ETA: They have a patent pending on this pattern and I can see how it's a great design for that specific material they call for. The seams are outward and would ravel if cotton. If you have a serger, I guess you could finish cotton seams that way. I think when washed they would still have little threads raveling.

I found a similar pattern that looks a bit easier, but then you end up guessing about fit... I've already found one that I think will be easier to hand sew, will post if anyone is interested.... don't want to bombard everyone.

Posters above indicated that they had to wait in line at Joanne's Fabrics when dropping off masks and getting supplies.

Is there a good time to get there so I don't have to wait in line so long? Also, I won't be picking up supplies, so can I walk up and give my finished masks to a Joanne's employee?

Any advice would be appreciated.

My friend that is making masks orders online, then selects store pickup. When she arrives, she parks and the JoAnn Fabric employee brings her purchase to her. I think you have to tell them what type vehicle you're in so they can find you.

She makes the ties on the machine just like I do. A triple fold and stitch, knot the ends. It looks like it fits pretty good but you could add a channel for a nose wire if you wanted.

Me too. I have tried the no sewing versions but haven't been happy with them. I don't have a sewing machine but can do simple hand sewing.

ETA: oh boy, this doesn't look like I could do it quickly!

Thats awesome! I’m cutting the double fold bias tape in half so I get twice as much. I will have to try this to see if its faster than my triple roll & stitch.

Hey, not the OP, but...
I don’t know what type of wire others are using, but I’m using the green plastic coated garden wire - a gazillion yards for a buck from the dollar store.

So I thought that I would save time and do something in between the simple pleated and the Olson mask - a pleated with a pocket, nose-wire, and ability to adjust the elastic.

I am so glad this was not the first pattern I ever tried because if it had been, I doubt I would have continued. You would think it would be easier and faster than the Olson mask (and apparently it is for my mom), but not for me. I bumbled 3 of them today and that was my total haul, while in the previous 24 hours I produced 28 pleated masks. And the 3 I produced are an embarrassment that will likely end up in the trash.

The good news, though, is that my mother couldn’t get her serger to work so she set it out for me to pick up. It’s so fast, it’s a lot of fun once you get it working. So I’m going to babysit the thing for awhile. The truth is that if I can’t go into her apartment to show her, she can’t use it anyway. This is one of the things that sucks - not being able to drop in and fix things for her. At some point, though, if something really crucial needs fixing, I will just have to mask up and go in.

At the convent of San Leandro in Sevilla, nuns have exchanged making their famous sweets for sewing much-needed masks, and when they need some time to get away and stretch their legs, they pick up a rock and shoot some hoops!

Up to 18 months???

3 of my ancestors passed in 1920 of the "1918" flu... We have 2 more winters. Hopefully soon we will have a vaccine and decent treatment options.
