I don't understand how the doc could say that JS had to be insane because sane people don't kill their children. What about child abuse? Are all child abusers insane? Or does that only apply to killing children? What if they killed their child while abusing them? Is that an accident, or are they insane?

That just makes no sense to me.

Can somebody tell me when getting tanked on alcohol and drugs suddenly became 'self medicating'?

Very simple. Self medicating. Helps you to be more comfortable in your own skin.

At first a glass of wine will do, then it requires two or three glasses of wine. It is progressive........eventually you need bottles of wine. then the alcohol stops working and you are a falling down drunk. Same thing for prescription meds.

I hope you will learn a bit about addictions and MI and become more forgiving of the disease and those who suffer from it.

Dr. S: I don't think she could think clearly during this time. Even though she had psychotic thinking, she could look normal. Psychotic people can appear normal. On automatic pilot -- knowing how to behave -- due to learned behavior. Being on automatic pilot, because she is intelligent and has great social skills, as wife of military officer, she could rise to the occasion of being appropriate socially.

At time of shooting, her mindset -- she was in a psychotic state -- for example, when she was walking with the gun in her purse, to take Beau to soccer practice, she makes the mental note that she has to wash Beau's dirty laundry (even though she's getting ready to kill him)

Covering the children is an example of psychotic behavior -- checked on them several times, talked to them, in psychotic confusion

She intended to kill herself -- people knew she was suicidal -- she'd made 2 other suicide attempts. She had a 3-part plan to kill herself

Don't get me started. :facepalm:

Isn't it impossible for a person to face their own problems, shortcomings, demons if an excuse can be slapped across the problem? Stop enabling the bad behavior and maybe the person has to grow up and accept responsibility.

Small wonder JS didn't go to AA and if she did it was forced, part of in house treatment. IMO JS didn't want to take any responsibility for her self indulgence.

My partner had a psychotic episode a couple of years ago. He has MDD and was on lithium at the the time. He said there were moments of 'clarity'.....as if he was in an elevator, and periodically, the elevator doors would open......and he could see 'reality' for a brief second.....and just as quickly, the doors would close again.

That is an excellent analogy. Thank you for sharing it. A good explanation for those unfamiliar with mental illness.

That's the term used in therapeutic, medical, and rehab language. It's another description of addiction.

In JS' case, she used alcohol instead of, and to the detriment of her meds...hence, 'self medicating'.

So when I drank like a fish and abused drugs for those many years I wasn't having a major pity party??? Ya mean I didn't have to go to AA and find out until I accepted responsibility, until I grew up, I'd still turn to chemicals to escape?

Man If I had known I was 'self medicating' I could have been really feeling bad for poor, little, misunderstood me.

Dr. S's testimony guilty feelings about 2 abortions prior to having children. Dr. S is a clinical psychologist. Evaluated many people for court for competency -- 30 to 40. Has been a Forensic Psychologist for several years, but primarily clinical work. Around 10 times has evaluated pts for sanity for court cases. Worked for State team in one previous case where she gave opinion on sanity in a criminal case. Eddie Lee Sexton. On defense team, but in the murder trial, she testified for the State. Testified as to Willie Sexton's sanity in the trial for Eddie Lee Sexton.
