Ellen Degeneres under fire for giving away dog

WOW, some shelter horror stories out there huh?

Bottom line is these nuts did not let common sense invade their small thinking heads.

Investigate the new home, charge Ellen a fine for breaking the contract, bring the ding dong dang new adoption papers to the family and let the dog stay where it was placed by Ellen. Sometimes you break the rules based on the need at the time - the best decision for ALL, even the doggy.

Two words for the shelter lady, POWER TRIP.

Now, I heard a guy on our local talk radio with a similar pet adoption story about how many times they came to the home to check on the pet, called, did a background check etc. THEN HE HAD TO BECOME GUARDIAN TO A LITTLE 3 YEAR OLD GIRL AND THEY NEVER EVEN DID A BACKGROUND CHECK ON HIM.

This guy was AMAZED at how much more anal the shelter people where than the CPS system.

We've lost it when we start elevating pets over children on the scale of importance in this country. It is no wonder there is so much child abuse and events of discarded babies. I honestly think people love their animals more and it's sad.

Mutts and Moms had an attitude to begin with, but their attorney is making it worse. I read, I think in the L.A. Times, he said paraphrasing here, "Ellen is off sipping cognac on her yacht while these two women are being destroyed." I'm sorry but Ellen doesn't strike me as the yacht and cognac sipping type of gal. Does she even own a yacht? And I listened again to the tape of Ellen's PR person. I feel she was just stating the facts and giving Mutts and Moms the opportunity to do the right thing before further action was taken. And who knows, that could have been the 20th attempt to contact them and they weren't returning calls. I was in a business for over 20 years and can tell you eventually you have to pull out the threat of legal action to get people to call you back.

Someone posted earlier about the fact that TMZ just happened to be there. The tabloids have police scanners and spies everywhere.

I really hate seeing reputable rescues get a black eye over this. And I bet Ellen does to, because she is a big supporter of animal groups.

What ever happened to "stiff upper lip"? I like Ellen, but I think she went way over board with this story.I know she loves animals, and I could understand her getting a bit teary eyed, while telling it.But sobbing the way she did on her show, and having to cancel one day of taping her show, because she was so upset,in my opinion is over the top. Geeeez.

I agree that Ellen went way over the top. However, one must remember that Ellen is also an actress in addition to being a comedian. When you see the tape replayed, she goes from talking about the incident to putting her head down and then up and then crying uncontrollably. It seemed staged.

I'll have to remember the next time I'm crying not to put my head up and down. Someone might think I'm staging it.

I also wasn't aware that when you become a public person you give your rights to opinions, feelings and the due process of court away.

sorry,, but the dumb control-freak idiot destroyed HERSELF.

She could well just be an emotional type. She had the dog for a little while, no doubt she's a little attached to it. Then she's able to see it go to a nice new home, make a few children happy - and then they're made miserable by these idiots. I get pretty attached to my animals too.

I do wonder - why don't some of these shelter Nazi's work in CPS or adoption facilities? Seems their overzealousness would be nearly appropriate there.

Ellen's tears were probably for the hairdresser's family and what they were put through in this tug-of-war. Ellen comes across as a genuinely nice and compassionate person. I'd never think her tears were contrived for sympathy.

I hope she can get Iggy back to the family. It sounded perfect, lots of attention from two children plus the company of another young dog.
I can't believe the woman from the shelter put her own feelings of anger before that little dogs welfare.

Yes...I think you are right. I think it was about the pain that the family and their children are going through. Ellen is an animal lover...and so am I. Most animal lovers feel like their pets are part of the family.

I would never get an animal from people like this. Calling all the time, "Is the dog alright?" Showing up, "Is the dog doing well?" They should call it "borrowing" because to me adoption means, "It's mine."

Yes, most (and I do say most from my own experience) rescuers are extremely anal. Last year, we wanted to adopt a cat from this one rescue lady. I had to sit and go through this process of how many kids I have, pets, what kind of pets, my income, etc. All for a cat??? The lady got hpyersensitive after I mentioned that one of my dogs got loose and was hit by a car. She denied me for that reason thinking the same would happen to the cat we wanted.

Needless to say, this woman had something like 30 cats waiting to be rescued. It's all they do. In my opinion, most of them are a little nutty. By the way, we went to another rescue group from a lady that took pets from the pound on thier last day and got a cute turkish angora. Now we have 2 cats, 4 dogs, and a ferret. Oh, and fish cause I put in a garden pond a few weeks ago.

I'd build the ark, but in this drought???

Because many of the people who work for dog rescues actually hate kids.

I worked for our local shelter for 10 months and we did place many dogs with rescues so they would not have to be euthanized. The "contract" that we have folks sign is basically the same out of the book contract the rescues use. Many of you mentioned how this rescue was overstepping its rights by removing the dog and I tend to agree, but had this dog actually turned out to be the dog from hell, that nifty contract releases the shelter or rescue from any lawsuits. That is it's first and primary duty. Ellen adopted a dog, hey thats great and she found it a loving home, also great. The dog attacks one of the kids and it suddenly becomes a legal battle and who ends up being held accountable? The shelter or the rescue for not following thru on procedure or Ellen, for not following her contract? It's a double edge sword, no matter how you slice it and the rescue was just legally covering their butts.

That sounds reasonable. I suppose I'm in the minority here, but I side with the agency. In fact, I think Ellen was totally out of line and vindictive when she trumped up a sob fest on TV for her adoring, nationwide audience.

i didn't think much about all this really, one way or the other, to be honest, but i'm really leaning toward the above now.....all of it seems a bit much, imo

I don't know if it has been mentioned, but did anyone see the actress on Inside Edition last night? She said that she gave Ellen a dog a few years ago and Ellen did the same thing with her dog. Ellen kept it for a few days and gave it to someone else.

I personally think that Ellen was over the top with her sob routine. It was a bit much and should have been handled privately. If Ellen signed a contract, she should have abided by the stipulations. Perhaps, had she worked with the agency, they would have agreed to let the hairdresser's family have the dog.

IMO, Ellen is the one in the wrong here.

I don't know whether or not your post was meant to be serious or tongue-in-cheek, but my stepmom is a big animal-lover and she does hate kids. She used to flat-out admit it when I was a teenager but she wouldn't dare now that I have kids of my own. But she would totally take her pets over me, my dad, or my kids. It's weird, IMO.
