''For the locals of Upware, a small village in Cambridgeshire, the shocking discovery of a body floating in the River Cam on a quiet Sunday morning had brought residents to a standstill. The news was even more shocking for the friends and family of Ian Murray Erskine, a successful banker who had not been last seen since December 1989 before he mysteriously disappeared.

His decomposed body had been found wrapped in a plastic bag three months later, 70 miles from his home in Notting Hill. Due to the deterioration of his body, a post-mortem was unable to determine his cause of death but his card had been used a number of times since his disappearance until it was confiscated in The Netherlands.''

''Two days before he disappeared on December 15, Ian had invited a friend around to his flat for dinner. During that conversation, he had spoken about his friend, a man from Zimbabwe, who he said was coming to visit him on Friday evening.

According to his work colleagues, Ian had mentioned the Zimbabwean man and had said that he had previously served in the Army before travelling to England. It was believed that the two had met through a gay contact magazine in the months before he disappeared.''

''The bank worker disappeared a couple of years after Duncan joined The Guardian newspaper.

He said: “Murray’s credit card was used to hire a car and buy a sailing watch and a ticket to Holland. A few months later, his body was found in the River Cam. It was initially thought that his death might have been related to his work – perhaps he had uncovered money laundering of drug profits – but this was soon discounted.''

“He was gay and the police believed he probably met his killer through a contact magazine.''

''Sometime in the afternoon, the man entered Austin Kay on The Strand and bought a Seiko 8M35 Yacht Timer watch for £200. Police later appealed for anyone with information on the watch to come forward, as it had a distinctive face and had been designed to time yacht races.

Two days later, on December 18, a man booked a Red Fiesta hire car to the Charing Cross Hotel using the same card. Upon meeting with the delivery driver, he provided the relevant documents which the police found were later in Ian’s name. As he was described as a bearded man with a well trimmed moustache, it is believed that he was the same person who had also bought the expensive watch.''

. ''The Red Fiesta car was also returned to its agreed location at Kings Cross Station on December 21, and it was noted that the mileage on the car was over 150 miles, indicating that it had left London.''
