Santiago was a combat engineer in the Army National Guard, and served one year in Iraq before being honorably discharged last year, the Army Criminal Investigation Division confirmed.



I know someone that was on heroine in germany and he was able to get out and received an honorable discharge, so I don't take those seriously. Lot's of folks that are caught doing wrong in companies are allowed to leave with an unblemished record so they can gain reemployment.jmo

This is something that has really changed in the last 15 - 20 years. It used to be if you did as much as write bad checks repeatedly, you would be dishonorably discharged. The military used to expect the highest moral conduct of it's troops and officers. I think it's a reflection of what is going on in society in general. Lax sentences, no accountability for personal actions in general. MOO of course.

Seriously. I'm so past the humane treatment of these losers. It actually makes me doubt what kind of heart I have and question my own humanity, because, I'm at the point where I think just stick them in one of those old time zoo train carts and parade them around for people to throw rotten vegetables at. I don't even care what the WHY of what they did is, I just want them to know, they will have it so bad if they do something like this they would prefer the DP.

I see where you're both coming from but I think you need to differentiate between
1) Killers who kill for the sheer hell of it
2) Killers with verifiable psychological issues

I don't believe they are the same, nor should they be treated with the same contempt. No, I've (fortunately) never lost a loved-one to either of these types of people. But I have had close relations with mental health problems and have personally suffered PTSD myself, so perhaps I have more empathy to type 2 than others. For the record, I have no empathy for type 1 and think that type of killer should be executed post-haste!

Anyone who can plan, and isn't running around babbling incoherently, is in charge of their actions and can control themselves, IMO. Mental health issues only rarely absolve someone of responsibility and accountability. I think few mass murderers are other than deeply alienated narcissists who are fueled with rage and narcissistic panic.

Estaban went to FBI office in Anchorage, Alaska, reporting that he was hearing voices including voices telling him to join ISIS.
He was taken to hospital for evaluation where he voluntarily checked himself in.

Was employed at security company in Anchorage and those employers heard him talking about hearing voices.

No indication of terrorism according to LE.

Reports from several witnesses on his flight that there had been an altercation between him & a passenger/passengers. No incident requiring security meeting the flight upon arrival.

Estaban joined Puerto Rico National Guard in on Dec 14 2007
Then deployed for almost a year to Iraq from April 2010 to February 2011
Joined US Army Reserves before joining the Alaska Army National Guard
Received a general discharge from AANG 16 August 2016 (unsatisfactory performance)

Initially told FBI/LE that he came from Canada (in interview). Says he was a member of the National Guard but then "stopped turning up" which may explain him being discharged.

I don't know. The law certainly agrees with me. Of course when I say "can control themselves" I mean can prevent themselves from committing a crime. Can they control their thoughts or anxieties or depression? Or feelings of anger? Not always. Many people with mental disorders can't. But their actions in harming others? Yes. If they can plan to take a trip on a plane and decide calmly when and where to retrieve a firearm, load it and begin calmly shooting at random people, they have a choice and need to be held accountable for the choice they made. IMO.

To think otherwise is to cast the millions of people with mental health disorders as uncontrollable maniacs that are always a potential, imminent danger to society. And I don't believe that.

A lot of people hold up their index finger in photos. It may have nothing to do with Islam.

You will see the same index finger pointing upwards in many of the 'Old Masters' paintings symbolizing the Christian religion. Pointing to the source of their salvation. If the source of their salvation is in the painting the finger will point to the source.
