Trump on Saturday said he was working with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry to send a hospital boat to Greenland, a Danish territory that Trump has said he wants to acquire.

"Working with the fantastic Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we are going to send a great hospital boat to Greenland to take care of the many people who are sick, and not being taken care of there. It’s on the way!!!" Trump said.

It was unclear what connection Landry had with the matter or if the post had any connection to the evacuation.

The U.S. Navy has two hospital ships, the Mercy and the Comfort, but neither are stationed in Louisiana.

From: New Greenland health agreement expands Danish hospital access | Euractiv
According to a report from the Greenlandic Health Councils, the country currently has 56 smaller health stations, 11 health centres, four regional hospitals and a national hospital, the Queen Ingrid’s Hospital in Nuuk. Residents mostly use a telemedicine app.
And the healthcare services are free for Greenland residents.

I doubt the US hospital ships can offer any more specialist care than the hospitals on Greenland, so this makes me wonder how many US submarines, and other naval vessels there are around Greenland now, and need to have access to a US naval hospital ship, or if the ship is going there to be waiting for patients to come later on?

I have been onboard one US naval hospital as a visitor in the 1990s, and what I remember, it was planned for basic care, more serious cases were to be transported to other military hospitals on land.

A U.S. Navy sailor was medically evacuated Saturday afternoon from an American nuclear-powered submarine by Danish military forces, according to a U.S. and Danish official.

The submarine broke from its mission and surfaced about eight miles from Nuuk, Greenland, an extraordinary step for a vessel designed to remain hidden beneath the sea in secrecy.

The sailor was airlifted by a Danish Defense Seahawk helicopter, deployed from the Vædderen, a Danish military patrol ship.

It's unclear what the nature of the medical emergency was, but it was not combat-related, according to the U.S. official.

The sailor is being treated at a hospital in Nuuk, Greenland's capital.

'It's On The Way': Greenland Has Free Healthcare, So Why Is Trump Sending Hospital Boat To The Island?

US President Donald Trump said the initiative to send a naval hospital ship to Greenland is "to take care of the many people who are sick, and not being taken care of there"

... The Trump administration’s justification for the mission – addressing local medical needs – has been met with widespread confusion.

Greenland and Denmark already operate universal, nationalised healthcare systems. This announcement has, hence, fuelled fears among local residents that American intervention serves as a precursor to the “privatisation of healthcare", as per a report published by CNN.

Ludvig Petersen, a Greenlandic municipal engineer, told CNN that his primary concern regarding American influence is the potential shift away from their current social services.

“I don’t like the idea of becoming part of America," Petersen said. “My primary concern is all this privatisation of healthcare and education. It’s not something we are used to."...

Given that there are 27 million Americans with no health insurance at all, and Greenland has universal coverage, it isn't Greenland where he needs to send the hospital ship!

They should reroute that boat to Puerto Rico, which is in the midst of a severe healthcare crisis. America first, surely.

Wait, what? Are there really that many sick people in Greenland?

I suspect Jeff Landry’s poor Louisianians could use this ship more than the Greenlanders. What a farce. MOO

Greenland has a taxpayer-funded, public healthcare system
that provides free, universal, and equal access to health services for all residents. The system is managed by the Greenlandic government, ensuring free treatment for citizens including primary care, hospital treatment, and prescription medicine.

Greenland does not need US hospital ship

..."The Greenlandic population receives the healthcare it needs. They receive it either in Greenland, or, if they require specialised treatment, they receive it in Denmark. So it's not as if there's a need for a special healthcare initiative in Greenland," Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen told Danish broadcaster DR.

In Greenland as in Denmark access to healthcare is free. There are five regional hospitals across the vast Arctic island, with the Nuuk hospital serving patients from all over the territory.

... Mr Lund Poulsen told DR he was not aware of the hospital ship's possible arrival. [Because it's undergoing maintenance in an Alabama shipyard!]

"Trump is constantly tweeting about Greenland. So this is undoubtedly an expression of the new normal that has taken hold in international politics," he said.

Separately, Denmark's Arctic Command announced that it had evacuated a crew member of a US submarine off the coast of Nuuk after the sailor requested urgent medical attention...

Trump Announces Greenland Hospital Ship Mission as Mercy and Comfort Sit in Alabama Shipyard

... The Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, said the deployment was unnecessary and politely declined with a “no thanks.”

“We have a public healthcare system where treatment is free for citizens. That is a deliberate choice — and a fundamental part of our society. That is not the case in the United States, where seeing a doctor comes at a cost.

“We are always open to dialogue and cooperation — including with the United States. But please speak with us instead of making more or less random statements on social media.”

Trump’s post came hours after Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command evacuated a crew member needing urgent medical treatment from a U.S. submarine near Nuuk, Greenland. It was unclear if there was any connection...
