Charlie Adelson trial: Potential jurors dismissed on Day 3 of jury selection

Jury selection continued for the third day in the murder trial of Charlie Adelson, who's accused of hiring the two hit men who killed law professor Dan Markel in 2014.

4:45 p.m. update: A jury has been selected and opening arguments will begin Thursday morning. Reporter Jeff Burlew reports that it appears seven women and eight men will be serving on the jury. That includes three alternates.

Jury selection continued for the third day on Wednesday in the murder trial of Charlie Adelson, who's accused of hiring the two hit men who killed law professor Dan Markel in 2014.

Josh Dubin, an attorney and jury consultant working with Adelson's legal team, spent the morning questioning 21 prospective jurors. Before he began peppering possible jurors with questions Tuesday afternoon, he acknowledged moments of levity earlier in the day in the courtroom. He then took a serious tone as he laid the groundwork for the defense's case.

“To this man, this is no laughing matter," Dubin said of Adelson. "This man has pleaded not guilty, and with that plea, he’s saying, ‘I didn’t do it.’ ”

At the end of the questioning, roughly half the prospective jurors who had been questioned as a group were struck from the panel. Other individuals who had been summoned to serve were called into the jury box for another round of group questions from the prosecution and defense.

Later in the day, Assistant State Attorney Georgia Cappleman asked a different round of jurors how they felt about the law that allows a person who planned a murder to be charged just the same as the person who pulled the trigger.

- The purchase was 2012, 2 years prior to murder ( cottonweaver adds, so how come it was still under warranty as per claim by WA to Isom during her police interview?)

Why would KM want Dan killed without Charlie’s knowledge. Makes zero sense. To me anyway given the evidence.

Clearly, the Adelsons have been huddling and came up with this crazy story blaming Katie for the murder and claiming extortion. You gotta give them an A for creativity.

Paying every month. So defense attorney claims CA had to make payments due to extortion and not "murder for hire." Why couldn't it be both? CA paid for the unbelievably gruesome murder and them gets blackmailed by the gang members he hired to commit the murder. The timing of the payments are not mutually exclusive, as both could have occurred.

Opening statements begin in a Leon County courtroom against Charlie Adelson, accused of orchestrating one of Tallahassee’s most shocking crimes — the murder-for-hire killing of Florida State University law professor Dan Markel.

Charlie Adelson, who turns 47 next week, faces charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy and solicitation for allegedly hiring the two hit men from Miami who stalked and killed Markel, his former brother-in-law, nearly a decade ago. Those two people, one a Latin Kings gang leader, the other his best friend, along with the woman who connected them to Adelson, have already been convicted and sent to prison for his murder.

Adelson discussed with Magbanua, the convicted conduit between him and the hit men, about whether the person who went up to his mom was a cop or blackmailer. He said it was a good thing if it was a cop because it meant investigators had no evidence to charge anyone, Dugan said.
