There is actually a movement where people ARE giving things for free. It's been building for years now and most recently around here has been used after Newtown as a way to pay tribute to the victims. Random acts of kindness and paying it forward. It is fun. It is life-affirming. Sounds to me like the mom thought she was just going to be on the receiving end of one such act.

It's too bad monsters like this guy make the world so cynical.

I have never heard anything like that in my entire life. Does this movement consist of taking a family in a van and driving them to the store? This mother lived nowhere near Newtown, Connecticut. To think that the strange and creepy man was just doing a random act of kindness....One would have to never have watched the news in her life (so think that bad people don't exist).

If I were shopping at a dollar store and some old guy offered to buy me clothing, unless I was born yesterday, the obvious idea is that this guy wants something in return.

Random act of kindness? She knew nothing about this guy. Why get into the car with him? I mean, how naive can one be?

I should think that the story of Charish's murder would do that all on its own, without the Wrath of the Internet having to be invoked.

It's called dialogue. And without dialogue, nothing is going to change. Nothing.

Yup. If someone wanted to do a random act of kindness, they would pay for the purchase in the Dollar Store, or they would give the family some $$ or a gift certificate. Yes...this creepy man just wants to help! Heck, even before she let her daughter go off with him to McDonald's, the entire family gets into his van. Who does that?!

Way of topic here......One evening my DH and I were driving through In-N-Out burger to get a couple of hamburgers, and when we got to the window to pay the cashier told us the woman in the car ahead of us had paid for our too. We were shocked! We thought for a minute and told the cashier we would pay for the car behind us. I have to admit, we left with warm fuzzy feelings. It was really nice.

Wait a second...

Police say a mother of a child found dead was first lured to an area Walmart by a stranger offering to buy her a dress

Detectives said Don initiated a conversation with the girl's mother, asking her if she wanted a dress.

The suspect, according to the report, said his wife had a $100 gift card for Walmart but that the girl's mother would have to wait until the suspect's wife arrived to use it.

He offered to buy the mother a dress! WTH...This entire time, I thought he offered to buy clothes for the children?!

I am not saying she didn't make a terrible decision. She did. Everyone does at some point in life. However, there IS good in this world. Such acts are not unheard of. I've performed them myself. I've had them performed for me. The world is neither all sunshine or all shadow.

She was naive. She was trusting. Her daughter paid the ultimate price for that. But the only person to blame for Charish's murder is the monster who killed her.

Let's not make this movement into bigger than it actually is. But do you really think this mother is aware of all that? Her actions show someone who is extremely naive. She seems to believe that bad people don't exist in the world which tells me she has never watched the news. She thought this man was offering to buy her a new dress at Wal-Mart as an act of kindness in response to a school shooting 1000 miles away?

The idea sounds wonderful I just can't buy the idea that this mother thought it was FREE and it was ok!
I would also like to know did she call her BF before going off with this monster with his babies in tow?
Was her BF not worried it took them hours to go to a DG!
Something is just not right here!

If you read what I said I said it had started long before Newtown. If you look at the links I posted they are across the country. But no, I wasn't saying that's what she thought. I don't know what she thought. I was saying it is not inconceivable that she thought someone was just randomly being nice. It's so easy to sit in judgment after the fact. She's even doing it to herself per the interviews. She obviously didn't think this is how this would end. And yet, I've seen more vitriolic reactions to this mother for being naive than I've seen thrown at parents elsewhere on this board who are actually responsible for their child's demise.

I'm thinking back over the times when clients grumbled and groused over the fact that social services benefits include components such as home visits and mandatory living skills classes (including parenting classes). The very next time a mother complains that we are violating her civil rights by insisting on visiting her home and wonders why she is required to take parenting classes, I am pulling out a copy of a news report on this case and saying, "THIS is why!"

It seems that she is also blaming her daughter what happened to her. She claims that she didn't let Cherish go off with Smith, and the last thing she heard her daughter say was cheeseburger. So now according to her, it was 100% her daughter's own choice to go with Smith.

Jmo, I bet he knew Mc Donald's would be closed. He probably told her we'll just run up the road to the other Mc Donald's. I'd almost bet that's how he got her out of WalMart without a struggle.

Of course he did. Cherish watched her mom trust this guy, so I have no doubt she thought if mommy trusts this guy, I can too. That's how kids are.

google pay it forward... I've heard of it often, and have even done a few good deeds :)

but there is a big difference in paying for someones meal and risking your safety. no comparison.

I doubt the mother would let Smith go off with a material possession, yet she let him take her daughter. :(
