Emmys will edit Kathy Griffin’s offensive speech

  • #161
the respect i ask for and i show to others does not require people to sit around with heads bowed for life. i try not to say things that are offensive to other people. i do not ask that she not mention Jesus in her speech. when she said god had nothing to do with her award i was not impressed nor offended. suck it Jesus is another story. you know we disagree on some religious issues but i spoke to you with respect despite the fact we dont agree. you did not insult me just because my beliefs are different from yours. we spoke and showed each other respect for our beliefs. it is not written anywhere because it is not a law. it is common decency.

I basically agree with you here, sherri. I think she could have stopped with "God had nothing to do with it" and her point would have been better made in the long run. Personally, I'm delighted to the extent that somebody finally satirized excessive Jesus displays at winner's podium; it was long overdue.

But like most comedians who push at boundaries, she kept going. Now she can look at the reaction and decide where to draw the line in the future.

(For what it's worth, Griffin has long said she had no chance of winning against Home Makeover because of the latter's sentimental appeal. She may very well have been shocked to win. That doesn't excuse her remarks, but it may have contributed to her going farther than was productive.)

there will always be people who do the wrong thing. evil people, bad people, lazy people, rude people. the fact that people do the wrong thing to different degrees and all ways will does not mean people should not speak out when they see it. when you see a person do something wrong and you dont speak up you condone what they have said. i have lived that in my own life. i have kicked my own father out of my house for using the n word. had i done nothing my kids would have thought it was ok. that would have been my fault because by allowing it i might as well have said it was fine to use the word. i have no power on kathy but i can vent here and express why i feel it was so wrong.

There is no objective right and wrong in this instance.

If she had made a racist remark, she would lose work over it and the various organizations would make sure she was censored going forward.

I think its "bad taste, poor judgement", to belittle anything.

I think she made herself look bad, period. Freedom of Speech is a given, however, abusing the right to Freedom of Speech is another!

I don't see what the big deal is. I think people are too sensitive to words. She didn't actually "DO" anything to hurt anyone. She didn't attack "religion" she made a stupid joke. What happened to freedom of speech? You don't like what she had to say or her comedy than by all means ignore it. You don't have to feel the same way about religion. Or spaghetti sauce or cars of anything for that matter. It shouldn't matter. It's what you choose to do with your life that means something.

For those of us who watch her show constantly, you do realize that she would get a HUGE kick out of this entire conversation. Someone should send her a link. Maybe we could get her to join our little group.

That would be cool.
I watch her show. I don't like everything she says but I don't get personally offended by her.

Yes, please link Kathy Griffin so I can tell her she sucks personally even though I'm defending her for some odd reason. :D

She'll get a kick out of that.

I don't understand that at all, but that being the case I think this was simply not the proper place and time for the display.

You are so right. But you'll have to do something to lure her away from Survivor Sucks, where she occasionally posts. That's really her crowd (and BTW, the only other forum I read).

Are you kidding? It's the PERFECT place and time, even if we agree she could have been more artful in her ridicule. Come on. These award shows are over-produced, high school popularity contests that are presented as if they actually have something to do with art and craft. They cry out to be mocked.

Rino, haven't you ever noticed at every award show whether it be the Oscars, Grammys or ESPYS that so many people get up there and thank God, as if God is up there channeling all his energy to help them specifically win that award? Granted, I am certain there are people who are truly spiritual, church attending citizens who feel that their strong faith truly helped them persevere as artists. However, I am also just as certain that many others simply say it when they don't have a religious bone in their body. I'm just not buying it - look at Michael Vick who all of a sudden found Jesus when he was forced to face the consequences of his actions. Do you think he TRULY found Jesus or do you think he was just saying it because it would endear him to a certain group of people?

God only knows, but if I were Vick, I'd be scared.

I agree with you. But they do not intend to offend (bible thumpers annoy me to no end) This is an award show and her intention to offend people I think is better placed in her act.

The reason is it censored I imagine is because those who don't like her, don't know of her at all or are the young audiance who -as in my daughters case -are not allowed to watch her are not blind sided by her antics.

BTW, we are going to her show in AC next month - still :D

Steven Wright (love him) is/was pretty good at making it not about other people, but I think that would be tough to do. I think it would be hard to do comedy that doesn't offend someone. That said, some people are better at offending the masses than others!

Steven Wright: http://youtube.com/watch?v=KnxB6fEyHAk&mode=related&search=

I'm obviously catching up here, but LOVE love LOVE Steven Wright. You're right, he's good at laughing at himself (or stupid things humans do in general). Thanks for the youtube video. He's a hard guy to track down on the internet!
