At 18 she is considered an adult and could have stayed at the house without parental supervision like a minor would need to have.
IF her parents would have let her. A person might be 18, but if they live with their parents, they live by the parents rules.

Point taken. :)

I imagine that, if if comes to it, the stepbrother's defence might be that Anna started the fight, and he was only acting in self-defence. Well, his mother might believe it.

If the parents have any. Lots do not. Anything goes in those homes. I've seen it and been horrified, even among some very highly educated high functioning professionals.

Divorce tends to make this even worse because each parent is terribly afraid the kid will just choose to go live with the other parent if they don't like the rules. Then the negative consequences last a lifetime (or 2 or 3). Its tough.

So, why would anyone use a bar hold unless you intended harm? I keep coming back to that. It's not normally a defensive move, it's an offensive move. Only defensive if someone is attacking you (the generic you), usually strangling you, and that would mean obvious marks on the other party.

IMO, it’s just too much ‘noise’! Our world has way too much. (As I dive into details of horrendous crimes…..) 🥲

Yeah, I'm seeing deep seething rage with a bar hold long enough to cause death. Yet I have, unfortunately, known of bar holds begun vertically so as to render a man's other hand to be free to sexually assault in the hope that it would soon lead to acquiescence and no need for further hold. Its an age old sexual abuser's approach when a victim says no but the assaulter tells himself "she really wants it, i just have to get her to accept it by forcing myself on her to get things going". Our culture is full of depictions of that. In some countries, its steeped into the culture and even expected and excused.

~~If the bar hold started out vertical against the door or wall (not much bare wall in those cabins), then she may have kicked him where it really really hurt. Burning hot rage would have been immediate. Then the bar hold may have been taken to the floor where more leverage could be applied, she could be held down, and it didnt end before his rage burned out and she was really really dead. And even then, he may have emotionally felt "served her right".

That it was reported he was immediately hospitalized for the younger child's protection and not due to his own extreme distress and remorse generating mental health crisis or suicide ideation was.. of note.

I know the prelim report said no signs of sexual assault were found but that does not exclude an attempt to some degree that didnt leave marks or evidence on her but that caused her to fight back and thus enrage him.

I'd be curious to hear from his friends and friend's parents if there even are any.

I can tell you, as an 18-year-old girl, I would feel weird having to shower, change clothes, and sleep in the same tight quarters as my brother and a "step-brother" that I barely knew. I would have said something to my father. Of course, we don't know if this father said something like, "You don't have to go if you feel that uncomfortable." Who knows what the conversation was beforehand?

I think that the females should have been in one area and the males in another area if they wanted to take all of the kids with them. This apparently wasn't a romantic getaway.

JMO.
She might have been misled before the cruise about the sleeping arrangements. They might have made her think it would be all the females in one room, males in the other. Or whatever arrangements she was good with.

Someone mentioned up above, Anna, in their opinion, may have been taking a shower. If so then the then Anna didn't start the fight.
Just a thought.

Gosh no; but THEY may have been trying to make it so as much as possible. With all the teens locked away in their own remote space and with younger kids generally sleeping soundly from an earlier time of night and soundly through the night, their "alone time" may have been more important than whatever stuff was going on amongst those pesky annoying teens.

I just lost hearing in my right eye envisioning this grossness

Ha. I just laughed out loud reading this. Vacations were all about family and kids for us. One big tent, or hotel room. And usually we took Grandma with us too. We could be "alone" at home.

We would have never separated our kids from us. Which is also why I never liked that show, "Home Alone", what kind of parents would be in first class on an airplane and leave their children in coach?!

I still believe it was an attempted SA that AK fought back from, and tragically she was overpowered.

RIP she seems like rose in a field of dandelions

Please don't tell me that the younger brother who was locked out and heard the commotion in the room was when the stepbrother attacked and killed Anna. I think so.... Chairs being thrown was perhaps Anna trying to protect herself.
This is awful, and her younger brother has to live with actually hearing this attack that resulted in his sister's death.
For someone who has been on these cruises, is there furniture that can be thrown around? From photos I saw of the type of room there was a queen bed and a bunk bed? If true store, my heart goes out to her younger brother.

Perhaps it wasn't the furniture being throw around but two people moving forcefully in very small quarters, the sounds of bodies against furniture and walls. We know the outcome so we can imagine her fighting against her attacker.

No one on the outside could have imagined they were listening to a murder...

Awful.

I agree - when you hear a sound and dont know the source your brain supplies a suggestion for what it could be, such as furniture being "thrown around" if youre hearing bangs and thumps but it could simply be people grappling and bumping into walls.
