Ebola outbreak - general thread #7

Brings up a point I've been thinking on . If two nurses with protective gear ( you can argue it was inadequate if you like ) did get ebola from Duncan and not ONE of the family members inside the apartment with no protective gear did, then what kind of diligent care was Louise taking? I mean think about that. She had to have been literally on top of that situation to protect herself and the kids . And apparently it is no small task and she pulled it off. I wonder if she knew/ learned/heard preventive techniques from family back in Liberia on what to do about it. Either way, if they truly are symptom free and remain so, she's a bad a$$ !

It is surprising, quite frankly, that Louise in particular remains healthy.

Also to consider is that as the disease progresses, the amount of virus in the body fluids increases to incredible amounts. The nurses were caring for him during that time, potentially with either inadequate equipment or with equipment which malfunctioned.

Well, if one of these people does get Ebola, it will be a huge deal. Authorities are not going to be able to avoid dealing with the fact that 21 days in quarantine doesn't guarantee a 100 % a person won't get Ebola.

I agree. I don't believe 21 days is long enough. I realize that comes with a host of potential (economic) ramifications for those affected...but this is serious.

Back in the beginning she commented that Duncan was very clean in regards to using the bathroom. I have thought about that many times since then. <modsnip>

Sorry, I can't remember the exact words used. It very strongly implied that middle-school kids are not the kindest humans on earth & are capable of vicious actions. It may not be the PC thing to say, but in my experiences, it is the truth. They are particularly concerned about Louise's 12 year old son who will soon be returning to school. I think somewhere up-thread there is a link to the live streaming of the news conference & it will probably continue to re-run for a while.

Ah - get you.

Sadly true - not sure it could be regarded as un-PC to suggest that school children can be very cruel - I think we've probably all witnessed it ourselves at some stage in our school days.

CNN: I just heard Carol Costello comment about the attorney representing Amber Vinson, saying what I heard as "these are no or low class people" how can they afford the attorney! Did anyone else hear this.? Thanks

I have no idea what was said, but first of all that would be extremely inappropriate no matter their SES, but aside from that, isn't this family extremely well educated and associated closely with Kent State University?

Why are we not getting updated on the status of Nina and Amber? Maybe we are and I just can't find it. Why did we get regular updates on Duncan, and not on these nurses? I don't see why these is a privacy matter.

My understanding is that 95% of cases occur within this 21 day period. Which is why they decided to go with this period for quarantine.
But some cases do occur after 21 days. So the risk is not at zero.

I recall reading 12% occurred after the 21 days.

I think you misheard. I believe Amber has SEVEN bridesmaids for her wedding so someone in that family has money. Yes I realize bridesmaids usually pay for their own dresses but that implies a LARGE wedding.

Maybe it was a joint effort by them both , but they seemed to have pulled it off. It's been forever and I mean years since I had a horrible stomach virus ( knock on wood) but we all know there are some bugs that no matter what kind of efforts you make, there will be messes. I would imagine ebola is that kind x 100. So whatever happened inside that apartment , someone was doing something right. OR as I mentioned before, they had guardian angels watching over them. Amazing !

Maybe Duncan gave permission to have his status updated and these two have not?

In the 45 minute WFAA interview with Dr. Gary Weinstein, a critical care pulmonologist who cared for Duncan and the two nurses before they were transferred, the reporter stated that they were unable to discuss the care of Ms. Vinson because she had not given them permission to do so.

It's her right under the HIPAA law.

The study I read stated 0.1%-12%, which is a pretty wide range. Seems clear that additional study needs to be done to nail that down better.

Ebola patient Amber Joy Vinson's mother came into contact with Kent State University President Beverly Warren on Tuesday before being alerted that her daughter was diagnosed with the disease, officials said.

"The CDC has no guidelines on issues of contacts of contacts," Mansfield said.

Yes they are! I hope I can find a transcript but then it could be cleaned up. I clearly heard the word "class" but unsure if it followed "low or no" but sure I heard one or the other. She has made distasteful comments on other news items and for a while I stopped watching her segment.

I think it's highly inappropriate to call anyone "low class people."
Regardless, in these type of cases, lawyers are either working pro bono, or ask for a percentage of the award. They don't ask for money up front.

I suspect that many would regard anyone making a comment about class like that as lacking rather a lot in the class stakes themselves.

Carol Costello clearly stated to the effect of "how the family can afford that attorney".

The difference in 3% and 12 % is a lot and the implications are very , very scary if it's 12% .... yikes !

The studies I read said 12% don't have fevers, and somewhere around 3-5% show symptoms after 21 days (that could depend on the strain).

I don't know how it is in the UK but here in the US the schools are severely limited in the discipline measures they can take against offenders of any kind. I wouldn't be a teacher here for $1million a day. Very sad situation.

OT

Things are pretty grim for teachers here too - so discipline does seem to be declining.

We have had three seasons of a documentary series going inside secondary schools and I have to admit to being totally shocked at the way the children can now behave. Talking back, mucking about in class, answering back, getting into fights.

I don't know why things were so different when I was at school, but we simply would not have dreamt of behaving that way and if we had been out of line, then we would have been in line for a second ear-bashing from our parents. Too many parents these days are almost as bad if not worse than their children (which explains a lot about the children's behaviour!).

A sad state of affairs - no wonder so many children fail to reach their potential when actually paying attention and doing the work seems to be optional rather than the norm.
