Another logistics point:
Only 10% of Appalachian thru-hikers are heading "southbound". This means that there were very few people heading in the same direction as him and less chance of him passing great chunks of time with acquaintances. The northbound hikers apparently develop more friendships as there is a much more numerous group of folk heading in the same direction. I don't think this was a conscious decision by our guy...I just think he left from the place where he was.
