That sounds interesting. I'd like to see a photo so I understand how it works.

My nose wire keeps my glasses from fogging up. But not all nose wires are created equal. I need to order some more high quality ones soon.

Masks for kids? Schools confront the politics of reopening | Xfinity

On one side are parents saying, let kids be kids. They object to masks and social distancing in classrooms this fall — arguing both could hurt their children’s well-being — and want schools to reopen full time.

On the other side are parents and teachers who call for safeguards that would have been unimaginable before the coronavirus pandemic: part-time school, face coverings for all or a fully online curriculum.

The impassioned tug-of-wars have put educators in the middle of an increasingly politicized debate on how best to reopen schools this fall, a daunting challenge as infections spike in the U.S. ...

Fabric makers are printing up panels for face masks now. A quilt shop in the area is building it as a kit with backing and elastic. This has 18 masks prints and instructions. I think they do online ordering now too.

These are some of my favorite personal masks. I started working on some fall colors, too.

I've got a project to make 8 children's masks like these for a friend before they start school.

DIA, other Detroit outfits offer artistic flair in masks

The coronavirus pandemic prompted the sales of plain-color masks, but face coverings being sold in the Detroit area are increasingly taking on an artistic flair that caters to creative individuals and the fine arts crowd.

The Detroit Institute of Arts rolled out an initial line of fine arts masks in May, sold 500 masks in the first 45 minutes and sold out the supply of 5,200 masks in four days, said Erick Huck, the DIA's director of retail operations.

It has taken two months for the museum to replenish the stock and sales were restarted Wednesday online and Thursday in the museum's gift store...

What we all knew already.

Homemade coronavirus face masks should be two or three layers to stop spread of virus, study finds

“Based on the visualizations presented, in case of shortages of surgical masks, a cloth face covering with at least two layers is preferable to a single-layer one. Guidelines on homemade cloth masks should stipulate multiple layers (at least three)," the researchers stated.

The study concluded that wearing a face mask overall is helpful in stopping the spread of the coronavirus.

I have some KN-95s. They are much easier to breathe in than my masks, which makes me wonder which one offers me the most protection. I know what I have layered I the ones I make and they do create a pretty good seal. I don’t, however, know for sure how good my kn-95s are. So I don't know which I should be wearing to work.

A patron came in last week without a mask. I didn't want her to have to ride her bike home to get one so I gave her an extra cloth mask I had in the car (I keep a stash of unused ones in my car). She asked if I wanted her to wash it up and bring it back. I said no. She was wearing it today when she came in. I'm glad to see them get used.

Opinion | I got AIDS because I didn't use protection. People refusing to wear masks are no different.

I see people who are making the same error I made 34 years ago when I ignored all the warnings, all the news and all the numbers.

In 1985, New York Gov. Mario Cuomo urged the public to have safe sex by using condoms to help stop the spread of AIDS. Condoms were the face masks of the 1980s.

Some people wanted to use them during sex, some did not; many who chose the latter, including myself, suffered the consequences. In 1986, I decided to ignore Cuomo and every medical expert — and became infected with HIV.

Today we are once again in the middle of a war being waged between these two camps, personal freedom and staying alive. Too many people still don’t seem to accept that if they are fighting for the right to not wear a mask, it will very likely come at the price of their life or that of someone they love. The power of free choice can kill you...

No metal. No cutting or sewing. How to make a ninja mask out of a t-shirt.

I think I would rather stay in than go out in this one. Unless I used a really pretty patterned T-shirt. He looks like a bank robber rather than a Ninja IMO.

How to make a face mask from a sock. Guaranteed metal-free.

Step by Step Guide to Making a Sock Face Mask
I really hope people will buy or find proper masks. A knit sock is not going to protect anyone. It will only put them in compliance.
The ‘sock’ mask is suggested by the AARP. There is an easy to follow video of how to ‘construct’ the mask using a tightly knitted sock plus at least one layer of tightly woven fabric inside. One thing I would change is the recommendation of folding the inside fabric into a small square. Instead it should also cover the area of the mask firmly and securely. MOO

If you read the comments underneath the article you’ll see that many people believed this mask would be ineffective. Since the heel of a sock wears first a used sock might be too thin to be of value. Buying new socks could be as expensive as buying a well-constructed mask.

Each person should evaluate the AARP’s suggestions to determine if they have value for them. I posted this mask to the main thread as a no-sew option that didn’t include metal. It was moved by a moderator to the mask thread.

A couple of questions about cleaning/washing your masks. How often do you wash your cloth mask? Do you wash by hand or in the washer? If you use procedural masks, do you reuse them or use a new one each time you need to wear a mask?

Prior to receiving complementary cloth masks from BCBS, DH and I were reusing the CVS procedural masks that I had purchased some years ago to wear when flying (allergy/asthma physician recommended for my asthma). We still have quite a few left, but are mostly using the cloth masks now. When we wear the CVS masks, we wipe them down on both sides with Clorox wipes and let them air dry. I've been washing our cloth masks by hand with Ivory liquid and allow them to dry overnight. We usually wear them 2 or 3 times before cleaning them.

I've noticed masks hanging on the rear view mirrors in vehicles and wonder if these masks are ever cleaned or washed. I understand keeping a mask handy, but I suspect that many folks don't bother to keep their mask clean. DH and I both have a couple of the CVS masks in our car in case we forget to take one when we leave the house. I've been keeping my BCBS mask in my purse so I always have it with me.

Just use one of those socks that you dislike and have never worn, I guess.

Our cloth masks go in the washer. Then I iron them a bit which speeds the drying. Otherwise they look like you slept in them. I live in SWFL where the heat can kill a human in a closed up vehicle. So my masks don’t get washed every time. I lay them on the console for the germs to die. I have 2 surgical masks and 2 cloth masks in my vehicle.

I probably wash the cloth ones weekly. I don’t leave home much tho. The surgical masks I rarely wear and are disposable. I haven’t even opened the pack of paper masks the cancer group sent. They were made in China and I was never able to verify if they were legit.

Personally, I put mine in the washer after every use. I don’t trust hand washing them because if I don't get it rinsed well enough, I will have serious skin issues, as I wear them 6 hours a day. But I wash them even if I've only worn it in a store, too.

I do have 7 lunch bags in the foyer, one for every day of the week, where I quarantine my filters.

I wash the cloth ones in the washer, just take it off & drop in the washer, wash with whatever arrives next.

I touch-up iron woven fabric as needed, not the tee-shirt fabric ones, so far.

We do have some N-95s and other masks Mr. Laughing has for woodworking finishes & other garage chemicals. Those I clothespin to a metal hanger & leave in direct sunlight, turn to put both sides in the sun. We do not use these much, you know they are pricey.

Mr. Laughing is a retired science teacher. We've read about research using a UV light cabinet designed to sanitize lab googles to sanitize masks. This was successful, so if you have access to a UV cabinet, that's a good method. (He always had access to a high-end water distillation machine, too, wonderful for steam irons....)

I have put the rectangular disposable masks on the car dashboard. If the item is too hot to hold, that's a good sign!

I do keep a spare fabric mask or two in my purse in a baggie, hate to use the plastic but....

Best, Laughing
