The caller said that the body of Carol, who disappeared from Fort Myers on August 4 of the same year, could be found near abandoned cars and wrecked buildings off Coconut Road, near Battista Farms outside Bonita Springs. Carol's parents alerted authorities, who quickly responded and began conducting an air and ground search of the area. During the search, police found the body of a female infant in a ditch along Coconut Road, tied in a black plastic bag. They found no trace of Carol. As of 2022, Carol is still missing.
The infant's body was badly decomposed, although an autopsy revealed the child had likely been born alive. The umbilical cord was still attached. There were no outward signs of foul play, such as broken bones.

Capt. Tom Wallace of the sheriff's department said the Caucasian infant was a new-born with the umbilical cord still attached. The child had been dead several days before the body was discovered.
Authorities said there is no apparent connection between the disappearance of Miss Wolsoncroft [sic] and the discovery of the child's body.

"We don't know if the caller was someone who knew we have a high priority on the Woolsoncroft case and used her name to initiate the search, or if it was actually information about Woolsoncroft and we just accidentally found the baby," Wallace said.
Dan Yount, "No Foul Play in Infant's Death, Report Concludes," Naples Daily News, 10 September 1984, 15A.
Lee County Medical Examiner Dr. Wallace Graves said the infant's body was too decomposed to determine the exact cause of death, but there were no broken bones or injuries.

The infant's body had apparently been tossed in a ditch in a field near Battista Farms some time prior to Aug. 31 when the parents of Carol Woolsoncraft -- a 20-year-old Fort Myers girl who disappeared Aug. 4 -- received an anonymous telephone call from a man who said their daughter's body could be found there. They immediately notified authorities, who combed the area and discovered the infant's body tied in a plastic bag.
