The family had their choice of two units, Gabe said. One was a penthouse, the other on the first floor. He said his mom liked the unit on the ground floor better and chose that one — a decision that, six months later, played a role in their survival…
Sara picked up Gabe on her way home and they all arrived back at the building just before 1 a.m., he said.
That’s when the family started hearing loud noises. Gabe said it sounded like construction — but in the middle of the night, it was suspect. So Sara went to the front lobby to talk to the security guard.
“As soon as she goes down to the front, I hear this loud rumble. Like, you feel like an earthquake is happening right in front of you,” he said.
I’m on the phone with 911. I see cars going inwards, underneath the building — underneath the building is the car garage. And in the pool area, you just see everything just sunk down below, underneath. And I hear car alarms going off, I see lights flashing everywhere. And I remember telling 911, ‘I can’t explain anything right now, you guys have to come here ASAP,'” he said.

This family survived the Surfside condo collapse. One son said fate kept them alive. | CBS 17

I can’t even wrap my brain around the thought that some of the survivors want the structure rebuilt so they can move back in

“He wants us to start exploring a potential sale,” Goldberg said of the judge in an email. “He did say he wants the land to be sold and the proceeds to go directly to the victims as soon as possible.”

Goldberg said the decision did not necessarily preclude a buyer from turning at least a portion of the site into a memorial, as some people have advocated. Other survivors want the structure rebuilt so they can move back in.

Interesting call from the woman who heard noises and looked outside. She said the pool deck collapsed in a sinkhole. Then the building collapsed in that sinkhole. We know now that there wasn't a sinkhole. But it must have looked like it to her. How terrifying to have witnessed that.

Rubble Removal?
.... they are taking everything to a location that is removed and locking it away for continued investigation.
@Hope32 sbm Thx for your post. Yes, removed, moved, & kept for investigation & evidentiary uses. Not directing this to you specifically, just jumping off your post now:
Where is 18,000,000 pounds of rubble going?
Inside a structure or in the open, subject to elements & human interference?

Not like this weight & volume can be dumped in somebody's driveway or backyard for a few years.:rolleyes:o_O

It is said that it is being stored in a warehouse ...... same with the personal possessions.

The debris is being sorted and then stored in a warehouse as potential evidence in the investigation into why the building collapsed, officials said.
Finding survivors in Florida condo collapse 'no longer possible'; search and rescue halted

More than 112 tonnes of debris has been removed from the site, with identifiable pieces sent to a police warehouse for use in upcoming investigations.

Each time crews find personal possessions, they take photos and log the location using GPS.
They have made a grid of the pile, knowing approximately where each family's condo unit should be.
Detectives place the objects into a bin. They are taken to an area to be cataloged and sealed in bags. Then they are placed in a locked and guarded cargo container for later shipment to a warehouse.

I've never heard before of such care taken of people's belongings in cases of building collapses, earthquakes etc.

I think they're doing a wonderful and caring thing.

It's in an very large open field. Saw the site on a video the last day or two. Doubt it's open to public.

Additionally, there is a warehouse.

BRB if it's a YT that I can find in history. If it was embedded video in an article, won't be able to find.

ETA: Cannot find video, must have been embedded in an MSM article.

This is one of the earlier articles with pictures and the location where general debris was taken. The location of the warehouse was not disclosed.

Rubble from Surfside condo brought to grassy field in Miami-Dade (contains video of the site)

Some of the debris from the Surfside condo collapse is being brought to a grassy field at the intersection of I-95 and Florida’s Turnpike in Northwest Miami-Dade. The rubble pile is mostly concrete, but also includes clothes and other personal belongings of the condo residents.

Did any of the released 911 calls come from the part of the building that collapsed? So far the calls seem to be from outside observers, residents who got stuck in their apartments in the remaining part after the collapse or managed to get to the basement level, and the Nir family that escaped from their ground floor condo and reported the deck collapse.

911 recordings show panic, disbelief when Surfside condo fell – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports | Fort Lauderdale

I dunno, I get it. It’s not on the same scale, but when my apartment flooded with almost 5 feet of water during Sandy, my roommate and I were upset that our landlord wasn’t fixing the place so we could move back in. I guess it was just the fear of not having anywhere to live at the time and being overwhelmed. We obviously realized it was for the better once we found a new place to live. I am sure in a few weeks they will realize it makes no sense.

Dixie said, in post #703 above ...... "Some incoming calls with nothing following.. some with dial tones... some with busy signals."

I wondered if some of those calls were from victims who tried to call.

Would such calls have been placed before 1:24am when the building collapse started? I doubt anyone was able to make a call from under the rubble afterwards, although one family reported multiple phantom calls (with nothing on them) from their elderly parents in the days after the collapse.

There was also a story about a victim who was alive (back in the threads) but the rescuers couldn't get there in time. If there was one, there may have been more.

If I remember correctly they are taking to a warehouse/facility that is locked.

Yes, that was a woman who was in an apt with her parents. We never learned her name. Her voice was heard for several hours before she went quiet. IIRC she was pinned between beds. Unfortunately early on fire ignited in the rubble and the smoke likely killed potential survivors. In general there was not much chance of finding voids in the debris pile.
