Experts ‘amazed’ at survival of Valerie the miniature dachshund – on the run on South Australian island for more than a year

Yes they said the food was attracting a lot of wildlife, and that was one of the problems.
I think maybe one of the worries is that she might end up trapped with some wildlife who might panic and turn on her.
Even possums can be quite fierce.

So they need to catch her when she's in the cage alone, and up the far end to give them enough time so she can't make a run for it.

Rescuers on Kangaroo Island say they are ‘overjoyed’ after the dog walked into one of their traps

“Kangala Wildlife Rescue is overjoyed to announce the successful rescue of Valerie,” the group said on TikTok on Friday night.

“After weeks of tireless efforts … by volunteers and partner organisations Valerie has been safely rescued and is fit and well.

“We are absolutely thrilled and deeply relieved that Valerie is finally safe and able to begin her transition back to her loving parents.”

Owner Georgia Gardner expressed her relief on social media.

"For anyone who’s ever lost a pet, your feelings are valid and never give up hope," she said in a post.

"Sometimes good things happen to good people.

"Incredibly grateful for Kangala Wildlife Rescue, the Kangaroo Island community, our friends, family and everyone who has contributed their support to rescue Val.

"We’ll see you soon Valerie."

I'm dying for an update.
I presume she's been checked out by a vet.

I hope she has no problems settling down to being a kept and loved little lady.
And I hope she doesn't miss her wild and free old life.
Me, too! I worry that she is now considered feral, having had to learn to survive independently, and rely on her instincts to hunt and scavenge. Will she remember her humans and still have the same affection for them? I hope it works out!

Very informative update.

How Valerie was finally caught

Once Valerie was comfortable coming in and out of the trap, it was just a matter of waiting for her to return and be in the right position, Jared said. “We finally got that opportunity.”

The tiny 4kg dog came in and rummaged around for hidden food stashes, eventually ending up in the back corner of the cage.

At that moment, Jared pressed the button and remotely dropped the door. “Thankfully it all worked perfectly.”

He said Valerie handled her capture well, she “took it in her stride”. And, after initially running around, trying to find ways out, she went into her crate and took a nap.

“She just curled up and went to sleep.”

The two mini dachshunds I have are now 15, but in their younger years I am sure they would've loved running free. They bolted out the front door on multiple occasions and were difficult to catch. I am not sure they would've been happy returning home and being kept as a pet after living on their own like that...until they got older! ;-)
