Elizabeth Smart updates

Not sure how this will be received, considering the polarized emotions the LDS Church seems to inspire in people, but I thought this was pretty incredible.

Elizabeth Smart will be leaving next month to serve an 18-month LDS mission in Paris, France. Regardless of what you believe about the LDS Church, you can't help but be impressed with Elizabeth Smart. Serving a mission is a difficult thing. In LDS circles, there's oftentimes pressure on young men to go. I'm always impressed with young women that go, because they do it without the social pressure lots of young men receive.

A mission is hard work; and it can be personally very stressful. Other than written communication, you have no contact with home while you're gone - in her case, it will be for eighteen months.

But I would think it's going to give her more normalcy than she's had at any point since she returned home. I would guess that most people in France wouldn't really know who she is. Still, I can't imagine how much bravery it's going to take for her to get on the plane and leave for an unfamiliar place.

I don't know Elizabeth Smart; but I know lots of her family - aunts, uncles, and cousins. They're all solid people. I'm proud of the way this girl has responded from an, to say the least, unthinkable ordeal. I can't imagine that there will be much in her life that she couldn't accomplish.

If the lovely and brave Elizabeth becomes a prosecutor, I would bet she wins every case. My best to her!

Thanks Aimee, I think that is really wonderful and am so happy for her. God love the day she was found. I remember it as it was yesterday. We posters were beside ourselves with joy.

I think her heart was big to begin with. To turn what happened to her around and greet life again with new vigor and meaning, it has to be her loving family that she leaned on. You Go Elizabeth :rocker:

Talk about coming full circle.

She is very brave and clearly compassionate.

I am a little surprised though - I always thought she cherished her privacy.

If she's ready - more power to her.

She is no longer a victim. She is a victor.

I completely agree with you, Linda. There is something very eerie about how "polished" she seems. I have read that she has had no professional therapy, which I find both odd and scary.

I do wish her success, though.

Elizabeth Smart, who was kidnapped at the age of 14 from her bedroom at knife-point and held captive for nine months, is engaged to be married.

A spokeswoman for 24-year-old Smart revealed she got engaged last week and would be getting married in the summer.

Her future husband has not been officially identified, but has been reported to be a Scotsman named Matthew Gilmour.

Wedding gift registers at Pottery Barn and Williams-Sonoma list an entry for Elizabeth Smart and Matthew Gilmour in Utah on July 1, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

I wish this girl all the happiness in the world as well. She's a strong, beautiful, smart person.

But I have a question. Someone as abused sexually as she was, at such a young age, that being her first exposure to "sex", is it possible for such a person to enjoy a normal sex life with her husband? Can a person get past that and not relive the terrible experiences of the past, when with their spouse?

I hope so. If anyone can, I guess it would be Elizabeth. I hope she can enjoy a peaceful, happy life.
