@JaneEyre

I see now that you provided incredibly good instructions. Unfortunately, if I made one, it would turn out badly.

But this has really really helped me understand masks better. We have N95 respirator masks (non-medical) because we needed them during the big fires here in SoCal, but...it is so uncomfortable.

I am willing to wear a face shield in the classroom (if I ever go back) combined with a mask, but I pretty much am going to have to use cloth. The addition of the various filters you mention make all the difference in effectiveness.

You are AH-MAZING.

Thank you so much. Truthfully, this is all pretty bewildering and you are the only person I can find anywhere on the internet who knows so much. I knew there was way more to think about.

Is that you on shopify?? (I don't mean the model in the mask - although that would be interesting - I mean - are you selling on shopify?)
No, I haven’t been selling. But I have seen masks with the chin cup for sale. I’m working off a slightly different pattern. My brother and I believe it’s the extra chin piece that allows us to talk while working without it slipping down.

They aren’t my instructions. I’m not that talented. I followed the instructions on a similar pattern, though, and have been able to recently make professional quality masks. This is super important to me because two of my siblings are working daily - one with the public, and the other in a factory. Both are essential workers, as is my nephew.

@anneg @10ofRods

One brand I know is built with the chin piece, nose wire, and filter pocket is “Debrief Me” I bought one in January, which is why I knew there was a way to get a better fit than I was getting with other patterns.

I see other good ones advertised on Facebook a lot. The next time I get a link to decent ones, I will post for you.

This pattern has the chin piece and has been tested. Here are the filtering results

When we made the masks out of the following materials they filtered out 87% of particles based on the Portacount fit test:
+ One layer of oil absorbent towel + one layer of shop towel (Zep, Wypall or Toolbox brands)
+ Two layers of shop towel (Zep, Wypall, or Toolbox brands

When we made the mask out of t ight woven cotton and added the o ptional pocket piece, filling it with any of the following filters, the mask filtered out 82% of particles based on the Portacount fit test:
-W ypall X80 Towel
-Z epShopTowel
-T oolboxShopTowel

When we made the mask out of t ight woven cotton and added the o ptional pocket piece, filling it with the following filter, the mask filtered out 70% of particles based on the Portacount fit test: -S cottShopTowel

When we made the mask out of t ight woven cotton and added the o ptional insert piece and filleditwithn ofilters,themaskfilteredout52%ofparticlesbasedonthePortacountfittest.

I got the link from this article. Here are the instructions for a better-fitting homemade mask that can filter particles 2x better than cotton, created by three clothing designers

@JaneEyre : Thank you so much for this pattern! I've just printed it.

I’d love to see a photo of your finished product. If I had a printer, I would give this a shot and compare it to the other one I’m doing. I think they are basically the same.

I've perused this mask and the steps to make it. I was hoping I wouldn't have to make ties.

What I'd like to do is fold the sides over, stitch them and insert elastic, like the Olson mask.

ETA: Adding 1/2 inch to each side and folding it over might work. Also, I'd like to sew it, with wrong sides together, then turn it right side out.

I'll let you know.

I end up adding a bit at the sides to most of these patterns just to make it easier to slip the elastic in. I want the elastic to be replaceable. Looking forward to seeing yours.

Sewing machines hard to find right now

Has anyone else noticed that getting a sewing machine is almost impossible lately? Amazon is sold out, Home Depot, Sears, Joanns, local sewing stores. Apparently mask making has become a new hobby/obsession.

How do I know this? My daughter wanted to start sewing her own masks, this has become quite the fashion trend for teens, college students. So, she wanted a sewing machine. Okay, no problem, Amazon...uh, nope. I checked around...gone. And, no, I wasn't going to spend $1600. There are some available at that price range.

I did find one for her. Luckily.

Yes!

My machine lost its timing one day. The needle kept hitting a hard part of the bobbin case (I think that's what it is called), and I thought I'd have to order new parts. I also looked at new machines, just in case.

Not only are sewing machines sold out, but the parts are as well.

Thankfully, DH was able to fix the timing.

I ordered some bobbins and other parts from Sewing Parts Online on April 23. I still haven't received them.

I am super lucky that we live in Montana, where almost everyone has a sewing machine. I was lucky enough to find one, only had to drive 100 miles to get it.

On sale, and 20% coupon. Very pleased. Janome C30. Seems like a nice beginner machine.

@CSIDreamer I just read about your ears being sore. Try ear savers like these button ones. You put them where this nurse used a paper clip instead.

Okay, this is my first attempt with the SUAY mask pattern, and I'm not happy with it.

Even though I had DH add an extra .5 inch to both sides, it turned out really small for an adult. It will probably fit a child well.

Here are some photos:

SUAY_Mask_Chin_Piece.jpg SUAY_Mask_Top.jpg SUAY_Mask_Back.jpg

The first photo shows the chin piece, which didn't come under my chin very far.

The second photo is the mask front.

The last photo is the back of the mask, complete with filter pocket and nose-wire sleeve (which is on the right-hand side of the photo.)

I've been adding wire sleeves with all of my masks. That's the long strip at the bottom of the mask in the last photo, which is upside down.

I'll make the strips for the top and bottom, and then pass it on to Joanns.
Shoot. I’m getting errors when I click on your attachments.

Can you link me to your pattern? I’m wondering if it didn’t include a seam allowance. I’ve noticed the Asian patterns do not, while we Americans are used to them being factored in as they are with the Olson mask pattern. I’ve messed a few up when I was tired and going on auto-pilot, forgetting to add the seam allowance when I cut. I keep meaning to just re-cut all those patterns with the seam allowance.

Apologies. The first set of photos were all upside-down, and I deleted them and resized them. You should be able to see the new set of photos.

Regarding the Asian sizes, I think you are spot on with your sizing comment. I've purchased Asian clothing, and I usually go one size up when I buy.

The pattern I used is the one from your link above; I'll enclose it again so we are all on the same page.

Here you go: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0...-f82b-4899-b9bd-720e664b0316.pdf?v=1586816593

This mask is pretty cool, and I think I can get it to fit with a few tweaks. I really like the chin piece.
