Anyone have anything on this case?

CCSO Case # 85-06-1115 Name: Unknown (John Doe) Incident Date: June 14, 1985 Age: 60 to 70 Race/Sex W/M Circumstances: On June, 14,1985 the body of a white male was discovered on County Road 490, east of Rock Crusher road. The body had been beaten and set on fire while still alive. At the time of his death the victim was wearing black pants, white shirt, black boots and a windbreaker. The victim had white hair, blue eyes and pronounced body hair on his shoulders and chest. The victim had no teeth and sutures in his lower lip that indicated recent oral surgery.

Might be a longshot but have been looking at case of Ronnie Henderson
missing since May 31, 1985 from Naples, Collier County, Florida. Ronnie was a boat captain out of Marco Island and left on a fishing trip - never returned. Possible that he was a victim/participant in a drug pickup offshore in the Gulf and ended up being murdered. The UID composite may not be much to go on as the UID was burned - the dentals could be easy enough to check against Ronnie to see if he had oral surgery of that kind.

The distance between counties appears to be about 3+ hours, but it looks like a straight shot down the gulf coast?

The two men have similarities and the sutures that indicate oral surgery could fit as Ronnie Henderson looks to have a downturned mouth and it looks like a little "sinking" in his jawline (like a person who doesn't have bottom teeth).

I'll let others voice their opinions on this- I'm just a novice (and my eyes get weary).

Citrus County John Doe is featured in a new exhibition hosted by The University of South Florida’s Institute of Forensic Anthropology & Applied Science (IFAAS).
New USF Art Exhibit Aims to Help Solve Cold Case Homicides
Exhibition displays consist of clay busts and drawings, digital compositions, artifacts and information about the crime scenes. Kimmerle, USF graduate students and Sgt. Sergio Soto, a forensic artist with IFAAS, created the reconstructions and exhibit. Their work is part of the ongoing statewide cold case initiative by IFAAS, for which the team conducted a number of forensic methods - such as exhuming Jane and John Doe graves for skeletal analysis, facial and clothing reconstructions, chemical isotope testing of the bones, hair and teeth, as well as DNA testing.

Case 14: Fire on the Roadside

usf17-036c-facial-logo-ff.jpg

Facial Composite & Associated Belongings: Erin H. Kimmerle

The remains of an adult man were found burning along a roadside in the early morning off County Road 490. At autopsy facial injuries were observed as well as the decedent having no teeth. The victim was clad in black slacks, black dress shoes, light blue socks, a white button down shirt with blue stripes, and a nylon windbreaker. A large brass crucifix, black smoke pipe and Tampa Nugget matchbooks were present in his pockets. Unknown, he was buried in a John Doe grave until exhumed by IFAAS, the medical examiner and Citrus County Sheriff’s Office for analysis. The remains are those of a 35 to 55 year-old man of White (European) ancestry. He was 5’6” to 5’9” ft. tall. The manner of death is a homicide. Chemical isotope analysis suggests he was local to the Southeastern U.S.

Investigators made a breakthrough in identifying a victim from a 33-year-old Citrus County cold case, but detectives still need the public’s help in giving him a name.

Authorities recreated the face of a white man whose body was found in June 1985 burning alongside West Homosassa Trail in Lecanto, according to the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office.

This man is roughly 65 years old, 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighs 134 pounds and has blue eyes and gray hair.
---
A passing motorist found the man’s body, which they first thought was burning trash, at around 2:30 a.m. on June 14, 1985, on the side of West Homosassa Trail, near the intersection with State Road 44, Holloway said.

Holloway said detectives found no identification and ruled his death as a homicide.

“He was set on fire,” said Holloway, who would not elaborate on other causes of death. “He wasn’t burnt beyond recognition but he was burnt pretty well.”

From what remained, investigators determined the man was not homeless, and was wearing blue pants, black lace-up shoes, light blue socks and possibly remains of a metal helmet.

Also found in the man’s possession was a gold, handheld crucifix, part of a smoking pipe and a “Tampa Nugget” matchbook.
---
Holloway said the man had no teeth, but his mouth appeared like it was being prepped for dentures.
---
Last January, police and Citrus County officials exhumed the man’s body from an unmarked grave in the Stage Stand Cemetery, a county-owned site in Homosassa, Holloway said.

I know this is a super old case but I'm hoping this man will be getting his name back soon!

I was contacted today because I submitted my DNA to GEDMatch and I matched as a cousin to him (2nd-4th). I don't know who he is because I was an infant when he was murdered, but I've reached out to my family members hoping they may know of someone who went missing at that time.
The investigator told me that he is believed to be of Irish descent, which pin points only one branch of my family tree.

In case anyone is following his case I will try to keep updated! We are getting ready to go through the family tree and talk to more relatives.

Good luck. I can’t imagine the frustration of knowing a UID is related to you but no idea how or who. Please keep us updated and let us know if there is anything we can help with.

Do you have family members from the southeast? Florida? That's really interesting that they contacted you and you are a relative. My DNA is on GEDMatch also and I've always wondered if they would contact me one day about a distant relative missing out there I don't know of.

John D. McKinnon, "Man's burning body found on Citrus County road," Tampa Bay Times, 15 June 1985, HT8.
Man's burning body found on Citrus County road_.jpg

It appeared that the body was set on fire after being soaked with some kind of chemical or fuel, said Sgt. Henry Wilkins of the Citrus County Sheriff's Department. Investigators were unsure whether the man was already dead when the fire was set or if he died from the burns. Wilkins said the man had suffered a head wound -- apparently caused by a blow to the head and not by a gunshot -- but the wound was not fatal.

A Homosassa man first spotted the body as he drove by it just after 2 a.m. Friday. The man, Jeffrey Hudson, said he had come to the top of a slight rise in the highway when he saw the flames reaching 2-3 feet into the air about 40 yards away.

"At first I thought it was log that had been hit by lightning, and I was going to stop and put it out," he said. "As I pulled up on it, I slowed down from 55. It was real dark. And then I realized what it was. It was lying right beside the road and I didn't realize until I was 10 feet from it what it was. ... It was pretty upsetting. The thing that bothered me was there was no one else around."

[...]

When it was spotted, the body lay on its side on the north shoulder of CR 490, about a mile east of Rock Crusher Road, Wilkins said. The area in Central Citrus County is sparsely populated, and officials said they had few leads or witnesses.

According to Lt. Terry LaCasse, there were no crashed or abandoned vehicles in the immediate area where the body was discovered. Little evidence was found, other than several spots of blood on the pavement and underneath the man's head.

[...]

The driver of the next car was Chris Andrian of Inverness, who said she saw Hudson in the road and recognized him from high school.

"I saw a little fire," Andrian said. "I thought it was a flare. And then I saw him standing in the road with his hands clasped like he was praying. I thought he was having car trouble."

When she stepped, Andrian said, Hudson asked her to look at the burning object and tell him what she thought it was.

"I asked him what he thought it was, and he said, 'A body,'" Andrian said. "I didn't want to, but I drove up and looked at it anyway. And then I saw the shoes, and realized it was a body."
