Found Safe FL - Caden Speight, 17, was found safe (after falsely reporting kidnapping)

Folks on this very forum advise over and over again to not speak with LE until you have an attorney, so maybe that's what they're doing?

If that were my son? LE would have already spoken to him, for as long as they needed.

jmo
If it were my son, he most certainly would have an attorney

Marion County SO has issued an update on their FB page.
The most important points from their update, IMO:

To continue the ruse, Caden, who had a handgun with him since the beginning of all of this, chose to shoot himself in the leg, causing a non-life-threatening injury just prior to walking out to the roadway where he would be located by citizens in Williston. There is ZERO chance that Caden’s gunshot wound came from any type of assailant.

Many of you have asked, “Will Caden be facing any charges?” “What about the taxpayer cost of this large-scale investigation and search?” I can tell you those items are not off the table at this point.

Naturally, my detectives had a lot of questions for Caden, however, his parents refuse to allow my detectives to speak with him.

Shame on him AND his parents for not cooperating.
IMO.
Seems like a cry for help. If I'm reading correctly, he bought the bike/sleeping bag, then shot himself then probably realized " THAT HURT" walked out to the public and was located? I don't see a link so I'm going off of the above.

What in the world is this child going through that shooting himself in the leg and riding a bike into nowhere seemed like the best way out?? Is he under extreme pressure to excel (past normal limits of pushing your child to succeed) by his parents? Is he having mental health issues? Substance abuse issues? Being abused by someone? This is different than our normal run and hide cases, to me. Maybe he isn't being allowed to talk for another reason....... Maybe it is because he WILL talk. 🤔

This whole case makes no sense. I’m not ready to throw his parents under the bus yet. We need more facts about why he did what he did. They could be parenting a son who has issues we aren’t aware of.

I haven't followed this story as closely as others here, and this is the first I'm seeing that HE SHOT HIMSELF! This is DEFINITELY a cry for help that goes beyond filing a false kidnapping report.

I wonder if the parents understand Obstruction of Justice law in Florida? Maybe they’re interviewing attorneys.

This boy needs a lot more help than his parents can give him. I hope they put their egos and pride aside to get the boy help, before they lose everything financially.

Surely they are seeking psychological help. Obtaining an attorney before talking to LE is the smart idea.

Honestly, if my son did this and even shot himself, I would probably make sure he had medical, psychological, and legal help before being interviewed by authorities.

This young man might be on the verge of a complete mental breakdown. There is no rush. He can face legal issues and do community service once he's healthier.

I agree.

Sometimes a child will attempt (or sadly even succeed in) suicide as a cry for attention. It's complicated why they may see such an extreme act as something that would fulfill their need for attention, but imo, this is not that rare. I speak from personal experience from when I was 16 years old. I couldn't explain it then, and as an adult today, I still can't. But I know it happens.

Maybe this is a similar situation here. I'm not saying this was a suicide attempt. But maybe he carried out this perplexing series of extreme acts in the same way that some young people do attempt suicide as a cry for attention.

Sorry that you felt that way at 16, and I know exactly how you felt. I would also say it's more than a cry for attention. Self-harm like this shows a need for some real ongoing help, even if the person doesn't realize what or how much they really need. I now see the need for family therapy, if at all possible, too.

I wonder if the kid accidentally shot himself with a firearm he wasn’t supposed to have?

The scheme seems kinda backwards, reactive. Planning a leg wound, alerting parent, breaking phone, cycling, and then buying the equipment? Why?

If it’s an attempt to cover up a mistake, it makes sense.

Could be defiance, refusal to admit he broke a rule/acted dumb with a gun, panic and adrenaline leads to a story that explains why he was shot, makes him a victim, distracts parent. Runs away from the problem.

Definitely!!!!! 17 year old boys are in a hormonal frenzy with a developing brain. And outside pressures are high, getting close to college / move out decisions. I remember my senior year of high school my mom got overly strict but I was leaving to live on my own in 4 months. My brain couldn't reconcile the need to do that when I would be without any supervision soon, so we battled a good bit. Tons of reasons it could be happening, none having to do with the parents fault. I was definitely just throwing out some options. Thanks for mentioning that.

Thanks for sharing, that’s a great point to make. Funny isn’t it, to look back and see things through a different lens.

Surely the parents have got an Attorney for him by now, has there been mention of that?

I was under the impression that his leg wound (shot himself) wasn't until right before he was found. So not at the outset. MOO.

My thought is he shot his truck, sent his text, and took off on his bike. (Maybe he was mad at his parents, wanted them to feel sorry/worry that something bad happened to him?) He probably didn't think his case would blow up like it did. He made it to another town, realized the story/search was getting much bigger/more involved than he expected, so he shot himself in the leg, came limping out from where he was hiding/staying, and asked for help, which led to his "discovery". All MOO.

Eta: @Leilei's earlier post confirms the timing of the shot based on LE's statement:

Did any1 think maybe he is telling the truth, that he wasn't lying at all. Maybe he told them he wouldn't turn them in and tell on them, if they let him go and they threatened back if you do we will kill you and your mom? Since they said it was a false alarm b/c of him lying, he should do volunteer community service and work with missing children in helping with those victims and also pay back the money spent in trying to search for him.

Then what would be reason for buying bike and tent?

Wasn’t there a witness who saw him on the bike also? IMO because I can’t remember exactly

'COMPLETELY MADE UP': A Florida teen whose mysterious disappearance prompted an AMBER Alert and a widespread search last week was never kidnapped and shot himself in the leg, Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said. https://bit.ly/4pJRpBP

Sheriff Woods said they did find evidence of a single gunshot in the area where the boy left his truck, but that further investigation revealed he had a handgun with him throughout the incident and shot himself in the leg.

“There is zero chance that [his] gunshot wound came from any type of assailant,” Woods said.

Later on Friday, the teen was found safe, with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, in Williston, Florida, which is around 30 miles away from Dunnellon.

The sheriff acknowledged that community members have expressed concern about the resources wasted during the search and have been asking if the teen will face charges, to which he replied that nothing is off the table at this point.

MOO No, I don't think he said anything that's true. From the link below: "MCSO said the bike, tent and other camping supplies were purchased from Walmart just before a shooting was reported, which authorities initially thought was related to his disappearance." And why would these four random men want to kidnap a random kid in a truck? He had a gun and ammo on him, so why wouldn't he defend himself when they forced him into their van?
