Good point. I also wondered why the media constantly mentions Peterson’s $104,000/ year pension— they could just say pension and leave it at that.

I once was a news junky but over time it’s obvious there’s an agenda to sensationalize issues and create divisiveness. My elderly Aunt was paralyzed by fear during COVID from constantly watching news coverage.

I absolutely agree this man was made into a monster by the media and local LE agencies failed to support him and prosecutors were blinded by the emotional outrage from shooting.

I pray some of the families come to their senses and stand up in public in support of this resource officer.

What do these families think would happen across the nation if this officer was put in prison?
Do we want security to remain at schools across the nation and show we appreciate people who daily must consider that their life could be in danger? Or will we hold them responsible?

While I don’t agree with comments about “did not rush in” as I was not there, I am thankful for the right to express freedom of speech. The pension amount is irrelevant. In addition, no amount of money will justify the pain that I am sure Mr. Peterson will continue to experience in his lifetime.

Nikolas Cruz who opened fire on 2/14/2018 is 100% responsible for the killings and injuries that day. Mr. Peterson, not guilty on all 11 charges, the jurors got it right.

One of the victim’s dad brought up that officer in Allen, Texas (I think that’s the locale but I could be wrong) who neutralized the active shooter quickly. Just ran towards the gunshots and did his thing! And I understand that in their grief they wish this officer had done that as well because they think maybe their kid would be alive right now if he had! I get it! I’m sure everyone in America and all over the world wishes he had as well!

And this prosecution was still unjust. The families are grieving and we can understand their pain and anger. But what’s the state attorneys office excuse? I don’t live in that community so I don’t know how much pressure they were facing to prosecute! That’s why this smells political to me. JMO

Without an on-point statute to base their case upon, prosecutors tried to make the law fit the facts instead of the facts fit the law, lawyers said. That is always a tougher courtroom battle to win.

The Peterson case “has always been an uphill climb for the prosecutors,” Miami criminal defense attorney David S. Weinstein said. “I feel bad for the victims and their families. Their pain will last for a lifetime. For them, the disappointment in the system continues. It was compounded by the state pushing forward on this case, despite the high odds of obtaining a conviction.”

But Linda Beigel Schulman, whose son, teacher Scott Beigel, died in the shooting while protecting students, said Friday that prosecutors were always upfront with the victims' families that an acquittal was a distinct possibility. This was the first time a U.S. law enforcement officer was tried for failing to act during an on-campus shooting — there was no precedent to compare the case with.

She said that while she is disappointed in the verdict, she does not blame the prosecutors or the jury — “they did their job.”

The conclusion of Peterson’s trial – which ended in a not guilty verdict – released the building from the custody of the sheriff’s office. Now, it’s back in the hands of the Broward County School District, which is expected to demolish it at some point, something the community has long demanded.

Before that can happen, the scene was opened to the 34 listed victims in the shooter’s trial, which includes 17 survivors and family members of the 17 deceased. James Catalano, 62, was sentenced to 12 months in prison by a federal judge, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida said Monday.

The parent became an outspoken gun control advocate following the Feb. 14, 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left their child and 16 other students and staffers dead.

Catalano, of Fresno, sent hundreds of disparaging messages to the parent that graphically described the child's death, prosecutors said.

The messages also focussed on the debate surrounding gun control and the parent's activism against gun violence.

Catalano sent the messages beginning in December 2021 and up until July 2022 through the parent's website, a criminal complaint said.
