Be street-smart and protect your kids
Advice and precaution to avoid abductions

The recent headlines on sex offenders and abductions reminds parents, grandparents and other caregivers of their worst nightmares. If you're not around, even for a moment, and a stranger approaches your child— would your child know what to do?

There are precautions you can take as a parent and caregiver and information and skills you can teach your child to prevent an abduction. Former FBI agent Clint Van Zandt lectures on child and family safety and offers the following tips for you to share with your children:

Setting the stage
It is very important to approach the subject of safety in a non-threatening way. We do not want to make children fearful of potentially dangerous situations or people in general, but we do want to teach them to be cautious and to be able to recognize when something may be wrong. The key is to help children feel empowered and to encourage them to develop and trust their intuition. We want to teach them to be able to talk to you, their caregiver, when something is bothering them. Open communication between parents and children is one of the most important aspects to protecting your child from predators.

In my opinion, he must have been out searching for a victim. If he convinced the mother to meet him and his "wife" at Walmart, his plan must have been set in motion. What did they do all that time in Walmart and where was the "wife" with the gift card?

But it must stop this from happening again. Unless she's the only mother in the world who let a complete stranger go off with her daughter.

Jumpin'....

And is she the only mother who voluntarily gets in a car with a complete stranger...with her children in tow?! This tragedy began unfolding long before the word "McDonald's" was ever mentioned.

Paraphrasing from the reporter:

She [the mother] thought meeting him was a blessing at first. In Wal-Mart, she didn’t realize the daughter had gone with Smith at first. Smith yelled across the store that he was going to get some food and asked if she wanted anything. She said she heard Cherish say “cheeseburger” and did not realize her daughter went with him to the restaurant. That was the last word she heard her daughter say.

Wait. It took her 30 minutes to realize her daughter went with him?!! Is there a timeline for their time at Walmart? Am I misunderstanding, that she didn't notice for 30 minutes?

I'm confused about the whole time frame.

Out of all the mothers in the world...This man happened to find the one who completely trusted a stranger. I don't believe at all that this is a mistake that anyone could make. I think most women would be weary of any man who approaches them especially at night. I heard that predators know what to look for to see if someone is vulnerable. For example, perhaps he saw that the mother didn't have enough money to pay for her purchase at the store. Did he purposely go to to the Dollar Store because he needed someone who had very little and would be more willing to trust him? He easily could have tried this rouse with a mother who have reported him to the store or LE with "I have a bad feeling about this guy". We tell our children about the rouses that kidnappers use, and in this case, it was the mother who fell for it, but her daughter was the one who paid with her life.

Sexual predators are very calculating and manipulative; con men. With each victim, they become more persuasive and convincing. Elizabeth Collins(10) & Lyric Cook(8) were abducted in Evansdale, Iowa July 13/2012. Later found deceased. In May of this year, 100 miles away and 10 months later, two more girls Katylynn Shepard & Dezi Hughes were abducted. Dezi escaped the predator's wrath, but 15 yr old Kathylnn was later found deceased. M. J. Klunder; a sexual predator with a decades long violent history of sexual crimes against children had abducted them and comitted suicide, once he knew that he was caught..
He used a manipulative ruse; 'asked them if they wanted to make some money mowing lawns'. "Get in my truck and we will go get permission from your parents"..

Experienced Sexual Predators will use various ruses to gain compliance of their victims.. Simply very convincing con men...
'Please don't blame the victims' and teach your children to trust their natural instincts...

Another local channel (Channel 4 WJXT 11 PM news) provided a timeline of the police alerts to local news. They did also timeline the earlier events at both stores but I didn't catch them. I was focused on the Amber alert timing.

JSO alerts media at 12:29 (no mention of child abduction, 1:45 update again no mention of child abduction, and again at 4:40 AM no mention of child abduction. At 5 AM, media told about the kidnapping. Amber alert issued by FDLE 5:28 AM.
Van spotted about 9 AM by JSO. JSO received call about suspicious van at the church a few minutes before Smith was stopped on I-95 near the I-10 merge. 10:23 K-9 responded and body was found.

Also, In Jacksonville the police scanner channels are scrambled so they must rely on police-issued reports and their own investigation.

Interview with a neighbor of Smith. His mother is elderly and he's lived there about 10 years.
http://www.actionnewsjax.com/conten...call-odd-behavior/xcCOhWVFbE2ckuPPVlsGvw.cspx

"He bought a little stuffed horse and put it right by the driver's dash, and I said to my husband he's doing it to attract kids-- that's so obvious."

I saw her (the neighbor) interviewed on the news, she had called the police about his strange behavior recently since she thought he was supposed to be in jail still, but he's been released and there was nothing JSO could do.

WTH were they alerting the media about if it wasn't a child abduction?

Victoria Stafford from Woodstock, Ontario was lured by a woman who led her to a car where Michael Rafferty was waiting. Tori was abducted and driven to a remote location and raped then murdered.

It happened when school was letting out for the afternoon.

Sex offenders prey on the trust of children and parents. Every day there is a story in the news about a parent, family member, coach, teacher, police officer, scout leader, neighbor, etc. that has abused a child.

Nobody is to blame but the offender.

I think just about a generic incident at Wal-Mart, perhaps. I wish I knew for sure. That seems strange. I'll try and find more info out if the JSO rebuts it or other news sources weigh in on what they were told.

Articles indicate JSO and other LEOs were searching overnight, choppers and all. I wonder if they kept it out of the press overnight in some hope for her safety/life. Once it hit the press it was probably more likely than ever that Smith would think he was cornered and kill her, if he hadn't already.
Completely my opinion and guess/conjecture only, not enough info to hazard an educated guess on what the news sources were told overnight and why.

This delayed Amber Alert must be adressed, imo.. an Amber Alert is futile once the child is deceased. Damn the prosecution..Priority should be to rescue the innocent child victim which only has a 3 hour window for survival in most cases of abduction by a sexual predator. tragic, imo..

"Without Public Safety for our Children, we have Nothing"..
The American Public is analogous to a security camera across the USA and is the most valuable resource in missing children/person's investigations....why squander this valuable resource?

I think all Sex Offenders need to have a tattoo on their face indentifying them as such.
The Cheek. That way it cant be hidden!

I totally agree. I used to watch "Lockup" on CNBC & it showed a photo of an SO who other prisoners grabbed and tattoed "Katies Revenge" on his forehead.

I hope this 🤬🤬🤬 gets what he deserves, but in reality, he probably won't. Even lwop is better than he deserves.

My prayers are with the family.

Rest in peace Charish :rose:

In the "Dateline" episode now about a woman in Florida who was killed by a drifter she befriended...the drifter was taken into the home by another single woman, with two little kids, before the murdered woman took him in. People do careless, even stupid things all the time. Mostly, they get away with it, but not always.

From an interview this evening by local news with the mother:
Rayne Perrywinkle tells Action News that Donald Smith approached her inside the Dollar General on Edgewood Avenue, after he overheard her telling her daughter that she couldn't afford a dress the girl was asking for.

"He saw me putting things back because I couldn't afford them, and he offered to help me pay for some other items with a Walmart gift card that his wife had. We waited in that parking lot for a long time for her to come to the store, but then he said she [his wife] wanted him to meet her at the Walmart."

Perrywinkle told Action News she thought Smith was "creepy and annoying," but eventually seemed genuine in his offer to help.

"Part of me wanted to believe this was a blessing for my children, and that's what I kept telling myself, but when we got in the car I felt very tense and was sitting straight up."

Perrywinkle says she felt uneasy as soon as she got into Smith's van.

Perrywinkle says Smith continued to follow her every move inside the Walmart and insisted his wife was on her way. As they waited for his "wife" to arrive, he yelled "from across the way" and said he was going to McDonald's for a burger.

"He asked if I wanted anything and I heard Cherish say 'cheeseburger.' I thought she stayed near me. I didn't realize she went with him. I didn't let her go with him like people think. He was creepy, so I wouldn't have let her go, I just didn't realize she was gone."

Director Mike Williams of the JSO's Investigations and Homeland Security Division said Saturday that the amount of time between Cherish's disappearance and the time her mother called 911 for help was "not long."

Prior to the alleged abduction Friday night, Smith, 56, befriended Charish and her mother at a dollar store, and “offered to take them to Wal-Mart and buy her family some clothes,” Williams said.

“They appeared to be down on their luck and he could help them out.”

After spending a couple hours inside the Wal-Mart together, Smith offered to buy hamburgers and walked with Charish to the front of the store, Williams said.

Instead of stopping to buy the snack, Smith walked Charish outside and the two of them got into his van, Williams said.

Jmo, I bet he knew Mc Donald's would be closed. He probably told her we'll just run up the road to the other Mc Donald's. I'd almost bet that's how he got her out of WalMart without a struggle.

Why is the mother talking to the media when her daughter was found brutally murdered less than 24 hours ago? It's like she's worried about her reputation or how the general public is perceiving her right now. What's up with the in-depth interview?

Well she certainly is not making herself look any better.

Too bad there is not a license for parenting like one to drive a car. This never should have happened.

Really? This mother is not some poor waif, homeless, single mom!! She has a live in bf which she has 2 kids with!! The father of Charish has joint custody. He fought for custody of his little girl and lost.....Charish lost. It is NOT "understandable" to me why the mother made any of the decisions she made! Unless, she is not mentally stable. Just like the grandmother of the other little girl....what are these people thinking???? Come to a McDonalds to have a child examined for sexual abuse????

STOP making it so easy for these abusing, murdering perverts!! The court system and judges are doing that over and over. It's up to parents, caregivers, grandparents, etc. to protect our babies. How many more have to be lost? How often do we hear of moms live in abusing or killing her babies? Yet, there is always an excuse for mom and the courts go right along and allow the perverts to roam free to abuse again or kill.....
