EgyptAir flight MS804: Families of crash victims to get advance compensation, airline says

Advance compensation payments of $US25,000 ($33,500) will be offered to families of the 66 people killed when an EgyptAir plane crashed into the Mediterranean last month, the airline says.

The payments are separate to those expected from insurance companies on behalf of various parties depending on the investigation into the disaster.

'bout time.

Haven't found anything about the bb's being repaired but it is only about 3 am right now in Cairo.

It's going to take a little longer to repair the bb's.

EgyptAir Flight 804: Crucial memory chips damaged

Officials are conducing electric testing on the data units and tell CNN that they will be able to confirm within a week "if the chips are readable."

Thanks, my sound isn't working too well, but what I believe I heard was the chances of not being able to recover data off of them are very low. Gonna have to turn closed captioning on so I can read what they're saying lol

What's really interesting to me is we haven't seen anything that says they're going to start to recover the plane. Did I miss it?

It's very strange surely they would need the wreckage too and what if any passengers remains are down there.

Most importantly, what their remains look like and if their bodies are intact.

On June 21st 2016 the Yulin Dog and Cat eating festival will begin in China.

Did they manage to stop Yulin today?

the only way bodies would still be "intact" would be if the plane made a predictable landing parallel to the surface of the water, basically the same way a plane would land on a runway, i don't think that is the case here, no bodies would be "intact" falling relatively straight down from that height

I wonder if we'll ever get to see those images.
Thanks everyone for your updates

I hope it's not an American company, not that I've flown since 2006. Any company employee that knowingly puts planes back in the sky with sub-par repairs should have to sit on every plane ride.

Won't be popular with who? Not sure if I mentioned that hub and I watched Why Planes Crash a few days after this plane went down, it wasn't long ago that each pilot had duties and those duties were not communicated to each other. If the pilot watching fuel was running low, he would beat around the bush saying it, he wouldn't directly tell the captain. One plane over seas crashed because of it, can't recall what country. Things changed after the crash to where now the pilots work together but back then, not so much. I'm sure more changes/ improvement are still needed.

I highly suggest everyone watch a few episodes of Why Planes Crash

It wouldn't surprise me if you're right.

We are required to undertake a CRM (Crew Resource Management) course every year. At the end of the day if you have a strong minded Captain with a somewhat narcissist personality, it makes a long day in the office. A young F/O would find it intimidating to stand up and voice his concern. This situation would be amplified depending on the nationality of the carrier. I once overheard a conversation in the Flight Deck whereby the young 21 year old F/O stood his ground. The Captain was stood down for 3 months. The Chief Pilot and myself had to escort this young lad back to the car park in fear of reprisal. This of course certainly does not happen all the time - but it is well and truly out there.

Had a chat with some of our Engineers they believe hands down forensic testing on A/C debris would reveal if there was a device on board.

Thanks for asking about Yulin Roselvr. No very sadly the festival has gone ahead but is much smaller in size. I'm very upset knowing these poor animals are being tortured and killed. The campaign just needs to keep going and eventually it will be stopped.

EgyptAir Crash Probe Held Up by Electrical Fault in Black Boxes

Salt being cleaned from 200 circuit boards to identify glitch

A team of international experts is having to clean salt accumulations from more than 200 electronic circuits to determine which one is foiling attempts to read the recorders’ memory units, Egypt’s Civil Aviation Ministry said Wednesday in an e-mailed statement.

eta, mapper's response to this.

#MS804 Will just point out that this is a little implausible. The recorders do not share circuitry.

Flight 804: Egypt fails to pull data from damaged recorders

Defeated, Egypt is now sending both the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder to the BEA in France in an effort to help download the data. The BEA -- the French version of the NTSB -- are considered some the best in the world at analyzing this type of equipment.
In a statement released on Thursday, EgyptAir said the French will "carry out repair and removal of salt accumulations."
"Then (the black boxes will be sent) back to Cairo to perform data analysis at the labs of the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

I'm glad for the victims families too I take it there must be remains still inside the wreakage. I haven't read about the authorities taking the families out to the crash site I think this needs to be done particularly when not all their loved ones will be recovered.

Thanks to all of you for your continued news updates and discussion.

"The Paris prosecutor's office will launch a manslaughter probe into EgyptAir crash which killed 66 people last month.

Today's announcement comes as the jets black box and memory chips, which could hold the secret to what downed the jet, were sent off for repair.

The prosecutor said it was not looking into terrorism as a possible cause of the crash at this stage.

Today, the prosecutor's office said: 'The Paris prosecutor has opened today a full investigation into involuntary homicide.'"

I may be wrong, but my understanding would be that the wreckage is bits and pieces of the plane strewn across the ocean floor. Not that there would be an intact fuselage down there.

The site where Flight 93 went into the ground on 9/11 is not far from me and I know several people who live right in that area. The first responders and others who worked that scene after the crash only found bits and pieces of human bodies. A thumb. A portion of a foot. Etc. They did not really find all that much because the plane went almost straight down into a hole in the ground. But there were a few items found and as I said, some pieces of bodies. I was told it was very traumatic for the responders.

By the way, if ever in the area, a visit to the Flight 93 Memorial is a worthwhile trip. It is not far at all from the Somerset, Pennsylvania Turnpike exit - about 20 minutes away.

Apparently they have brought up some of the plane, and from what they're seeing they think malfunction

On Monday debris from the jet was brought to Cairo airport, where investigators will try to reassemble part of the plane's frame in search of additional clues, a source on the investigation committee said....

....With little debris and no bodies recovered, investigators hope analysis of the black boxes will help them piece together what happened in the final half hour of the flight.

I think it all depends on a lot of factors. Water is considerable difference for a plane wrecking from altitude. Flight 93 was on land where Egypt Air flight crashed in water and its an important difference.

These pictures in the link below show Air France 447 and some of the pieces are quite large. AF crashed in water like Egypt flight. And this AF plane fell from 38,000 feet. And there is this quote in one of the pictures of the AF link below

"The find indicates that the plane did not smash to pieces when it hit the sea, as previously thought. "

So IMO I think it just depends on lots of things how much they will be able to find and how much of the debri is in tact . It would not suprise me if sections of the fuselage are found with seats attached and unfortunately people still strapped in them.

The most important thing to how much in tact debri they can find is the angle of impact and speed of impact and also the type of aircraft and manufacturer of aircraft. All of it plays a part and it will be interesting what the searchers are able to receover. For the families sake I do hope they can find and identify some people or some remains for ID.
