'Fast & Furious' actor Paul Walker dies in Calif. car crash

I've been reading about this. I wasn't familiar with Paul Walker until this accident.

TMZ reported that someone was trying to back the car into the garage and the Porsche kept stalling. (My guess is that the car was out on display and was being put away as the charity event was winding down.) Rodas got behind the wheel to back it in when Paul asked to go out for a ride. If true, just compounds the sadness...if only he had not asked for the ride.

The autopsy confirms Rodas was still behind the wheel on impact. Since Paul had smoke in his lungs, he is believed to have survived the crash but may have been un- conscious. He then died from the fire and his injuries. Rodas is believed to have died on impact, which I presume means no smoke in his lungs.

The toxicology reports won't be known for about 6 weeks. Was alcohol served at the event in the afternoon? What will it show Rodas had in his system, if anything?

The steering fluid issue seems plausible, that Rodas lost control of steering prior to the crash, but I know next to nothing about cars.

Hi pbj .... apparently it was one of the employees at ae who kept stalling the car trying to back it up so then Rodas took over. Those high perf. cars need to be revved up a bit before letting the clutch out

The "leaking fluid" has been ruled out by investigators.

I doubt there was a steering problem .... the car was sliding sideways and the wheels were fully cranked in the proper direction to stop the slide ... it was simply going too fast and hit the curb before it could be straightened out.

Here is a good street race video to show how quick it can happen , even at lower speeds. This Enzo Ferrari was in a (legal) street-race-rally here in Canada and ended up in the water without hitting anything solid and nobody was injured.

Best wishes

Take it with a grain of salt, but a family friend who is also involved in racing talked to me about the crash yesterday. Apparently, Rodas' shop had an operation that modified these high end sports cars, and at least one previous car they worked on crashed and caught fire in a similar way. There's some speculation that the modifications done made the car catch fire more quickly than it would have otherwise, and now a few people are wondering if the same was a factor in this race. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts the other driver in Florida where this happened was also driving recklessly, to be honest.

I'm guessing that, given the way the car looked, the crash was so bad it would have caught fire anyway. They were going at such a high rate of speed, it was going to be bad regardless. But I am interested if Rodas had done any such modifications, and if it played a part in the fire. Again, take it with a grain of salt, just speculation from friends.

Just a few stray comments. Rodas' shop has said a few times that the car wasn't modified, but they could be wrong or saying that due to liability issues. I too have read even unmodified that Porsche is a very difficult car to handle.

I read a number of times that before the impact people heard a noise that they thought could be a tire on the Porsche blowing out. What do you sleuthers knowledgeable about cars think of that theory?

Thanks, Arnie for your helpful post. Here's a map where the crash took place.

Do folks think Rodas was trying to drift a corner or just going too fast?

Coroner: Car carrying Paul Walker going 100-plus mph

By Alan Duke and Joe Sterling, CNN
updated 3:50 PM EST, Fri January 3, 2014

Los Angeles (CNN) -- The Porsche carrying "Fast & Furious" star Paul Walker was speeding at more than 100 miles per hour when it crashed in November, killing the actor and a friend, according to the final coroner's report on the deaths.

The 15-page report released Friday by the Los Angeles County coroner's office answered several questions that had been the subject of speculation about how Walker and racing team partner Roger Rodas died.

The two men apparently did not live long after the high-performance 2005 Porsche Carrera GT, which was traveling at "approximately 100+ mph," slammed into a light post and tree and burst into flames, the report said...

100mph? the speed limit of the street (not highway!!) they were on was only 45mph...

smh.

According to this article Paul was braced for the crash ...

It has previously been found Paul died from a combination of traumatic and thermal injuries. The report also said the actor had been in a "pugilistic" stance at the time of the crash, meaning he had braced for impact.

http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Pugilistic+Stance

pugilistic stance is a term used in forensic medicine and is a result of burning, not bracing for impact

A ‘defensive’ position fancifully likened to that adopted by pugilists (boxers), which is typically seen in severely burned bodies, characterised by flexion of elbows, knees, hip, and neck, and clenching of hand into a fist; it is caused by high-temperatures in fire, resulting in muscle stiffening and shortening; it occurs even if the person was dead before the fire

did anyone else look at the photo of the burned vehicle before the bodies, clearly visible, were covered?
