Even if a parent doesn't talk TO a child it would be highly unlikely the child never heard talking. Generally a parent who can't be bothered to talk to their child will likely put them in front of electronics. So that child will likely be watching TV and hearing talking that way. They will still learn to talk, even if not being spoken directly to.

There is also no evidence to confirm that she was the way she was, because her mother did not talk to her.

There is no doctor's report stating she was autistic and there are more reasons for not talking at the age of 4 than autism.

From all reports it seems to me she was a doting and caring mother who snapped for some reason. Possibly some mental illness; several mental illnesses are most likely to appear in women in their late 20's (ex: schizophrenia). Shakayla is 26.

My guess is she had no idea how to handle a child with autism.

Given that autism is highly inheritable it's quite possible that the mother was autistic herself.

TAMPA — The mother accused of abandoning her 4-year-old daughter to drown in the Hillsborough River was in court today as prosecutors argued that she should be held in jail while her first-degree murder case works its way through the court system.

Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren’s office filed a motion Friday stating that Shakayla Denson, 26, poses a threat to the community.

At the start of the hearing in front of Circuit Judge Wes Tibbals, Denson shuffled in with her hands shackled at her waist. She sat slumped in a chair, occasionally covered her face with her hands and appeared to be crying at times.

The judge heard first from a housekeeper who witnessed the incident, which happened Thursday, and then from the lead detective on the case, before denying Denson bail.

Well, seeing as she murdered a child, I don't believe the people interviewed were correct. She was being investigated for child abuse and she murders the child. That speaks volumes.

Hillsborough Circuit Judge Kimberly Fernandez declared Shakayla Denson incompetent Tuesday after reviewing reports from three doctors who have examined the defendant since her August arrest. The exams occurred because public defenders representing Denson cited concerns that she may be mentally ill or intellectually disabled.

The doctors' reports are confidential, so the exact nature of Denson's mental condition is unclear. The judge's finding means Denson will be sent to a state hospital to undergo competency restoration treatment before the case can continue. It does not mean she will escape prosecution.

I have seen parents struggle with special needs kids....and rhe challenges are real.

My child was non-verbal till 4. She is perfectly fine now, but she had an "unspecified processing disorder". I sought help and they did...they also advised me not to take her in to the Childrens Hospital here as she would be labeled the rest of her life under "Autism". She is now 12, plays violin in the top Orchestra (musically inclined, can play from hearing). It went away, but those times are rough early on for sure.
