Great news for the 5 yr old ! ! !

The people that signed up to assist with the ebola effort knew EXACTLY what they were getting into. There are risks to personal health and safety and they signed up exactly for that. Does being a humanitarian stop when they arrive home? Why should an unsuspecting public who hasn't "signed up" for the risks be exposed to them simply because someone who did chose to return home?

Your are spot on. I totally agree. If they come to NJ, they are going to be quaranteed.

It certainly is good news for the 5 year old - and for some reason the media is not catching on the pattern. This is the pattern houndreds of "fever' and Ebola testing. And endlessly they all have had an infection of another kind. WHy is not media not grasping this - as mentioned there is one case in US.

Let just look at the facts, like I wish the media should, and they should be reporting this, its factual info:

700 Borders folk went over there ------------------ 3 gotten Ebola

Amber Vinson hasn't been released yet.

Just remember that there are asymptomatic cases of ebola and also that bodily fluids such as semen have been found to carry the ebola virus for 7 weeks.

Glad the little guy is ok and hope he wasn't afraid of the hazmat suits. Hope they played Bud Lightyear or astronaut or something to keep him humored. Peds develop high fevers with just about everything. Just so relieved.

The facts:
Cases of Ebola Outside of West Africa:

9 people have been infected in USA ,6 have recovered, two in tx, 1 passed.
1 Indiv in France recovered
3 Spain 2 passed
3 Germany 1 passed one rcovered, one in tx
1 Noway recovered
1 Britain recovered

Or to put it another way, outside of Africa, on the planet, 4 human beings have died from the Ebola virus.

6 Americans have contracted Ebola over there and returned here.

We can also say , correctly that US, France Spain Germany NOrway Britain and Nigeria have contained the virus.

70 percent of patients (in places outside Africa) are treated in settings that confine the illness
About 18 percent of patients in Liberia " "
40 percent in Sierra Leone are being treated in appropriate settings.

How on earth has the media turned this into this circus?

This IMO is where the media is losing the story:

Officials have emphasized that there is no risk of transmission from people who have been exposed to the virus but are not yet showing symptoms.

It makes sense , how could someone transmit something that has yet to manifest itself? IMO the media is nutsola!

Google
7.125 billion (2013) on the planet - I would hate to see media reporting on something that really is out of control.IMO

Bright : That is stunning: An article I linked earlier said that 77% of Liberians with Ebola aren't getting any form of treatment.

Amber Vinson hasn't been released yet.

Of course I don't know, but I assume since it has been reported that she no longer tests positive for ebola, she is simply recovering her strength.

Exposed is not being reproted correctly in the media

We all are exposed to dozens of pathogins a day - exposed. Means nothing different for Ebola than any other infection.

The Ebola virus infects by entering a host cell and releasing a small piece of viral RNA.A host cell is inside a human.

In any illiness the body tries to fight with antibodies.

It makes total sense that noone can be contagious unless there is a sympton( the body starting to get infected, and in order to try and protect itslef starts a fever).

How could anyone be contagious with any infection, it the virus or bacteria has not started to replicate and attack? It does not work that way wiht anything else nor Ebola.

Exposed only means that.

Symptoms usually begin about eight to 10 days after exposure to the virus. It takes time for any virus to replicate enough to start casueing symptoms.

It starts like any other infection. a headache, fever and aches and pains. That is more IMO, a result of the fever beginning. Fever from anything results in a headache, fever and aches and pains.

Diarrhea and vomiting follow. This makes sense , as it replicates, and viral loads get higher and higher, the body then tries to rid itself of it by Diarrhea and vomiting. Expel.

And finally, blood vessels deep in the body begin leaking fluid, causing blood pressure to plummet so low that the heart, kidneys, liver and other organs begin to fail. This too makes sense as it relates to the end stage being the most contagious.

SInce the virus is in the blood, and blood is leaking out of blood vessels into surrounding tissues it makes sense. It is like a paper towel put over spilled mustard.

THe liklihood of getting mustard on ones hand is more likely when handling the paper towel that has mustard all over it as oppossed to a spot of mustard on a counter.

IMO

[h=3]The Middle Ages[/h]The practice of quarantine, as we know it, began during the 14th century in an effort to protect coastal cities from plague epidemics. Ships arriving in Venice from infected ports were required to sit at anchor for 40 days before landing. This practice, called quarantine, was derived from the Italian words quaranta giorni which mean 40 days.

Early AMerican

yellow fever finally prompted Congress to pass federal quarantine legislation in 1878. This legislation, while not conflicting with states' rights, paved the way for federal involvement in quarantine activities.

[h=3]19th Century[/h]Outbreaks of cholera from passenger ships arriving from Europe ........ in imposing quarantine requirements. The following year, Congress passed legislation that further clarified the federal role in quarantine activities. As local authorities came to realize the benefits of federal involvement, local quarantine stations were gradually turned over to the U.S. government. Additional federal facilities were built and the number of staff was increased to provide better coverage. The quarantine system was fully nationalized by 1921 when administration of the last quarantine station was transferred to the U.S. government.

The Public Health Service Act of 1944 clearly established the federal government's quarantine authority for the first time. The act gave the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) responsibility for preventing the introduction, transmission, and spread of communicable diseases from foreign countries into the United States.

The new focus included an enhanced surveillance system to monitor the onset of epidemics abroad and a modernized inspection process to meet the changing needs of international traffic.
By 1995, all U.S. ports of entry were covered by only seven quarantine stations. A station was added in 1996 in Atlanta, Georgia, just before the city hosted the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. Following the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic of 2003, CDC reorganized the quarantine station system, expanding to 18 stations with more than 90 field employees.

Many other illnesses of public health signficance, such as measles, mumps, rubella, and chicken pox, are not contained in the list of quarantinable illnesses, but continue to pose a health risk to the public.

Phenergan, Zofran, etc??

^^^Yeah, maybe. Here we would use IV fluid rather than forcing orals. But these communities are using whatever resources they can get. It's very encouraging to see headway being made. I've read they are also trying to put into place the means to use survivor plasma. Goodness knows they've got thousands of survivors in west Africa.

Maybe keeping the patient hydrated and electrolytes normal helps to avoid some of the nausea/vomiting.
Sounds like it.

And if you don't start right away? "You'll soon become, in a few days, too weak to drink it," he says. And if you become dehydrated, your gut won't be able to absorb the nutrients.

"They'll just come back up," he says.

Mod note: Statements/announcements from political figures about ebola (President, mayor, governor, etc.) belong in the following thread:

The Ebola thread in the 'Up to the Minute' area concerns discussion about the disease itself and the efforts to contain it and control it's spread. Please bump this post up as necessary, apparently we have members new to the thread who have not seen the many reminders.

Quarantining is an effort to control the spread.
