Where in this article does it mention this particular building was sinking?
USA TODAY

A Florida high rise that collapsed early Thursday was determined to be unstable a year ago, according to a researcher at Florida International University.

The building, which was constructed in 1981, has been sinking at an alarming rate since the 1990s, according to a 2020 study conducted by Shimon Wdowinski, a professor in the Department of Earth and Environment at Florida International University.

If I'm correctly understanding the "Concluding Remarks" in the linked pdf... it appears Norfolk VA showed even greater subsidence/affect? Does that mean Norfolk is sinking faster??

Our InSAR results show that in both communities land subsidence contributes locally to higher relative sea level rise rates. In Miami Beach, land subsidence occurred only locally and at very low rates, between 1 mm/yr and 3 mm/yr. In Norfolk, land subsidence affected a larger portion of the territory with rates up to 6 mm/yr (8 mm/yr if considering both relative and regional components). This study shows the importance of considering land subsidence as one of the principal factors that affect the spatial distribution of flooding events and their frequency in low-lying coastal communities.
Hopefully in Norfolk high-rise buildings aren't affected. Also, the data is from the 90s. Sinking could have accelerated since then.

Exposed rebar shown on the several floors around the elevator tower seem to be clean and all the same length. None were torn apart.
Look at WSVN chopper footage.

This is hardly surprising. There are many dilapidated structures in Florida. And no does anything about them. And this is not unique to Miami. Pick any city in the United States, Chicago, Detroit, Houston...Oakland. Many structures are old, rickety, fire traps or on verge of collapse.

This may just be the beginning. We hear about one or two..."How awful.". People forget, then another one...on and on...

True.

It shows Norfolk acceleration per yr was greater than Miami during same time period during the 90's. I found it interesting.

The searchers are hearing people in the rubble now.

Patronis said that rescuers heard an individual earlier today in the parking garage area that they are having difficulty getting to.

“The rescuers are hearing sounds from the rubble,” he said. “It’s kind of hit or miss. You get into the zone where you are so passionate and so focused and so determined to make sure you are doing everything possible to save a life in an event like this.”
Patronis described what search and rescue units are experiencing in the building.

“It’s like going to the gym but it’s not air conditioned, trying to remove rubble but at the same time fearful that the debris around you could come down on you. There’s flooding, there’s fuel, there’s unstable ground, in addition, the challenge of the urgency of saving lives,” he said.

At Least 1 Dead And 99 Unaccounted For After A 12-Story Building Partially Collapses
rbbm.
''Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava offered a bit of "good news" 15 hours after the collapse of a 12-story residential condo in Surfside, Fla., saying 102 people have now been accounted for from the towers.

"Their locations are known and they are safe," Cava said.

Ninety-nine people are still unaccounted for since the building split and part of it came crashing down in the middle of the night.''

''Fire Rescue Asst. Chief Ray Jadallah said rescue workers have shifted efforts from searching from above the rubble to below. He said a parking structure under the building is offering new pathways into the mass of debris.''

From the person who did the research

Wdowinski said his research is not meant to suggest any certainty about what caused the collapse of the condominium. The building was sinking at a rate of about 2 millimeters a year in the 1990s, and the sinking could have slowed or accelerated in the time since.

In his experience, Wdowinski said even the level of subsidence observed in the 1990s typically results in impacts to buildings and their structures, such as cracked walls or shifting foundations. He believes that very well could have been the case for the Champlain building in the 1990s, based on his findings.

“It was a byproduct of analyzing the data. We saw this building had some kind of unusual movement,” Wdownski said.

Miami building collapse updates: Surfside condo search, rescue efforts

I knew I read that yes it was sinking, but that it may not even be the cause of the collapse. It's like from my statistics class CORRALATION does not equal CAUSATION. Therefore it's one of those things that it was noted, but do we really know if it caused it? Not yet at this point.

Plus it was getting ready for it's 40 year inspection soon...
Just hoping it's not as tragic as it could be.

They were going through a 40 year recertification inspection. Yesterday they passed their building inspection. Video tells a bit about what was going on with the 40 year inspection.

You make an excellent point. MSM may be jumping to conclusions associating the building's sinking with its collapse. Time to keep an open mind.
