Ebola outbreak - general thread #9

The ER nurses interviewed on 60 minutes stated that they looked up the CDC protocols when Duncan was brought in by ambulance.

I'm thinking that was what they printed up for Nina, not just some random Google hit. Again, that sounds like lawyer speak to me, using intentionally inflammatory language. JMO.

ITA. Inflammatory to the point it makes it sound like she was working in a tent in Africa and improvising.

We shall see. Nina is stating that she didn't give permission, period. PHD says she did.

I'm hoping to see the legal documents, though I suppose we won't if they settle.

Asking mod for dedicated thread for this ....

If Nina's lawsuit proceeds, she may need to re-think some of the wording in her suit with regard to "never having received any education as to caring for people with infectious disease," which is, as I said earlier, something she should have arrived with as someone with a Bachelor's in nursing and a RN license. Expecting the hospital to provide remedial education may not fly in the lawsuit.

From a representative of TCU, the prestigious and expensive private school where she got her nursing education:

Pham, 26, is a 2010 graduate of the Bachelors of Science in Nursing program at Texas Christian University, according to Lisa Albert, a spokesperson for the school. The four-year program prepares nurses to serve as “liaisons among doctors, patients and other members of the health care team,” according to the school website.

There is not a stand-alone course on infections disease work, but infection prevention strategies are "woven throughout all clinical coursework," according to Albert. Precautionary methods are introduced at the start of clinical course work, reviewed through the curriculum, and students sign an end-of-semester document attesting to this work.

I think she needs to completely remove the complaint that she had never received any education about infectious disease and stick to the point that she had not been properly trained in ebola care before being given the assignment. The fact that basically no other nurses outside of the four specialty units in the US had been given that training either may not really be relevant legally in order for her to receive compensation.

American who contracted Ebola arrives at US hospital

BETHESDA, Maryland (AP) — An American healthcare worker who contracted Ebola while volunteering in a Sierra Leone treatment unit arrived safely at the National Institutes of Health’s hospital in Maryland, officials announced Friday.

The patient’s condition was still being evaluated after being flown in isolation from Sierra Leone on a chartered plane and admitted at 4:44 a.m., NIH officials said in a statement. The patient’s name, age and gender were not released.

The patient is the 11th person with Ebola to be treated in the U.S. and the second admitted to the NIH Clinical Center. It has one of the few containment facilities nationwide set up to treat Ebola patients.

One of four people being monitored in Omaha for the Ebola virus has been admitted to Nebraska Medicine's biocontainment unit.
After an exposure to an Ebola patient in Sierra Leone, four American health care workers were brought to Omaha for monitoring over the weekend. Three remain in isolation somewhere on campus.

"We're concerned enough and want to make sure they're in the safest place possible," Dr. Angela Hewlett said.
