FL - Five killed, 8 wounded in shooting at Fort Lauderdale Airport, 6 Jan 2017

3 dead, 9 wounded ? is this gonna end up being terrorism ? When I first heard about this, I thought it was a domestic situation. The numbers kinda disprove that. Could be workplace violence I guess.

I had the same thought initially. Some personal domestic thing. But the numbers. Hmm.

Fox reporting per sheriff's department: 5 dead.

Yes they are, why are they not being surrounded by LE.

Hopefully, that will now change. Who ever thought it could happen at a smaller airport?!

I thought it may be another act of terrorism. There was another thread on WS last year about airport employees having ties to terrorists and some had worked there for years before this was even found out. Not very comforting. Unless it was a security officer how would they be able to get a gun in the airport? Oh that's right, TSA has a dismal 95% failure rate of detecting firearms and other destructive weapons in our airports. Gah!

I had mention in another thread just last year that they are going to start targeting smaller airports because they think our security agencies wouldn't think smaller airports would be selected as their target.

I don't think there are enough officers to surround every group of people waiting in lines. If there were armed officers at the baggage claim a shooter could just walk into the terminal and pick people off as they stood in line to go through TSA. Which someone did at LAX previously.
If that area was surrounded by LE then they could pick people off in their cars as they line up to go in and out. Or they could get people at a famer's market. Or the beach. Or movies at the park which we have here in CA a lot. Or a little league game. Or a traffic jam in a freeway which causes people to be sitting ducks.
There are far too many places where crowds assemble that can't be policed.

I know LE can't be everywhere, i was mainly meaning while all the people were waiting on the tarmack. I know I didn't specify, but they were sitting duck if there could have been another shooter. imo

What they (the terrorist) have been doing overseas is pull up right in front of the airport, or just a few steps inside the lobby, and detonate bombs or start shooting. No need to try and sneak thru security.........plenty of victims waiting to be <modsnip> right there at the entrance.

I was really worried the other day when the national computer system for customs and immigration failed that it was a hack designed to let terrorists in. Not saying that it had anything at all to do with this incident, but it seems so ubiquitous lately that we can't help but jump to the terrorist conclusion. So sad.

I know KCI out of Kansas City it a smaller airport and you really don't see much security around there. Plus it is pretty much in a rural area away from the big city.

I feel like once we make it past big events like New Years Eve, Christmas, and other large gatherings we tend to let out guards down until something happens. Especially on US soil. imo

Reportedly he was shooting OUTSIDE at the baggage counter. That is very worrisome. How do yo prevent shootings that happen BEFORE security lines?

Same issue with Brussels bombing, happened before security.

I know this. I don't believe all the excuses every time that it was just a computer glitch. I think they say that to save face. There have a been several so called glitches lately. Something is going on,imo.

Those people on the tarmac are lucky this happened in Florida and not in Minnesota, Ohio, or Chicago.....................Brrrrrrrrr ! would be miserably cold out there on that concrete.

They have an eye witness on Fox News national-----said he saw a guy holding a handgun, firing into the crowd. He was wearing a Star Wars T-shirt.......he emptied his gun and reloaded and kept shooting.

5'-10 to 6'-0 probably in 30's----- didn't say anything or yell anything while shooting....... Dark complexion. ....... Happened at baggage claim #3. Shooting lasted thru 2 clips, shooting went on for about 4 or 5 minutes

Witness was interviewed by Shepard Smith---------- They just told everyone to get down on the floor as this interview was happening. Supposedly something currently happening out in the garage.

It's really disconcerting when you hear an inbound pilot asking ATC where the shooter is :notgood:

ETA planes landing & taking off again already - great job ATC!

What makes you think you cannot have a gun in an airport? For one thing, you can have it in your checked luggage. Can people with concealed carry permits have guns in airports? Anyone can park their car and go into an airport. There is no screening to stop people from entering an airport.
