I respect your opinion. This is kind of how I look at it. Technology will continue to advance. If at some point, technology would ever advance, although highly unlikely, to the point where a person who suffers heart failure and some kind of artificial machine can be attached to continue the circulation of blood, would society want to keep there loved ones at home or in a facility, being somewhat preserved for an indefinite or endless amount of time? Would the deceased want that?

This is just delaying the decay and breakdown of other organs. IMO

If we could embalm or taxidermy someone and they would never decay, would some want to take them home and sit them in a corner chair? I really do think a lot of people would want to do this and I'm not joking.

Haven't they? Well not taxidermy, but corpses have remained in the homes of their beloved for years after their death and they have been found mummified.
I remember a story about a man and two female relatives. I think he was "off", but he kept cashing their soc sec checks...

As the little boy in the state farm "mime" commercial says it...

I found this interesting.

A BRAIN-DEAD BODY CAN STILL FUNCTION
Many doctors consider this an appropriate definition and say that misdiagnoses are rare. Others have a problem with the very concept and say that brain death is not enough. They point to the fact that a brain-dead pregnant mother can continue to gestate and give birth, and the body can eliminate cell waste, heal wounds, and fight infections.[8]

See that's why I can't refer to her as a corpse. To me, a corpse can not continue to gestate and give birth, eliminate cell waste, heal wounds, or fight infections.

JMO

I agree. A corpse does no have a beating heart, regardless of the ventilator. Calling Jahi a corpse or dead body shows disrespect.

I also think the fact that her mother and grandmother were there when she started massive bleeding and the PICU jumped into Code Blue mode make this all the more stunning and dramatic. I don't want to denigrate anyone's grief, but the shock of seeing her bleeding and the collapse starts this surreal journey. Then, an attorney shows up and takes over.

Would it have been any easier if she had had a drowning or a stroke or a gunshot, or something that didn't happen in front of their eyes? I don't know.

I find it unconscionable for an attorney to contract services with this totally traumatized and vulnerable mother right now. Didn't HE contact her first? Isn't that an ethical breach?

At least this will clear up the death certificate controversy.

http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_24840744/jahi-mcmath-mom-can-remove-brain-dead-daughter

"Elsewhere Friday, an Alameda County coroner's office investigator said Jahi's death certificate has been issued and that it listed her name and date of death as Dec. 12, the day she was declared brain dead after her sleep apnea surgery ended with complications, but listed no cause of death pending an autopsy. Officials have not yet made that certificate public."

Apologies if already posted. Just got in and read this.

Good. This can't continue indefinitely.

My point is, not everybody feels that way.
There are doctors who disagree. There are clergy who disagree. There are parents who disagree.
Her mother obviously thinks she's alive. Can you imagine the torment of truly believing (due to religion or any other reason) that your child is not dead and may recover and people are telling you she's DEAD. DEAD. DEAD. and they want to pull the plug whether you agree or not.
That is heart wrenching to me.

I believe in her right to fight like hell as long as she sees fit to do what she thinks is right for her child.
Because she's her child.

Not related to your post but:
I don't think bashing this family, making jokes about this family, or nitpicking their every move serves any purpose what so ever.

Perhaps the doctor said she was DEAD DEAD DEAD because mom is in denial and believes her child is alive. Some people view honesty as harsh, rude and unnecessary while others find it refreshing and needed. I personally would not be comfortable with my or my daughters physicians giving me false hope or sugar coating the truth. Lay it all out, I'll get my cuddles and support from friends and family. But, that's just me.

It's so interesting how widely opinions vary on this.

ETA: I want to stress that this is just MY opinion and I can certainly understand how others would view a less than sensitive bedside manner as cruel. This is just me pointing out how differently people can view a singular situation.

They must mean business in that courtroom. It's 5 on a Friday. That's like...at least half an hour past quitting time in most courts!

Morgan and Morgan (attorneys in FL) commercials says it is. They advertise to call the bar and report it.

What are they discussing in there? I thought it was settle that mother can take Jahi out of the hospital?

What are they discussing in the fed court for so long if they already came into an agreement in the state court? Are they going to turn it upside down or what?

Isn't the federal court complaint regarding violating civil rights?

With everything that has happened, I honestly can't remember.

I agree. But I would never think it my right to tell her she had to.

JMO

I respect your opinion. In fact, it was my opinion two days ago. While a mother should have the final say on her child's life, do you feel at this point that it's fair that hospital rules should be broken, laws ignored, welfare of other patients threatened all for one mother's denial?

I am one of the lucky mothers. My son died on a highway as he was removed from his crumpled vehicle. The autopsy indicated brain bleeding. Had he survived long enough to be in ICU on a ventilator to later be declared brain dead I honestly cannot say how I would act/react. My luck was in never having to make "that"decision.

So he says.

It was the night of Dec. 16 at about 10. I had just finished a trial in a civil-rights case in federal court. I had been up all night the night before preparing my closing argument. I was tired and told my wife I needed a break. Then I got a text.

A friend from Los Angeles said there was a man in the Bay Area claiming his niece was on life support and the hospital was going to pull the plug the next morning. Could I give him a call? The account seemed unbelievable, but I made the call. That's when I met Omari, Jahi's uncle.

CHO 's ICU is a 23 bed unit and CHO is the largest Level 1 Trauma Center for pediatrics, according to their website. They offer so many services across the board for kids, which was remarkable. Having worked at primarily adult oriented hospitals, I was very impressed at how they covered the full spectrum of care for children. CHO offers NIH protocols for treating childhood cancers which must be reassuring for parents.

With all this negativity, I thought I would post something positive about CHO. Sorry for being OT.

RSBM: California law dictates death determination is made by medical professionals. Please provide the transcript of the conversation where Dr Durand uses that exact wording. That is heresay at the moment.
