I'm a parent in the US, kids in school. I don't have fear when they go off to school.
Ironically, it appears in some studies, Americans have less fear of violence in their communities than Irish, French, Belgians, Koreans, Australians, NZ, Italians.

You surprise me. Im american and I think about it every single day I drop my kids off.

I talk to my children all the time. We talk about fears and life and challenges. They don't say they are afraid of school shootings. You know what kids fear? The same things we feared: bullies that push them or punch, kids that take their things. They worry about the stress of school, increase in work and deadlines, homework, talking in class. My children have never said anything about fear of a shooter. And why would they fear that more than anything else?
Again, super surprised. My kids talk about shootings and are concerned about them.

If he's over 18 I don't see how she could be charged.
Eta... Above post states he is 20.
I agree. Why would the mother be charged? I have read that it was her former service weapon. So, I'm assuming that she purchased it. We don't know if it was secure or not. This kid was apparently a student at FSU. What on earth triggered him to do this? He has ruined so many lives in the process, to include his own.

This article states that the weapon was a former service weapon. I can only imagine that his mother is in shock, too. Two dead, at least five wounded in shooting at Florida State in Tallahassee

So tragic.

Was going to say something made him snap... but no -- he did it to himself, he made himself snap.
We all go through things, some more than others.
Most of us choose not to go on a shooting rampage.

Haven't heard anything about his dad ; were they close ?
No socials that I could find except screengrabs that others took.
Imo.

Imo it depends on where you live and whether or not it’s hit close to home or not. There have been no school shootings within at least 100 miles from where I live. That gives people a sense of security in a way I believe it shouldn’t. But it’s hard to imagine it happening around here. I realize it can happen anywhere. I don’t think or worry about it when sending my grandkids off to school. They have drills at school. Other than that it’s not a common concern imo

Why don't you ask them? If they are old enough to have a conversation about life and its challenges they are old enough to ask them what they think of school shootings. And how so many kids get killed in the US compared to the rest of the world. If you don't want to talk about that, rather than some esoteric subject like life's challenges, why not? Life challenges usually include the subject in the trajectory, whereas getting killed in school effectively ends any challenge that child would have had in the future. I'd rather be talking about it than dealing with the aftermath of one. You mentioned in your earlier post how you'd read an article that stated children in other countries like Ireland, France, UK, Belgium, Korea, etc. have more fear I figure that the kids in those countries have the luxury of knowing a school shooter in their country is on par with finding a needle in a haystack. A lot of people, children included, have a fear of the unknown. Sadly, American children aren't in that group, when it comes to deadly school shootings.

I have asked them. That is what I meant by "we talk." One is in HS and one upper elementary. They have drills in school, we talk about them. We will talk this evening about this shooting probably. School shootings are not fears that they seem to have. They are just another thing to be aware of.

What age are these kids. It's a university but so many of the kids in the videos look like they're 14, quite young.

I'm glad the shooter has been detained. So many times they take their own lives and don't face justice.

The students must have been terrified. I can imagine the fear that US parents must feel sending their kids to school and university, not knowing if one day there will be a shooting.

When the news broke here in the UK it stated four injured, but it appears there has been deaths alongside those injured. So sad and unwarranted.
My sister just got back home (Peru) from visiting unis in Florida with my niece, FSU was one of them; I wonder if this will change their minds

I can’t imagine the fear of those witnessing this and their families, glad they caught them, who knows how many other possible victims were spared

Some students at FSU shooting are Parkland massacre survivors. 😔

When I was growing up the only drills we had at school were for evacuating in case of a fire or earthquake, I cannot imagine my kids having to routinely go through active shooter drills

Anyway, back to the news
