New York facility says it wants to care for Jahi McMath

A New York facility says it's ready to care for Jahi McMath, the 13-year-old girl on a ventilator who was declared brain dead by doctors in California after tonsil surgery.
"At this time we're named as the potential facility that Jahi and her family will be coming to, but we will know more details in a couple of hours, and we'll certainly be happy to let you know as we know," said Allyson Scerri, founder of the New Beginnings Community Center in Medford, New York.

ETA According to her online biography posted on the facility's website, Scerri worked as a hair stylist for 25 years and founded the facility after her father sustained a traumatic brain injury in a motorcycle accident.

Guess she'll learn the difference between a TBI and brain death pretty quickly.

I didn't even grasp the snark but if the family is seeking retribution (monetary) for care after she (her body) receives AFTER she's released, I just don't seeing it happening - so hope this case goes to court actually

Dr Harch is a legitimate Dr at LSU. But is a proponent of the Hyperbaric system which does have many uses but not with TBI.

I'd like to add my 2 cents to one thing the mom said. She said her daughter was an asset to her family. I'm from the south and we say someone is an asset to our family and it has nothing to do with money. It has to do with the love, joy, and happiness said person gives us. thanks......back to reading.

I see that Dolan has finally stopped stating that insurance will pay- and using Karmady's advice, paying attention to what Dolan does not say- I believe the insurance he has referred to is CHO & Does 1-10's malpractice insurance.

I used to live next to Oakland in Emeryville and then in San Francisco, I now live in the North Bay and support CHO totally and have heard nothing but good things about them.

The family holds the hospital responsible for post operative complications that resulted in the death. I'm sure that they expect the hospital to keep her body warm and to foot the bill.

My feelings are also contrary to popular opinion here. It really bothers me how the hospital has responded. Perhaps if they had been a little more empathetic and not constantly referred to Jahi as "the body", "the deceased", or the worst "the corpse" the family may have been able to come to terms with all of this much sooner. The hospital's attitude and callousness put this family on the defense. They may now feel that they can't back down at this point.

Who knows, maybe the family is lying; but, CHO has done themselves no favors by their public responses.

But for all intents & purposes & within the LAW Jahi is dead/deceased

CHO is telling the truth!

The family should have gripped this on 12 Dec 2013 IMHO

I have had surgery many times (granted, I am not a child) and when I went from recovery to my room, they would take me up alone and ask my husband (who stayed with me 24/7) to let them settle me in first and then he could come in the room.

The nurses and staff need that settling in time so that they can have unobstructed contact with their patient with a family member trying to answer for the patient, distract them with questions, etc. The nurse and patient both need to have their entire attention upon each other at this time.

They may have also wanted time for Jahi to be quiet since her mom and gram were obviously not following post op protocol, plus they were likely disturbing others in recovery if they were laughing and talking.

I really feel that SOMETHING happened that the family should not have been doing, whether it was encouraging Jahi to talk and laugh, improper suctioning or sneaking her a treat. Mom and gram could have gone and gotten cola, Popsicle, ice cream or something while waiting to go to Jahi in ICU, then brought it up to her. If mom had a drink and let Jahi have some, could a cola or a drink with a straw cause a problem? ( I know people who have a tooth pulled are advised not to use a straw for a few days because of dry socket)

This would make sense because Jahi was asking about a popsicle and I figure that part of her pre-op instructions were to NOT eat anything after midnight so she may have been hungry or not used to going without food and treats.

We already know that her mom let her take go to the store by herself to get snickerdoodle/ice cream as a treat so I imagine that her mom had promised her all the popsicles, ice cream that Jahi wanted as part of reassuring her before surgery. (Most parents do tell their kids they can have all the popsicles, ice cream to help them feel more comfortable about surgery)

RBBM: I also wonder about this. I've had quite a few surgeries (never throat surgery); but, I have awoke in recovery begging for a drink or ice chips due to a sore throat caused by the breathing tube ... I was denied and offered a sponge thing on a stick to suck on. I imagine Jahi wasn't suppose to be eating or drinking anything.

At this point I'd just like to know the truth no matter where that leads.

Ambulance chasing lawyer (and maybe a lotto seeking uncle) sunk this case for the family IMHO

The family also said that the bleeding continued for a couple of hours. I find it very hard to believe that a patient in ICU would be ignored for hours.

Nailah Winkfield says Jahi was bleeding profusely for hours in the above article. Also remember that at some stage Nailah blacked out and was admitted as a patient, so was not present.

It's mentioned here that the surgery was scheduled for noontime, and then elsewhere it's mentioned she had severe bleeding at what appeared to be a shift change. How long was the surgery and at what time is shift change at CHO?

Maybe the family would have if they hadn't become defensive after having their beloved child called a corpse. That's just wrong. This is a child we are talking about. Even funeral directors show more respect than that.

It just appeared to me (from what I saw in MSM) that the hospital took full advantage of every opportunity to refer to the child with those titles rather than her name to hurt her family. Dead or not she still has a name.

Personally, I was offended. I couldn't imagine if it were my child they were talking about. There should have been compassion.

Admittedly, my feelings are based on a one sided story at this point; but, I still think it was wrong for people representing a children's hospital to be so cold and callous. JMO :facepalm:

I thought this must have been the case. My children have had the comment "name is an asset to our class" on their report cards. It then went on to describe positive qualities and why they were valued as members of the class.

I fully support CHO telling Jahi's family that Jahi is a declared brain dead body, because it's what she is. Medically & legally . . . at this time

CHO and any facility is not callous in reality. They are just doing their job IMHO
