The discovery was made around 8:30 a.m. on the beach near the 200 block of Crandon Boulevard not far from the apartments at Key Colony, Miami-Dade Police officials said.

That address (link) is on the seaward side of Key Biscayne, an island about five miles off the shore of Miami and six and a half miles south of Miami Beach.

A little bit of Googling shows several possibilities: Kevin McGrath, 26, missing from Port Miami since September '23; Luciano Mercenari, 29, missing from Key Biscayne since June '24; Ryan Proulx, 31, missing from Bimini (about 50 miles away) since June '23; Victor Castaneda, 19, missing from Miami Beach since last Saturday; and of course passengers and crew from countless lost ships in the area.

Authorities have confirmed that the human head discovered on a Key Biscayne beach belongs to 19-year-old Victor Enrique Castaneda Jr., the swimmer who went missing off South Pointe Drive over the weekend.

Victor Castaneda Jr., 19, disappeared while saving his younger sister from a rip current at South Pointe Beach on Saturday.

Looks like you were right. Apparently he saved his sister from drowning and he was unfortunately pulled out by a rip tide. It's kinda surprising to me that only his head washed up after that. I was thinking it was a murder and decapitation before I found this:

Victor Castaneda Jr., 19, and his sister were last seen going into the ocean at South Point Beach in the early evening of Saturday, Nov. 9, when they were overtaken by a rip current.

I'm guessing his body was struck by some kind of vessel. It's too soon for disarticulation due to decomposition.

Sleep well, Victor.

Without being too graphic, actually, it's not.

At least now his family will have something to bury. RIP, Victor.

I almost didn't include him because it was so recent. Poor kid. May he rest easy, and may his family have peace. Especially his sister.
