Marris said Florida prosecutors would have to consider a number of critical questions, among them: How did the alleged shooter access his mother’s gun? Did she let him use it? Did she know or should have known that he had a propensity for violence? Were there warning signs he would use a gun to shoot someone? Did she know he could access the gun?
“This is particularly important because if there was an awareness that he may be violent and the gun was left accessible then there could certainly be legal consequences for his mother on a civil negligence or possibly criminal negligence theory,” Marris said.”
According to the article, Ikner was prescribed medication for “emotional disregulation”, but had stopped taking it.
Emotional dysregulation is a bit vague, but I wonder if he had problems with anger. His friends said he had extreme political views, saying things like “Rosa Parks was in the wrong”.
He is still recovering from serious, but not life-threatening injuries. Once he recovers, he will be moved to a detention facility. I assume that means the county jail. I hope so. I hope he isn’t released on bail.
Since the killer is 20 yrs old, it’s unlikely the stepmother will face criminal charges, JMO, but will probably face a civil lawsuit for damages from the victims and surviving family.
The sheriff said the killer was deeply involved with activities in the sheriff’s department, so it wouldn’t be unusual for him to have access to weapons. One has to question the wisdom of that considering the killers extreme and violent views were well known to his friends. That’s not normal, JMO.
