Could the deputy be married to his bio dad? sounds like the bio mom asked him how her son was doing? and fairly recently if she knew he was going to FSU. I don't think he would have been adopted out at 10 yrs old, if there was a custody battle. Parents have to lose rights or be deceased or something.
Maybe you can tell by her name? If she is an Ikner too, then maybe married to bio dad)

When I was growing up the only drills we had at school were for evacuating in case of a fire or earthquake, I cannot imagine my kids having to routinely go through active shooter drills

Anyway, back to the news

We just had a lock down drill today. We've had multiple actual lock downs. I have a district provided gunshot wound kit in my classroom. Some of our students are traumatized by these drills. Others just see it as something we do like an earthquake drill. (We evacuated Monday due to a rather large earthquake.) I have three children, teach at the same school as my spouse, know a victim of the San Bernardino terrorist attack (2016?), attended MSU (site of a mass shooting about 2 years ago), my best friend's son was at school in MI the day Ethan Crumbley carried out his attack, some of my coworkers were at the Las Vegas concert that was shot up (2019?), and my spouse knows people who were at the July 4 parade that was the scene of a shooting several years back. In October, a student was shot directly in front of my school after school by another student. I also have multiple students who were shot, one murdered and had a true crime episode made about his story. All of this has made these practice drills very difficult for me. I struggle to deal with our yearly refresher training. For me, it's not just a drill. I am thankful for those who have not had this experience.

Since the shooting suspect has been named, you can find some info looking at the Leon County court records - use his birth name.

its ok, Ive seen few adoption breakdowns, if a child doesn't feel like they belong, it can become a factor in how they act out. ,but I don't think he's adopted because of the custody battle. Almost sounds like mom took him and had to bring him back and dad got custody.

Seybold, who was president of the club, said he had to kick Ikner out of the group due to his beliefs and rhetoric.

And Riley Pusins, who is part of another political discourse club on campus that Ikner would attend, had a similar experience with the suspect.

Pusins said Ikner would attend meetings 'almost every Thursday' in which he would 'go up to the line' about what was acceptable discussions, but would often cross the line after the formal meeting ended.

Surprises me that if he's known as a "white supremacist and fascist" why wasn't he on LE's radar regarding that? Earlier reports say he was well known to the local sheriff's office and they seemed to speak highly of him. Lots of conflicting information coming out. I am curious about his digital information, I think that will be very revealing.

I am not sure what to think about the bio mom angle. Sounds as if, IF there was alienation, IMO there may have been good cause.

The woman absconded with him, at age 10, to another country, because they were in a custody dispute. Part of her consequences for that were to have no contact with the child. That isn't a thing bio dad decided. That was a court decision as part of her sentence for custodial interference. JMO based on what little we know rn.

Wondering if his "reasoning" is directed towards his step mom? He used her weapon, knew impact it would have on her since she worked for the Sheriff's department. Just throwing that out.

I don't think he has serious mental health issues. He has serious ideological issues. The fact that local LE speak highly of him and he openly espouses these ideas speaks volumes about how he interacts with others. No one is saying that he has had serious problems beyond his ideological statements and a refusal to tone them down. Of course, this is MHO.
