dylan up there knowing it was going to be a deserted place with no witnesses and it would be awhile before he was discovered. It would take little physical effort on the perp's part.
Earlier when I thought it was a trail, rather than a road, I had some other conclusions.

I'm relieved for his loved ones that Dylan has been found, so many families anguish for years and years not knowing. It doesn't lessen the sadness and heartache but he can finally be brought home.

Rest in Peace young man, you touched so many :rose:

This news has left me stunned. I don't know why, as I guess we all knew (even if it was very deep down) that this was how Dylan would eventually turn up. But even so, I feel totally shocked. I guess its because whenever I think of Dylan, I have always thought of him as a boy - flesh and blood, so full of life ....... and then the reality of what has been discovered today is just like a body blow. I can't explain it really.

I'm sure lots, if not all, of us have special cases we follow .... certain people we get close to ..... and then when they are found like this, it hurts. As a mom of boys, I always followed Dylan's case closely and I guess it is because I have a son this age, that this one hit me hard.

Poor Dylan, I'm so sorry that this had to happen to you. Saying "rest in peace" sounds hollow - you shouldn't be resting, you should be running around, jumping in the rivers you loved, playing sport, having fun on your bike, fishing, camping, hiking .... living basically. Its too soon for you to be resting.

Off topic slightly, but I wonder what or who the dogs hit on at the lake? They seemed so certain that someone was definitely in there.

The 5:00 news had a telephone interview with Melissa B and MR.

Yes, I don't remember if it was Melissa or MR that said it but after LE told MR about their findings LE showed MR pictures of some of the remains. One can only speculate as to why unless MR asked to see. Seems cruel if he had not asked to see them.

I've been trying to see if they have put that online yet but no luck so far.

That was a beautiful post Smooth! Every word of it was meaningful and so well said.

Ttc, did you ketchup?

I don't live in the area, but I'm great with maps and know off road trails. The road deadends further north, so it'd be one way in, one way out on the main road (could be some other alternatives by the trails). This is the kind of area I'd go off-roading in for fun, and the trails I can see on the maps indicate locals do, too. It is my belief that Dylan was left here (he did not hike here) and whomever did it was very familiar with the area and when people would/would not be around.

I visited my local news station website and saw the headline. So very sad!

RIP Dylan

Disregard my last questions this explains it all!

Was this snow there when Dylan went missing or did it come after?

I believe the snow came after, but I am not a local. When the media had pictures of MR's house right after Dylan disappeared, his yard was free of snow at that time. Middle Mountain is only 10 miles or so away FWIW.

ETA: From what I transcribed up further Bender did say... "We, from the very beginning, have had a/specific areas that we wanted to search. We searched those in November and December. Sorry if this comes out sounding cold, but tact isn't one of my strong points. I'm not at all surprised that Dylan is dead, but I'm very surprised that they found his remains. I think it says a lot for the LE there to be able to find one little boy and all/many of his belongings in that large area. Between the woods, hills, ravines and everything else, I think they deserve a lot of credit for bringing him home. I hope we'll also soon be in awe of how quickly they have a suspect jailed and charged. R.I.P.

If the drainage was off the West side of the mountain, remains and other items probably washed down the drainage areas, possibly into the river, and down into Vallecito Reservoir. The runoff alone could have carried the scent to the reservoir. I happen to believe some dogs are that good (being as I have seen it). JMO.

I googled the distance from Marks house to the area I believe was the search base. It is 9.2 miles and 29 minutes to get there, probably due to the road conditions and twist and turns in the road. (See attachment).

To go as the crow flies would take you across the river, and up some steep and overgrown areas. It is not an area people would casually hike in.

In addition, it was mentioned by Lt. Bender that the items were found in a drainage area, so it is doubtful anyone would be casually hiking up that. (see zoomed attachment)

Thanks for the great maps. I remain mountain confused, however.

To what is the sheriff referring when he speaks of searching all the drainage areas? Creeks? Low-lying areas at the base of cliffs? Eroded water pathways?

I notice that there are creeks at what appear to be the base of the area surrounding the Middle Mountain Road. Do these flow into Vallecito Reservoir? During the snow melt is the current strong enough and the depth deep enough to carry larger object to the lake?

I would appreciate your insight if you or anyone has some. Thanks!

IIRC it was said that they starting searching that area last year until it started snowing. They had to call it off until it became accessible again.

I read it as his remains were found in the ditch right beside the mountain road. Doesn't seem like a very "smart" place to leave his body.

With them saying so soon that this is a criminal investigation... makes me think there was clear evidence that is apparent without an autopsy (being shot comes to mind).

They said half way up the mountain, but didn't want to get too specific. That sounds pretty specific to me. Are the trails that run off the road labelled?

Where I live, they call the drainage areas the places where either erosion has left a ditch or a natural area where the rain will runoff down the side of a mountain. I assume it is something like this here, too. While it is possible the drainage they are referring to is off the East side, and COULD get to the reservoir if there was enough runoff, the west side would definitely go to the river (I don't know the name of the river, must-go-look) and get to the reservoir. That particular river sometimes runs whitewater, which indicates it has a pretty good current, at least at times. Depending on the depth of the river bed, and the speed of the water, it could carry, or even just push, quite a few things either to the lake, or to any location in the river (where an item could get stuck or stuck for a while then move on, only to get stuck again or continue on) JMO based on walking through and rafting down rivers.

Sometimes you hear news...go about your day...thinking, thinking, thinking. Then put ya watering hose down, grab ya phone...and post stuff.

Rest in peace, little Dylan Redwine. So many people thought about you, prayed for you. Smile down upon us, in the very happy place we KNOW you are!

Idle speculation:

I wonder if LE is going to release more details or are they going to be quiet? I guess that depends on if they have a suspect or not.

I think they will remain mostly silent unless/until they have enough evidence to arrest someone, or know they don't have enough evidence and need any help that might be available from the public.
