I will admit that I have been outraged by this case, from day #1. I have looked at CR, through the hearings that he has had, and just exclaimed (to myself) in exasperation: "How the heck did this happen?" He was not in fear for his life. He was packing.
I do not blame Reeves' wife, daughter and son for being in his camp and trying to save him from prison. I'd do the same for my father -- in fact, I'd die for him. It is such a tragedy that, after a glorious career, here he is with this looming over him. My heart goes out to his family who has supported him all their lives.
Unfortunately, Nicole Oulson lost her beloved husband, and their little girl lost her devoted father. When compared to a few seconds of illicit use of a cell phone, something Reeves himself had been guilty of doing just minutes earlier. However, that fact never comes out in trial except a fleeting mention by the prosecutor. A deal was cut, and no issue would be made of Reeves' use of his own cell phone in the theater. No mention of his gun being brought into the theater either. Signs were posted. No guns permitted. But that policy was not brought up either, at trial. Reeves got some breaks during the course of his trial. When it all comes down to it, Chad Oulson should not have had to pay with his life, for using his cell phone or spilling popcorn -- whatever. His human life was worth so much more than Reeves' "rights".
I sincerely hope, and I believe, that justice will be done.
