Navy veteran Margaret Hanley was last seen inside her home in Jacksonville, Florida on Feb. 9.

Her family, along with local police, are trying desperately to find the 72-year-old mother but have gotten few answers since her disappearance almost 10 days ago.

Hanley owns a 2001 silver Toyota RAV4 and based on cell phone activity, the car traveled through the northern Florida cities of Gainesville and Starke. Hanleyโ€™s family drove to Starke and shared a photo of their mother with gas station attendants. In recent days, her cell phone has pinged in Hinesville, Georgia. Her debit card was also used at gas stations in Georgia on Feb. 12.

But Thompson said his mother is not known for driving much at all, especially out of state. She also suffers from short-term memory loss, according to Thompson.

Despite limited resources from law enforcement, Thompson and his siblings will continue to look for answers in their motherโ€™s disappearance. Thompson has even reached out to a private investigator.

Authorities say the Jacksonville Sheriffโ€™s Office issued a Missing Person Alert for Margaret Hanley, 72, who is believed to be traveling in a silver 2001 Toyota RAV4 with Florida tag ESMF23.

After filing a missing persons report, Thompson says he reviewed his motherโ€™s bank account and discovered she had been sending large amounts of money to someone โ€” transactions he says were unusual and concerning. He believes she may have been the victim of a scam.

โ€œSheโ€™s a very friendly and smart person,โ€ said Thompson. "I just don't know how someone couldโ€™ve taken advantage like that.โ€

This video interview with her son includes a picture of Margaret taken at a gas station in Starke, FL.

Important: I'm reporting a mistake I made in the title. She is missing from Jacksonville, GA not Jacksonville, FL.

Nancy Grace interview with Margaret's son and a sgt from the Jacksonville County, GA sheriff's office.

There is a lot of concerning information in these interviews.

Thank you so much for starting this thread for Ms. Hanley. After watching the Nancy Grace episode this morning I came straight here, but didn't find anything. I wasn't sure how to properly start a new thread, so thank you!

It definitely sounds like someone is taking advantage of her financially. I hope they find her. I know her family is very worried.

Scamming of the elderly is so widespread. My Dad lost several thousand to a scammer before we put some controls on his banking and credit cards to avoid it happening again. If it was known Ms. Hanley had short term memory loss it's concerning she still had access to a car, but perhaps had never had an issue driving locally before. Her being missing may be unreleated to the financial anonomlies but that doesn't affect the possible risk to her physical well being if she is lost somewhere.

That is the phone number for the Jacksonville Florida Sheriffs Office (JSO)

I am not sure why there is the confusion between GA and FL. Her son and NG seemed confused about it as well...

A search is underway for 72-year-old Margaret Hanley, who is missingfrom her Jacksonville, Florida home, according to authorities and her loved ones.

After reporting Hanley as missing, Thompson said he discovered his mother had been sending someone unusual amounts of money after he looked at her banking transactions, according to First Coast News.

This led him to worry that she might have been targeted in a scam.

โ€œSheโ€™s a very friendly and smart person,โ€ Thompson told First Coast News. โ€œI just donโ€™t know how someone couldโ€™ve taken advantage like that.โ€

Since she went missing, Thompson told Action News Jax that he has seen withdrawals from her bank account.

She has been reposting "you will become rich" posts...no doubt all scammers. One guy who she reposted says on his FB profile that he is an astrologist and does marriage spells, ex back spells, lottery spells, third party removal spells ,etc. Crazy stuff.

I believe that Margaret's son does have good reason to be worried. Hopefully she shows up back at home not too much worse off than when she left.

@Unalienable Rights she is missing from FL you were initially right

Thank you. How strange that when the son said Jacksonville, GA, Nancy Grace stopped him and asked if it was GA or FL and he said GA, and she asked where that was. As it turns out, there is a Jacksonville, GA with a population of 130. It seems for sure, though, that FL is correct.

When I click on the FB profiles for her the posts are just pictures of her with various grandkids, I'm not seeing any "reposts".

Interesting. I wonder why that is.

I see a post in her timeline on Feb 6 (3 days before she was last seen) where the repost she made was someone saying "Don't skip...tomorrow when you wake up, check your phone. you will receive the BEST news you've ever heard. Send this to yourself immediately." And then a caption under that saying "being rich is your birthright".

The next post on Feb 1, Margaret says "Miracles do happen." and it is above a similar repost, again with the request to 'send this to yourself' in order to become rich. The 'send this to yourself' is a known scam. When you click on a post elsewhere (a scammer page) and they ask you to 'send it to yourself', they capture your personal info. apparently.

I hope LE is looking into the various people behind these scams!

Thompson explained that after filing a missing personโ€™s report, he reviewed his motherโ€™s bank activity and found โ€œunusual transactions.โ€

โ€œNot only was she sending money to someone, but just in the last week that sheโ€™s been missing, these transactions are being taken out,โ€ he said.

He said that some of the money was transferred into a mobile payment app in $200 increments and that family members also found a check written to a man for $12,000.

This article mentions a check she wrote for $12,000. In the Nancy Grace interview with the sergeant from the sheriff's office and the son (linked in post #2), the sergeant said that she wrote two large checks -- one for $12,000 and one for $10,000 -- and neither was cashed. They were both made payable to an elderly man who lives in Texas, and he has no clue what they were for. It sounds like he might be someone else who has been innocently caught up in whatever this scam is.

Margaret hasn't been seen for almost two weeks -- where can she be?
