Glad he has been recaptured. Now it's time to ramp up security and keep this creep locked up for good.

Murder suspect Dayonte Resiles had less wiggle room to pull off any fast ones as he made his first return Tuesday to the same courtroom he escaped from 11 days ago.

Resiles was the only inmate present, the focus of five armed deputies, two bailiffs, a TV camera and several reporters in Circuit Judge Raag Singhal's courtroom 4810. He was escorted into the courtroom wearing a red jail jumpsuit and shackled at the waist, ankles and wrists.

During the hearing, Resiles' defense attorney, H. Dohn Williams, was granted an emergency motion to rescind a mental health evaluation that another judge had ordered for his client. He argued that it could affect the death penalty case for which he was jailed at the time of his escape July 15.

Resiles is due back in court October 7th.

He may be the most closely watched inmate in Broward County – having bolted from a courtroom on July 15, escaping from a supposedly secure courthouse and eluding capture for six days.

But accused murderer Dayonte Resiles has a right to pen and paper and he used it to send a one-page letter to Judge Raag Singhal – entered into his court file on August 29 as a "letter from defendant."

"I want to apologize for escaping from your courtroom," Resiles writes in a neat handwriting. "I hope you don’t take it personal because your (sic) one judge that I have great respect for."

(...)

In the one-page letter, Resiles for the first time publicly reveals why he says he escaped.

"I felt I was at a dead end with nowhere to turn to. I tried to appeal to everyone to prove to them I was innocent but my voice went unheard."

Some interesting statements in Resiles’ letter to the judge:

http://media.nbcnewyork.com/documents/resiles+letter.pdf

“Though my actions are not excusable, at the time I did what I felt was in my best interest. As you are aware I have been incarcerated close to 2 full years. I felt I was at a dead end with nowhere to turn to. I tried to appeal to everyone to prove to them I was innocent but my voice went unheard. Safe to say now I have received enough attention and people believe in my innocence.”
and
“When I escaped my whole reason was to gather enough info on my case to prove my innocence. As you can see I didn’t commit any crimes, hurt anyone, or go far. I just wanted time to prove my innocence.”

Not sure how I missed this case. So glad that juror stood up for what was right. I can't believe manslaughter is even on the table.

OMG, this is unreal. She is brave for speaking out. Prosecution needs to work on their jury selection process.

Foreperson: 3 jurors unwilling to convict Resiles based on race, leading to mistrial – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports | Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) - The foreperson of the jury in the murder trial of Dayonte Resiles said three jurors were unwilling to convict Resiles based on his race.

“[The three jurors] said, ‘I don’t want to send a young Black male to jail for the rest of their life or have him get the death sentence,'” said the foreperson.

After they compromised on manslaughter, she said, her courtroom change of heart led to threats from other jurors.

“You guys keep saying ‘a young Black man,’ but I don’t see race. I just see a human being, and you know, one particular person said to me, ‘Hey, if you were outside this courtroom, you would have gotten smacked out in the street for this,'” said the juror.
