Ebola outbreak - general thread #7

Interesting point. We just assume we will be updated on all of the conditions but legally it is not our right to know. So has Nurse 1 given permission to doctors and staff to report her condition? If Nurse 2 said she wants it private, would it remain private? Hippa laws I understand but am not sure if anything about this situation, like public safety, can override hippa laws. Experts weigh in please . If this was discussed pages ago, I'm sorry. tia

Updates on Amber's condition is not a matter of public safety. It was already reported that she has Ebola, her movements while infected and her transfer to Atlanta. There is no "need to know" at this point and it really isn't any of our business. I think if she or her family say they don't want info released, it will not be released. Her family might want to keep her name out of the news as much as possible. After all, there are a lot of people who are very critical of her choice to travel when she was at risk of contracting the virus.

Passengers aboard a chartered bus carrying members of the military and others related to them tell FOX 5 a woman they didn't know boarded th bus, went to the back and went in the bathroom. That woman was apparently vomiting, and told authorities she recently traveled to Africa.

The passengers told FOX 5 they were headed to a change of command ceremony at Barracks Row, and that the woman was not part of their group. Authorities say the bus driver didn't know about the woman's claims that she had been to Africa recently, and he proceeded with his route after she got off. The bus was stopped after the driver was notified by emergency officials of the Ebola concern.

''Eight members of a team trying to raise awareness about Ebola have been killed by villagers using machetes and clubs in Guinea, officials say.

Some of the bodies - of health workers, local officials and journalists - were found in a septic tank in a village school near the city of Nzerekore.

Correspondents say many villagers are suspicious of official attempts to combat the disease'''

Bringing over the link to the story about the two male strippers that were on the plane with Amber. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/nat...source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=NYDailyNewsTw

There is a link to the FB page that Hiandmighty posted above about his reaction to finding out that he might have been exposed.

I'm annoyed by the wording in this story that they "were placed" in voluntary isolation. No, they "placed themselves" in isolation! Because they are smart and considerate!

I was just wondering this myself. There are many families who cannot survive 3 weeks of no work and there are many jobs who will not tolerate 3 weeks of no work. Will their jobs take them back after missing 3 weeks? Or will their jobs be too afraid to let them come back at all? Messy!

I read somewhere that the Family Leave Act covers them in terms of insuring that their jobs are still open when they return. Of course that does not cover the fact that employers might be too afraid to let them back to work. Such a sad situation for those people living paycheck-to-paycheck. Three weeks without pay is a long time. Hopefully there are social service agencies, volunteer groups and organizations such as the Red Cross that are working on helping to alleviate the financial pardon.

Is it just me or does it always seem like friends or cohorts get these jobs instead of perhaps selecting the most qualified person to do it.

I just hope he is qualified.

I'm sure is as qualified as every person in DC is qualified for their jobs (((roll eyes)))

I agree. I am very impressed by these two gentlemen.

And THIS is why no U.S. attempts to help in West Africa are going to be successful. The very nature of the population is to kill those who try to help because they perceive the "help" as attempts to circumvent local customs.

I respectfully disagree with that statement. It is a gross over generalization of the population of West Africa. That's like saying all Americans are gang members.

Please provide a link to back up this information. Otherwise, it is your opinion.

So she just randomly got on the bus (((where?))), went to the bathroom, threw up, and hopped back off. Then, authorities notified the bus driver that the random lady who got on the bus to puke had recently been to Africa.

Um what?!?!? How did "authorities" know some random woman got on the bus and puked and left and that she had been to Africa? Is this the most poorly worded news story in history?

Please get back on topic and move on from the male models.

Gang members are rarely interested or involved with trying to help a country trying to overcome a fatal and incurable disease.

Here's a direct quote from the article previously posted:

"Eight members of a team trying to raise awareness about Ebola have been killed by villagers using machetes and clubs in Guinea, officials say.

It's a relatively old article considering how fast this disease and news reporting is progressing, but it's STILL indicative of how many people in West Africa don't really WANT help from the U.S. or anyone else.

The fact that a medical team was killed by machetes and clubs is somewhat indicative that SOME view help as evil rather than helpful.

Unless under contract the jobs can replace them. Some may or may not have sick leave and/or vacation. FML may be available to some but that does not come with pay. Then, fraud will rear its ugly head if the government was to cover lost pay. What a mess!!

It seems the Spanish nurse with ebola has also requested privacy. The last update I could find with a quick search was from last Thursday (over a week ago), and her condition at that time had worsened. Anyone have more current information? Perhaps someone who reads Spanish could find something as maybe the case has local coverage?

What's the difference between "screened" positive and "tested" positive? Or do they mean the same thing?
