So, occasionally, my bed sort of 'vibrates'. The vibration comes through the floor. It's been happening for years. No idea why. I got to thinking that maybe a sinkhole was forming beneath my bedroom because of this story. So hard to fall asleep last night.

You could have a haunting there. I'm sure that will make you sleep better right! Might wanna call Ghost Hunters out if you have other things going on too.

I live in Hernando county, #2 for Sink hole activity. This is my fear, that I will be home one day and just be swallowed up in the earth. My street has had 6 houses with Sink holes and it scares me. Out main road was shut down 3 times because of it opening up, and this is a busy road. We have sink hole insurance, but they gave us a $20,000 deductable. Yep that is right. So even if we get one, where does the money come from to pay up front costs? We have Citizens, and if you live in FL you know that they are the only ones writting sink hole coverage in Hernando. We have no were else to turn. I want to move in the worst way, but we would take a huge hit on the house and we would have to still pay off the mortage and we would end up with little to nothing to buy a new home. So for now I have to sit here, and hope we are not the next sink hole lottery winners. :(

You need to move, I'd rather take a hit on my house as far as money then to lose my life and family and all belongings. Not worth the risk to me. Money cant buy your life. JMO

The elevation in that part of Fl is only 50 ft above sea level and the aquafer is only 20 to 25 ft below the surface. The aquafer is like an underground stream that most of us who have wells dig in to that which supplies our water. When farmers "hoard" the water it depletes the quota so to speak in which we all share sometimes.

The movement of the stream underground washes away the sand causing an open pocket below the ground,if the pocket gets too close to the surface the pocket caves in.

It's been happening as long as Florida has been around. Really, Florida is just a sand bar.

This is exactly what is happening where I live (south MS). My house sits on a hill. At the bottom of the hill there is a creek. Until I am able to build a dam (hurry up!), the creek, in the meantime, is pulling sand from beneath the hill. Sometimes when I’m out walking the dog in the yard, my foot may sink into a hole about 1ft. deep. It worries me when I think about it. If I ever go missing, chances are I’m in a sinkhole (oh krap).

I was going to say that...they need to get that entire house out of the way now...it's as good as gone, anyway. :(

Then, they can at least see what may be going on ! Probably too late for the poor man, but if it was happening to my family, I would at least want his remains recovered.

What a terrible way to go !!!!!!! And that poor brother will have to live with the memory for the rest of his life !

How awful! I feel terrible for the family. The brother did try his best and almost lost his life. It's a miracle the whole family wasn't lost.

Will they fill in the sinkhole and make a memorial to the man? And the neighbors' homes are in peril!

I'm not an expert on sinkholes by any means, but I find myself wondering if it is even possible to recover the mans remains without jeaprodizing the safety of others and possibly causing additional loss of life.

At this point, I don't recover is possible. As we know, recovery isn't always possible.

Keeping this family in my prayers. This is no doubt a living nightmare for them. Especially the man who tried to rescue his brother.

:(. I know he must not be alive, but if this was my family, the rest of my life I would be haunted by the possibility that he was hanging on in a pocket somewhere. :(

Been gone all day but did catch the early news showing anyone working the area had tethers on because the ground was so unstable.

Here's tonight's article:

Officials say land around sinkhole is very unstable

Early Saturday officials said the Seffner sinkhole situation had gone from bad to worse.

Saturday's news was yet another fearful reminder that the sinkhole is unstable and still growing.

Jeremy Bush, still dealing with the loss of his brother Jeff, says he feels his neighbor's pain.

"I feel sorry for them they had to evacuate their house," Bush said. "It's in jeopardy.

I feel so badly for his brother, he will be haunted forever. It doesn't look like they will attempt to get him out as the home is scheduled to be demolished tomorrow.

Wow Skully, how scary. Citizens stink that's for sure and they had no one to answer to at the time when many had to succumb to what they were selling thanks to the panic from hurricanes. Took advantage of that didn't they?

Can you look in to any other insurance companies? I know they aren't the only ones anymore. We have University Property and Casualty. They've been pretty decent and affordable.

Brother claims insurers checked for risk of collapse months before tragedy

"He said someone came to his home a couple of months ago to check for sinkholes and other issues, apparently for insurance purposes, but found nothing wrong. State law requires home insurers to provide coverage against sinkholes."

"And a couple of months later, my brother dies. In a sinkhole," Bush said Friday."

From above link:

At the home next door to the Bushes, a family cried and organized boxes. Testing determined that their house also was compromised by the sinkhole, according to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue spokesman Ronnie Rivera. The family, which had evacuated Friday, was allowed to go inside for about a half-hour to gathering belongings.

Sisters Soliris and Elbairis Gonzalez, who live on the same street as Bushes, said rumors were circulating among neighbors, with people concerned for their safety.
"I've had nightmares," Soliris Gonzalez, 31, said. "In my dreams, I keep checking for cracks in the house."

They said the family has discussed where to go if forced to evacuate, and they've taken their important documents to a storage unit.
"The rest of it, this is material stuff, as long as our family is fine," Soliris Gonzalez said.
"You never know underneath the ground what's happening," added Elbairis Gonzalez, 30.

Demolition begins for home in Florida sinkhole tragedy

Authorities have said the hole, which was originally about 30 feet deep, was “seriously unstable.
The demolition started at around 8:30 a.m. Sunday, and was expected to continue at least until Monday, authorities said.
Authorities brought in heavy equipment to demolish the home from outside the perimeter of the sinkhole, which Merrill said extends down as much as 50 to 60 feet.
