Did you notice how thin her fingers were and how small her little wrist was in the picture of the manicure? jmo

Do you have a link? I must have missed that.

Jahi is doing everything herself, except waking up.

And breathing.

The situation is sad - many parents would not be reasonable under such circumstances, especially if they have certain religious beliefs. I hope they eventually come to terms with reality.

I just hope they stay away from the media and disappear. The world does not need to know how they keep a dead body and insist it is alive. Why can't they just Go Away?!?!

Oh! did she put the nail polish on her fingers & toes to get ready for St. Patricks day by herself???? Then she is alive!

Mom did say she gives her daughter a mani-pedi every Friday. lol

I'm just astounded by this tidbit that was in the article below the Philly interview: "McMath, who is unable to communicate, moves her arms and legs, turns her head from side-to-side and repositions herself in bed -- even sitting cross-legged, Winkfield said."

Uh huh.

I agree, I need to turn in my business administration degree, I should be running a home for the dead with ocean views (Comment would be humorous if it weren't so sad). Jmo

Tracy Davidson interviews Nailah Winkfield and Bobby Schindler

TD: The story of thirteen year old Jahi McMath has gained international attention. The girl from California was declared brain dead after having her tonsils removed. The hospital where Jahi was being treated thought to remove her ventilator and a California judge agreed with that decision, but after weeks of legal battles, the hospital and Jahi's family decided to remove the teen to a long term care facility. Years earlier, the case involving Montgomery county native Terri Schiavo captured international attention. Terri suffered brain damage in 1990 and doctors diagnosed her as being in a persistent vegetative state. The legal struggle that ensued over prolonged life support and the right to die pitted Terri's family against her husband Michael. This morning, those two stories come together and we are pleased to welcome the mother of Jahi McMath, Nailah Winkfield, to our studios. She is here along with Bobby Schindler, who is the brother of Terri Schiavo. He also started the national Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network. Thank you both for being here.

NW: (0:58) Thank you for having us.

TD: (0:59) Now Nailah, tell me. You've sort of been--in private, you and your family have been caring for Jahi. How is she doing?

NW: (1:05) Jahi is actually doing great physically. Um, her skin is flawless. All her vitals are stable. Um, she's not on any meds to maintain anything. She's doing everything on her own except waking up. (Laughs) Um. She's still asleep. I don't use brain dead towards my daughter. She's still asleep. But, physically, she's doing much better since she left from California.

TD: (1:28) And is there movement?

NW: (1:30) She moves all the time. She moves a lot. She can--they have to put pillows around her bed because she's even moved and bust her lip because she's startin' to lift at the waist. She moves her upper [extremities] and always her legs and her feet. So, I'm really happy about that.

TD: (1:48) It's encouraging for you.

NW: (1:49) Very.

TD: (1:50) So, Bobby, tell me about the event that you're both here because of tonight, bringing these two stories together.

BS: (1:56) Well, and it's, it's really in honour of my sister we established this uh not-for-profit and we wanted to uh do something to honour families that really displayed the type of unconditional love that our family had for Terri and, and we saw the McMaths and what they were up against and we just wanted to honour them with this award. We think it's uh appropriate to show how much this family that we support what they're doing.

TD: (2:16) And so tell me about the event tonight.

BS: (2:18) It, it'll be at the Union League. It begins at 6:30--the cocktail reception, uh and then we um we'll, we'll uh begin dinner at 7:30 and um um it's it's it's--tickets are close to being sold out so we're uh, we're happy. We had our first one last year and we're uh, we're hoping for a real uh successful event tonight.

TD: (2:37) (To NW) So, you and your family have really st--stepped out of the limelight and very much private. This is your first interview, and then you'll be surrounded by a lot of people who support after you faced months and months of criticism from other people. What will that be like for you tonight?

NW: (2:52) Be like a breath of fresh air. I'll be very happy to be around people that support me, 'cause even now I'm around people that support me and my decisions with my daughter. Um, I'm looking' forward to it. And, I've been really just focusing on this, Jahi, and nothing else.

TD: (3:10) Even though you've been out of the media spotlight, do you still come across people who you have to explain your position to?

NW: (3:16) I haven't personally come across anybody. Um, I think some of my family probably have, and definitely my attorney, but me personally, I've never came across anybody who was outright rude to me or disagreed with my decision. Everybody I come in contact with says "I am so proud of you, and I'm so proud of your family for what you are doing for your daughter."

TD: (3:36) And, Bobby, what's it like for you to hear her story?

BS: (3:38) Well, it's, it brings back a lot of memories. Uh, and and and we do still have to--we do a lot of speaking in the course of a year and, and people are confusing this issue. So we need, we need to raise a lot of awareness and educate the public. And that's what this event does as well.

TD: (3:52) Right, and we'll tell our viewers about the event. The Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Award Gala is taking place tonight, as you said, in the Union League in Philadelphia. Glen Beck will be the guest speaker and Jahi's family will all be there tonight. Nailah Winkfield, thank you so much.

NW: (4:05) Thank you.

TD: (4:06) Bobby Schindler, thank you so much.

BS: (4:08) Thank you.

TD: (4:09) Appreciate it. We'll be right back.

McMath's mother also takes steps to create a sense of normalcy for her daughter.

"I give her a manicure and pedicure every Friday," she said. "It's mandatory because that's what we did when we were at home."

A sense of normalcy for Jahi or for herself?

"She is blossoming into a teenager before my eyes," said Winkfield, who plans to remain by her daughter's side for as long as it takes.

My rough transcript of second video referred to above.
It's an assembly, and the interviewer's lines are cut, so transitions are choppy. Where it seems to me that NW's words are from the middle or end of a sentence I've indicated the missing words using …
All mistakes are my own.

Nailah Winkfied interview.

NW: I just feel like really honoured that I'm gettin' this award for what I did to save my daughter's life. And, and I've just really been focused on her, and that's why I don't really talk to people. because that's all I'm worried about is Jahi, so, I figure today would be a good day because I'm actually in a, in a better mood and in better spirits today.

(0:19) …fed and being treated, um her energy level is up way more, so she moves around way more than what she did when she was in California. Um, she actually can move her arms, legs, turn her head from side to side, um she can bend at the waist. Um she's just way more responsive. She's um still asleep. I don't use the word braindead towards my daughter. She's still asleep. So I'm just really just waiting and faithful that she will have a recovery.

(0:50) …physical therapy three to four times a week. Um, she doesn't have any IVs, no PICC Lines, no catheters, anything like that. Um She gets food through her feeding tube. Um, she also gets a regimen of vitamins and fish oils through the feeding tube and I give those to her 'cause I just want to be able to do things for her, so I do that for her. Um I give her a manicure and a pedicure every Friday. (Laughs) It's mandatory 'cause that's what we did when we were at home. So I just try to keep everything normal. Um Jahi's not on any medications to maintain anything. Everything's being maintained on her own. So, um, her ventilator's on room air. She's still on a ventilator, but it's on room air.

(1:34)…'cause it was St. Patrick's day, so I actually did clear on the nails, with green tips, with silver across the green tips and her toes are green with black tips with silver across that.

(1:51) (Laughs) The bible. That's literally, that's all I read, and then um I try to do some studying on brain health, and things that will improve brain health, and different cases and studies of things that people use to bring them out of deep comas. Um, so that's pretty much what I'm doing--educating myself and reading the bible.

Yes, I felt NW truly needs something in her life that feels normal, so she's trying to replicate moments that are loaded with memories of happy activities she enjoyed doing with Jahi.

I thought that NW visually relaxed while she talked about giving Jahi the mani/pedicures. There's a quality or tone about NW's other statements that, to me, reflects her determination to focus not on what Jahi's condition is currently, but on what she hopes that it will become after the miracle of recovery takes place.

NW says that she gives Jahi the vitamins and fish oil herself because "...I just want to be able to do things for her, so I do that for her." I would imagine that in NW's current state of anxiety, she desperately needs to ease the need to do something for a child who can no longer breathe for herself, or eat.

I do have a question about the manicures that maybe the medical pros can answer. Wouldn't it be apparent that Jahi's nails are not growing? Could they be growing if Jahi was receiving medication? (I know NW says she's not receiving medication, but she might not be aware of the composition of everything being administered to Jahi.) Wouldn't the bones of Jahi's hands be more brittle now, and harder to manipulate during a manicure? Could the reflex reactions of nerves during the mani/pedis be seen by NW as proof her daughter is just sleeping?

  • #1,035
If Jahi is actually moving, they could take videos and post them just as easily as they post a photo of her hand. Family of Terry Schiavo (who wasn't actually brain dead) videotaped Schiavo to prove she was interacting with her environment. All we have seen with Jahi is a photo of hand (which looks like a lot of weight has been lost).
In regards to nails, my understanding that in a brain dead person on life support, nails will still grow.

I just find it curious that thru all of this the Uncle has kept his IG open and now he sets it to private.

So sad. The interview with Jahi's mom reinforced my idea from the beginning that this is a woman in pain and in very deep denial. This isn't going to end well, and I feel nothing by sympathy for her, even if I disagree with her actions.

Realizing that Jahi is deceased will be a very hard blow. I am praying for her.

That is really strange. Maybe his sister told him to take a hike, lol! I've been expecting trouble between the two of them for a long time now. Betcha it's about money! He wants to continue to live the lifestyle to which he became accustomed. That takes money. Where are his cameras now?

I'm just speculating here so no one shoot me. OTOH, I do need tomatoes!

IMO

"We believe in the protection of and the value of life," said Schindler, who considers this a medical rights issue for the disabled. "Just because ... they can't do what an able-bodied person can do, we don't feel like there is any reason to treat that person any differently than a person who doesn't have to deal with those types of injuries."

So DEATH is now a disability?

"McMath, who is unable to communicate, moves her arms and legs, turns her head from side-to-side and repositions herself in bed -- even sitting cross-legged, Winkfield said."

Jahi is " sitting cross-legged?" How does she do that?

"Winkfield appreciates the facility currently caring for her daughter, saying they refer to her by name and treat her like any other teenager.

Her daughter also has her hair braided and listens to music, like Rihanna and Beyonce, on her iPod regularly, Winkfield said.

"She is blossoming into a teenager before my eyes," said Winkfield, who plans to remain by her daughter's side for as long as it takes.

She listens to her i=pod daily and is blossoming into a teenager? This is so delusional it is heartbreaking.

RIP sweet baby girl. :rose:

I have a very serious question to ask anyone medical. Jahi's mom said she had busted her lip on the bed rail. Will it heal? I assume her blood is oxygenated (sp.) and her lip may have bled, but will it heal?

Thanks so much in advance!
