Experts ‘amazed’ at survival of Valerie the miniature dachshund – on the run on South Australian island for more than a year

The two mini dachshunds I have are now 15, but in their younger years I am sure they would've loved running free. They bolted out the front door on multiple occasions and were difficult to catch. I am not sure they would've been happy returning home and being kept as a pet after living on their own like that...until they got older! ;-)
Ours is 5 years old and suffers so badly from separation anxiety he wouldn’t last 24 hours imo.
Well done Valerie agree so hoping to hear an update following the reunion

I moved in for a couple of weeks to help my aunt when she broke her hip. She had an 8 month old miniature dachshund, Pippa.

Absolutely adorable puppy but every now and then I would see a glint in her eyes, naughtiness would take over...she would jump up and tear leaves from big house plants, try to play and mess around with cables under a desk, take anything she could from a bedroom, particularly socks, paper and tissues.

There was a huge garden with lots of doggie toys, all fenced, but she managed to find a gap and dig and wriggle through. Got her back with treats and blocked the gap.

Solution was to take her to the woods nearby, on long leash, 4 times a day, where she could chase and bark at squirrels and big dogs and dig holes to her heart's delight and come back exhausted.

Pip is now almost two, has had some obedience training, you still need to pick her up when you answer the door and to stop her habit of peeing on the guest's shoe. Its her special greeting!

Caring for my aunt actually was a doddle...

"Georgia kindly was able to wear this T-shirt for 12-hour shifts and games of netball and sent it down to us and that was amazing — so we were able to rip little strips off of it and we started the process of just adding more and more bits to the trap site," Ms Karran said.

Ms Karran said once Valerie was caught, she wore the remnants of Georgia's T-shirt when she approached the dog and sat with her until she was "completely calm and snuggled up in our laps".

The team will now spend some more time with Valerie while she is "decompressing" to help her become re-accustomed to life with her humans.

Jared Karran said Valerie's owners would be collecting her in the coming week or so.

"We're looking forward to handing their little miss over to them," he said.

"She's doing really, really well ... the whole team is just thrilled to be able to spend a little bit of time with her."

In the short ABC video, there is video of a cat licking a very contented or placid Valerie.
It's at the 48 second mark.

This must be from home, and I'm sure that cat must have missed it's friend very much.

We’ve got a mini doxie- terrier mix and none of this surprises me in the least - surviving such a dangerous adventure, all those miles traveled, the wagging tail after months of being on her own, the wink ;) etc. She’s got the heart of a lion no doubt.
