GUILTY FL - Denise Lee, 21, raped & murdered, North Port, 17 Jan 2008

  • #81
"I've heard neighbors say it and a few other people around the neighborhood say they think they've seen that car quite a few times at her house," says neighbor Geneva Blout.

But, North Port Police have yet to confirm any connection between Lee and the suspect in her disappearance, Michael King.

Another cyber-space crime?

With the above saying they've seen the car and the "I'm sorry,..." on the 911 call (in an article previous linked), makes me wonder if they met online and he wanted more?

Or

They discover they live close, she gives out a little too many details about her name or where she lives (isn't a picture of her house & her hubby's car on her MySpace page?)... :(

Just thinking of any and all possibilities just makes it that much harder for me to think about.

This is one of the saddest cases I have ever seen. It breaks my heart thinking of what she went through knowing she would probably never see her husband or babies again. My heart goes out to her husband, parents, and friends. It is so senseless. That cousin has a lot to live with. He is probably the only one who could have saved her. This is about the funeral.

One can actually feel the sad pall blanketing our little community. There is hardly anyone that is not familiar with the victim's father and it is really driving home to those that don't have the awareness like we here have, that yes - this can happen to anybody at any time.

I personally would like to see Rick pursue an activism approach for adding adults to the Amber Alerts in his daughter, Denise Amber's memory.

A third 911 call

Not long after, police said another 911 call came in, this time from Janet Kowalski who was traveling southbound on U.S. 41, stopped at the traffic light at the Cranberry Road intersection. She said a dark Camaro pulled up on her left: she even made eye contact with the driver.

The witness said the Camaro's passenger window was down and she could hear screaming coming from the Camaro "like she never heard before." The driver kept pushing someone down in the back seat.

She then saw woman's hand slapping the left passenger window hard as if trying to get out. Kowalski called 9-1-1 at once.

She said she tried to slow down to let the Camaro pull in front of her, but the Camaro would not pass; it moved in behind her car. According to the police report, she stayed on the line with the dispatch operator and reported each cross street they passed. Suddenly, the Camaro abruptly changed lanes and made a left onto Toledo Blade Boulevard, traveling north toward I-75.

Kowalski identified the driver as Michael King and identified the car as the same vehicle later apprehended by FHP Trooper Ed Pope.

Police have provided no information on how, or whether, Kowalski’s call was followed up.

It is a rude awakening when something like this happens in your own backyard. People often are in a false sense of security until they are faced with the ugly truths of what take place every day in every part of the country and on every social level.

I agree. I would like to see an Adult Amber Alert system in place. They have reverse 911 now in many places and it would be a start.

The woman in the car that saw and heard her fighting with him tried to save her life by calling 911. LE should have been on the scene immediately. The incident wasn't far from where she was killed and buried along the same road she saw him turn down. Where WERE they?!

NORTH PORT -- A witness called 911 and said she saw a woman banging on the window of a Camaro and screaming for help as the car made its way down U.S. 41 Thursday night, but the information apparently never got to officers searching for Denise Amber Lee.

Poor Denise, She tried so hard to live. Did police let her down? She could have been saved.

Oh, that is just SO sad for her father that they never received the information!!! His own "brotherhood" let him down. They should follow that up and fire everyone who dropped the ball on it. They COULD have possibly saved her!

But because Kowalski called 911 from just inside the Charlotte County line on Cranberry Boulevard, her call was handled by the Charlotte County 911 center. For some reason, the call was not patched through to the North Port police, who were directing the search for Lee

I think her dad is a Charlotte County sheriff. His own department may have dropped the ball.

As she drove south on U.S. 41 from North Port Thursday evening, Janet Kowalski heard a woman scream "like she never heard before." The scream came from a woman in the back of a car next to hers, a woman who was pounding on the window, trying to escape.

From that moment, Kowalski did everything she could to save the woman's life, a North Port Police report indicates.

She called 9-1-1 on her cell phone while trying to get the man driving the other car to pass her. Meanwhile, Kowalski told the dispatcher the name of each side street they passed as the two cars headed south, according to the police report.

What the report does not detail is what Charlotte County Sheriff's deputies did in response.

Both Charlotte and North Port officers were on the lookout for the suspect. And the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office had dispatched a helicopter to assist in the search.

Charlotte County Sheriff John Davenport responded to a request for an interview about his agency's response to the Kowalski 9-1-1 call by issuing a terse statement.

"The Sheriff's Office is looking into the entire case and evaluating all of our responsibilities, so we won't comment on anything until the North Port Police Department does," Davenport said Monday. He could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Just 16 minutes later, at 6:30 p.m., Kowalski called 9-1-1 as she drove south on U.S. 41 near Cranberry Boulevard, which is near the Charlotte County line.

After making eye contact with the driver of the car next to hers, Kowalski reported hearing "screaming like she never heard before coming from within the vehicle," states North Port Police Detective Chris Morales in an affidavit.

Kowalski also saw a woman's hand slap the passenger window as if attempting to break out. But the driver kept pushing her down, states the report.

Kowalski slowed down, hoping to get the suspect's vehicle to pass hers so she could get the license plate number, the report states.

Finally, the suspect's vehicle turned east on Toledo Blade from the center lane of U.S. 41.

Sooooooooo - now we are up to three woman that were this close to saving Denise. The cousin's daughter that called 911, this woman, and Denise herself.

He is.

Just great.......it's already election time around here and I predict now that this case will become a political platform on a level never seen in this little county before.

The same departments that received 20 phone calls from Yana Huss before her husband murdered her in front of her eight year old son. I can't even let mind start going there.......

I will be truly very surprised to learn that there was some sort of connection between Denise and Micahel King. I think he saw her somewhere, he stalked her, and he murdered her in one of the most chilling, premeditated cases of cold blood that I have ever seen. This case just absolutely breaks my heart. I agree with River Rat that it may end up being a very big political issue - and it possibly should.

Aww I just looked at her myspace page that someone linked and she seemed like such a beautiful sweet mommy.. This is horrible! I'm confused by some stuff though. Did this man know her or was this a total random stranger abduction/murder?

It certainly SHOULD be a political issue! Who is running that show and why are they failing their public miserably?! Now that something has happened to the daughter of one of their own...maybe they will get some answers to the reasons behind their failures.

Sounds good......if there wasn't such slim pickings on who our candidates are. Thank you all for saying what I held back from.

They need to bring in some potential candidates from the outside. They don't have to rely on only people who live in the area to apply for or run for positions. Someone should start a grassroots campaign to clean up the mess.

I found this in one of RiverRat's links. This is less than an hour from when she was abducted.

Long-time North Port resident Chuck Briggs reported to the Sun that he saw Denise Amber Lee around 1:45 p.m. Thursday at the North Port Post Office on U.S. 41. He remembered her struggling with a large package she was mailing, and he held open the door so she could enter. He did not see the two children with Lee. The witness also saw a man waiting in the post office line, about four people behind Lee, whom he now believes was Michael King. He said he made eye contact with King. The witness has reported this information to police.

Hey RiverRat don't be too hard on LE down there. I live about ten miles from where Jesse Davis was found. At least you don't have to deal with a Bobby Cutts.
