Another logistics point:
Only 10% of Appalachian thru-hikers are heading "southbound". This means that there were very few people heading in the same direction as him and less chance of him passing great chunks of time with acquaintances. The northbound hikers apparently develop more friendships as there is a much more numerous group of folk heading in the same direction. I don't think this was a conscious decision by our guy...I just think he left from the place where he was.

OT He is great! Also did the missing of Jenna van Gelderen, one of my "pat" MP missing persons cases.

I would like to know if he had an foreign accent or a accent from the US

  • #567
There are videos of him speaking. He has no regional accent, and is American.

I've lived in a few different states and have spent time driving around the US (currently one month into this current drive and writing from a campsite) - no regional accent would make me think the Pacific Northwest - and more specifically the urban Seattle/Tacoma/Portland areas. There is no indication that Mostly Harmless is from that area though - so far. New theory... I know there was mention/rumor he worked in NYC but maybe he is from the PNW area. He was guarded and private. Maybe the info about working in tech in NY was just a story. I lived in Portland for a while and his actions don't seem out of character for a PNW native. Of course that doesn't mean his behavior is exclusive to the PNW, but I know quite a few people (myself included) that would walk off into the forest or go off the grid and camp for a while to get a hard reset. In the case that he may have had a terminal illness - live the rest of his live on his own terms, not be coddled and kid gloved and/or possibly not be a *perceived* burden to family and friends around him.

In my opinion, we can't rule out that he really came from the PNW or somewhere out west and was hiding his true origins for some reason. I tend to think he was telling the truth about being a retired IT/tech industry person from New York (his story was very consistent and he met a lot of people and he allowed himself to be photographed). That said, I still keep my eye out for matches elsewhere in the US, especially any area where he could have purchased his gear. For one thing, his tent and puffy coat are both Brooks Range Mountaineering brand and the brand is mostly sold in the western US states. There is one store in the Adirondacks, NY that sells it as well (no where near the AT). And I think it is sold in one or two Midwestern stores. No outdoor stores along the Appalachian Trail or anywhere in the Southeast sell Brooks Range. The tent was made in 2012 or 2013 so there is a possibility he had it for a long time before using it or has been traveling around the country with it since then.

It was suggested by some hikers here that he might have gotten his gear second hand along the trail but I have been scouring photos of AT hikers and hiker blogs and I have not found any photos of anyone else using his brand/model of tent and no one else who had a blue puffy Brooks Range Jacket like his. As I looked through photos, I also took note of the brands most people hiking the AT the last couple years are using and Brooks Range brand of gear was rare to see. So I would not rule out that he came from out West or at least got his gear on a trip out West. I've taken a break from browsing blogs but my next project might be to scour 2012-2013 hiking/camping blogs for trails in the Western Half of the US to see if I can find any photos of people using Denim's same tent.

Came across this missing person 3616DMMN - Bernard Joseph Hudalla

To old probably and most likely DNA available in Namus (can't see that) but he has the same softness in the way he looks. Brown hair, blue eyes, 5'9. He suffers from schizophrenia.

He looks very American. Hard to explain, but they just look different: the build (Americans seem HUGE to me), teeth, gait...

Hahaha, don't know what to think of this and I don't know what your perspective is compared to yourself. I think he is American too, but what is an American (melting pot) I was wondering if he, although speaking, American had a noticeable, slight foreign accent or you could hear he was from a certain part/region in America. I guess someone who spoke to him would have mentioned this by now...so I go for American.

Another shot in the dark. Maybe already acted on, David Robert Tait.

The Doe Network: Case File 4378DMFL

Missing from Florida, 1985, would have been 58 in 2018, after separating his wife. DNA not mentioned. Dark blond, to brown hair, green eyes, 5'8/5'9
I noticed that a sister is one of the sources. He is in Namus, but I can't see the identifiers Missing Person Case

Tait has different eyes.

Tait has different eyes.

In what way? Colors of eyes can change or seen or reported otherwise, especially between blue/gray/green (even hazel) and everything in between. The color of eyes can change slightly after dead. I wouldn't be so sure.

There are some interesting listings for a Benedict Bellamy online.
1)You tube account created 12/5/2015 profile pic clouds, location: NO MANS LAND
2)Linked in account same clouds profile pic mention of Bennett Memorial Diocesan School which seems odd
3)Bellamy Benedict (reversed names) Facebook profile pic water/boat

I can't see anything more than what I have just reported.

I can't find any listing for Benedict Bellamy in the US, but I did find that the hyphenated Benedict-Bellamy is used as a last name in Indiana and possibly in Georgia and Florida.

Great work, EllieGato! This is definitely interesting.

I was able to find a Benedict Bellamy on LinkedIn with the clouds profile pic, but I don’t see anything about Bennett Memorial Diocesan School, so I may be looking at a different BB. The prifile shows he is currently a student at Bennett College, which is located in NC. However, the profile also shows he is in Tonbridge, UK, in which case BMDS would make more sense than Bennett College, as it is located only a few miles from Tonbridge.

As to the BB from Youtube, it appears he “liked” a video as recently as one week ago, so unfortunately, it’s unlikely this is our UID.

I’m not sure about the BB from Facebook as he hasn’t posted much at all that I can see.

I did find a person with the last name “B-B” (this person’s first name starts with an M ... are we talking about the same person?). I found a couple of obituaries where this person is mentioned as a family member, and I was also able to find the person on FamilyTreeNow, as well as LinkedIn. It appears the person is a lifelong resident of Indiana and is African American.

I'm just going to throw this out there, I've been trying to think why his actual photos seemed familiar to me, and I think he reminds me of this missing boy. Would be the right age, he looks very much like him, and would explain the hiker's strange and disjointed history. Too bad there is not an age progression of the boy to compare.
