Ebola outbreak - general thread #4

Is anyone else buying a few "basics" just in case we have a problem? Ebola or even a nasty flu virus?

So far this is my list:
Latex Gloves
10 pack of surgical face masks
Container of Clorox Germicidal w/Bleach wipes (for the car, to clean gloves before removing)
A pair of 18" black PVC Gloves (only $4.99 on Amazon)
Some heavy duty plastic bags to use as disposable shoe covers
Spray Bottle of Alcohol
Eye Protection (Safety or shooting glasses)
A couple of gallons of bleach (with a distant expiration date)
Optional: Dupont Chem Suit with Hoodie ($14.99)

The way I see it everything on the list can be used around the house even if it is not needed as a precaution against disease.

Are the pvc gloves and the suit re-usable?

In Germany, a man infected in Liberia arrived Thursday at a hospital for treatment -- the third Ebola patient to be flown to the country.

The St. Georg Hospital in Leipzig said the man, who works for the United Nations in Liberia and whose name was not given, will be placed in a special isolation unit.

Three doctors have been admitted to the Madrid hospital for precautionary observation, bringing to seven the number being monitored at the center, health officials said Thursday.

I have not bought those items but I had some left over from bird flu :) ( which, let me remind everyone was not too terribly bad after all ) But I did stock up on my natural virus remedies and herbs. Made several bottles of " Master Tonic'' this week . I would for flu season anyway but I made extra to give friends.

Check on latex, they me be not be best.
I work with flowers and get dermatitis when handling a certain one.
Latex don't work for me--get surgical gloves 2 cents.

eta: looking at the box now. Medi Pak vinyl exam gloves

I plan to reuse the pvc gloves, they are heavy duty work gloves made for handling chemicals and such, I like the fact they go up your arm.

The chem suit could be re-useable but honestly I can't imagine wearing one as it is so darn ugly (unless you planned to care for victims).

Great news right here :)

Hospital says Dallas deputy's condition is good... no fever, vomiting or diarrhea.. NOT consistent with early signs of Ebola. http://bit.ly/1yQFrtT

( if you click the link it goes to a story about duncan and not the deputy )

Just jumping of your post...

Really, I wish media / officials / anyone would not compare this to Aids.

I understand how this guy is comparing it to aids, originating in Africa and the world slow to react to it, yada yada, but if people start getting it in their head that this is "just like aids", they're going to have it in their thinking that it's only transmitted via sexual contact or contact with blood products.

This is worse than aids in terms of ease of transmission and how quickly it acts.

Sorry, I just think it's a dangerous comparison to make and I wish they wouldn't do it. Not everyone is out there reading up on exactly what Ebola is and how you catch it, and if all they hear is "this is just like Aids", they're going to think it's "just like aids" in more ways than one.

I haven't just because I figure if this thing gets anywhere near here, I'm just not going anywhere...lol (as if it was just that simple).

It is my understanding that the hazmat crew was there to sanitize the room, equipment & dispose of the bedding in the room where Duncan died, not the ER.

oh thank gosh!

So thankful that none of the immediate family or healthcare people that had direct contact with him have shown symptoms yet! It is really quite amazing!

I always keep this stuff on hand , you never know, right! Add chlorine too !

Shaking my head...I can't understand why this deputy went to the CareNow facility - from your article (trigger) above;
(portion bold/underlined by NMS)

News 8's Jason Whitely spoke to Chuck Moreno, who had gone into the CareNow facility with his 15-year-old son to get a flu shot Wednesday.
Moreno said he saw a patient, whose skin was flushed and who was hunched over but walking, enter the clinic with his wife.
Within minutes, police and fire units surrounded the facility, taped off a gray SUV, and isolated other patients at the facility.
Moreno asked a CareNow employee if it was related to Ebola, and he said the employee nodded her head "yes."
Moreno said he and his son quarantined themselves into an examination room, put on surgical masks they found in the room and sprayed disinfectant on themselves.
Moreno said staff told them he and his son couldn't leave the clinic and would be transferred to a major medical center, but he was unsure which one at the time.

I can't even imagine the level of fear and panic this Dad was experiencing!

Kelly: Southcom Keeps Watch on Ebola Situation

By Jim Garamone
DoD News, Defense Media Activity
WASHINGTON, Oct. 8, 2014 – The potential spread of Ebola into Central and Southern America is a real possibility, the commander of U.S. Southern Command told an audience at the National Defense University here yesterday.

“By the end of the year, there’s supposed to be 1.4 million people infected with Ebola and 62 percent of them dying, according to the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention],” Marine Corps Gen. John F. Kelly said. “That’s horrific. And there is no way we can keep Ebola [contained] in West Africa.”

This is a particularly possible scenario if the disease gets to Haiti or Central America, he said. If the disease gets to countries like Guatemala, Honduras or El Salvador, it will cause a panic and people will flee the region, the general said.

“If it breaks out, it’s literally, ‘Katie bar the door,’ and there will be mass migration into the United States,” Kelly said. “They will run away from Ebola, or if they suspect they are infected, they will try to get to the United States for treatment.”

This scenario is chilling, not only because of the threat of their immigrating into the US, but because of the response from Mexican... "LE".

A lot of innocent, healthy people could be shot trying to cross through there to get here.

Information/details on the hospital the military is setting up. Very informative. MOO

From your link:

The team includes about 350 U.S. military personnel. The Pentagon expects to eventually deploy slightly more than 4,000 personnel to West Africa.

snip...

The White House said the U.S. has committed more than $350 million to fighting the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, including more than $111 million by civilian agencies. The Defense Department plans to spend more than $1 billion on its operations there.
