"Media contact Donna Wood in the Polk County Sheriff’s Office told me that the although the investigation is ongoing, the department is looking into filing “lewd and lascivious” charges against another juvenile for getting her pregnant. She states that the rape shield law doesn’t apply."

Some people appear to have very strong desire to declare her a victim.
But it is just as criminal for a 14 year old female to engage in sex with another minor under 16 years of age.
So if the father is under 16, and she voluntarily had sex with him, they could add some charges to her murder charge for having sex with a minor.

Ya, I don't think of her so much as a victim of her boyfriend, just posted the link because it was the first time I saw what the father could be charged with. If he was found guilty, would he be labeled as an SO? Or not, because of his age?

Article above states no family members appeared in court with her, which I find strange. Article also states her attorney is going to try to get her out on bail, but with her questionable home life, I wonder if she would be better off, emotionally speaking, in custody.

I am not surprised the mother did not appear, but I thought someone from the family would be there.

There's a history of avoiding, ignoring or denying a problem exists.

She had no one in the courtroom. No surprise there. moo

I am upset that this child has not been named. He was a soul, a life. He deserves a name.

I have been calling him Michael in my head and in my prayers. For Michael the Archangel.

Has anyone seen a "real" name for this little man? If so, please post it. If not, I'll just keep calling him Michael...

Thanks in advance.

I would hope not. This kid will be branded for life for doing what most teenagers do, have sex with someone their own age. How is this possible?? Because neither of them used protection?? They are kids, stupid kids.

I'm new to this case, haven't read everything so I probably shouldn't even be posting yet, but from what I know, unless he IS the father and unless he knew she was pregnant and unless he KNEW she was planning on killing the baby, then no charges should be brought up against him. IMO She's the one who crossed the line from teen pregnancy to murderer.

What is wrong with this mother, why did she ignore all the signs....

*A team official said he and other coaches had confronted the mom about their pregnancy suspicions (other people are concerned for the 14yr olds well being, but the Mom isn't)

*two of the girl's aunts suspected the girl was pregnant and talked to the mother about it, but the mother had denied the girl was pregnant (her own family members tried to talk sense into the mom)

*Teresa Goodson said one of her sisters approached her and told her that there were rumors Cassidy Goodson was pregnant (rumors going around and mom denies them)

*Williamson said it was obvious the girl was pregnant. She was often seen getting off the school bus wearing sweatshirts on days when it was 85 degrees or hotter. She had been hiding her pregnancy from her family by wearing baggy clothes, including sweatshirts and jackets, for the past several months
(duh, Mom wake up, why is your daughter leaving the house in sweatshirts in FL)

These next 2 statements made by CG are very conflicting....

The Polk County Sheriff's Office said Cassidy Goodson knew she was pregnant and concealed it by wearing baggy clothing.

Donna Goodson, the girl's paternal grandmother, said Cassidy Goodson told her after the baby's death that, "If I knew I was pregnant, it would have been different

Williamson and several other neighbors told ABC Action News the teen had a sister who got pregnant at a similar age and was kicked out of the house. (WOW, this mom has been through this before, but yet denied/ignored it this time around)

This mother needs to be charged with neglect of her minor daughter. She obviously failed to look after her 14yr olds well being. All the signs were there, several others noticed them, brought them to her attention and she remains in denial or is just plain stupid. This mother needs some parenting classes to say the least!!!!

I don't agree she should be charged as an adult. Interesting that legally she is considered too young to make the decision to have an abortion. Science has proven that the brain of a teenager is not developed enough to make rational decisions. There are numerous scientific articles which state this.
(one example: http://www.npr.org/templates/text/s.php?sId=124119468&m=1).
The family of this girl is also very concerning. She was basically left to fend for herself, even now. I wonder if the mother even talked to her about sex or birth control.
I agree what she did was horrible and wrong. I certainly do not think she should be let off. But I don't agree with her being tried as an adult. I think she was in a desperate situation, with nobody to turn to. I can't say this act means that she is a sociopath who will never be able to lead a productive life, without compassion, maturity and remorse.

The law is gender neutral. A 14 year old having sex with another 14 year old is engaging in illegal behavior herself. And apparently sheriff believes its another minor who get her pregnant. And so, if two 14 year old are having sex, prosecution can charge each one of them.
That makes for a pretty stupid situation, in which each minor is both a victim and a perp.
So prosecution normally doesn't pursue these type of cases.

Just reading and catching up. I would think before they can start charging the 14 year old boy for having sex with this 14 year old girl, it needs to be established if they charge every underaged boy who had sex with every underaged girl who got pregnant.

To me, the only reason charges on the boy are being considered is because the girl murdered the baby. Had she just delivered and raised the baby, would he or she have been charged under the current law with illegal sexual activity????

If it's a regular practice that minors are charged with engaging in sexual activity, then both should be charged, if it's not, then neither should be charged. Once again, they were doing what most teenagers today do, they engage in sexual activity. To me, when they are the same age, it shouldn't matter. It should only matter when one is an adult and the other is a minor. IMO

Wendy, there are one or two links at the beginning of the thread, around page 2. The link from the Ledger worked best for me. It is the police report, I have not seen any medical reports yet.

I am in no way siding with the teen mother in this case... I however am haunted by the thoughts of a teen in the "transition" phase of labor... ALONE...
delivering a 9# (+) baby. I can't count the # of times I was present as a mother (during a natural delivery) said "GET IT OUT OF ME NOW!!!" I get why she used scissors to get him out.
I do not get why at that point she didn't call for help other than she had already planned to kill her child.

I have no empathy for her, beyond what she went through for those few minutes...
at any point prior to grabbing the scissors she could have changed the outcome.

I have a very bad feeling that she will be "out" shortly after she turns 21. Free to have more children. AND that will be that.

Kudos to her mom for calling LE and turning her in! She could have just thrown out the remains and stayed silent. I'm very thankful that did not happen!
moo

Just felt he need to say that...

From what the police report says, this child was alive even after the scissors. He was choked to death then.
And actually it wasn't the mother who reported finding the body to 911. It was mother's sister.

But mom didn't call 911, even after she found a dead 9.5 lb. baby. She put him in the sink and called a relative. Mom didn't do ANY of the things she should have done.
She could have taken this obviously pregnant girl to a doctor. She could have been supportive and decided what they were going to do, place the baby, raise the baby, and this poor little boy could still be alive.
Please don't think I am siding with CG. What she did was wrong, she murdered her child. It's just so sad because things did not have to turn out this way.

True, had the mother been proactive and actually acted like a mother of a teenaged girl, the outcome would have been so different.

In some families the worst thing a teenaged girl can do is get pregnant, they are pariahs in their family, shamed, disowned. It sounds like this is the kind of family this girl came from.

This girl obviously didn't think she had anyone to turn to or could see a way out of this once she realized she was pregnant. That's the sad part, none of this had to happen if she hadn't been so afraid to tell her mother she was pregnant. The mother must be a real gem. I agree to the CA comments, denial at it's best.

I hope they do DNA tests to determine if the 14 year old IS the father. They will, won't they?
