FL - Mary Knowlton, 73, fatally shot by Punta Gorda PD officer, 9 Aug 2016 *Arrest*

So does this mean that the Chief will resign? Probably not.

Does it mean that he will do absolutely nothing, just like he did when his incompetent officer, let his dog chew on a bike rider for two minutes, because he didn’t have a light on his bike? Probably, yes.

Will the incompetent cop who killed the old lady resign, and then go and get a job with another department? Probably, yes. Thats the way he has operated before. It’s impossible to get rid of these incompetent fools.

Hi Kaaboom

What IMO makes this whole culture so much more nubming - in terms of how ingrained it is apparently is that it keeps going on and on. I really thought when the cell phone video started it would slow down at least.

It just gets more and more brazen, and even with media touching on the stories for a news cycle or too on it goes

In a way I guess its like if a child is told they cant have a cookie, keep taking one, and there are no consequnces, at some point it makes sense that the child will keep taking the cookies

The only problem here is people are being murdered. We have to be honest IMO, this stuff is no different than N Korea stuff -those in power just do what they want with no attention to paid to legality.

Its truly a very sad picture in terms of democracy and all that BS imo....

IMO , it has enormoues implications for this generation. Civililzed societies, in order to have order , need to respect the ones that are suppossed to keep it. I was watching "Cop Blockers" (a movment that randomly drives around , and finds cops interacting with the public, walk up and start taping them. Post on YouTTube.

While these folks are there I was struck by how so many passerbys- stopped - and started recording too.

My distrust and anomisity toward LE is from peronsal experinces 35 years ago. These are young kids, who I assume (especially if white males) have had no interactions at that point with LE, yet feel the overwhelming need to protect (their words not mine!) people from the police.

Stop and pause on that - it was strking to me while at the same time I was really glad it is going on. Yet, amazingly, and I am sorry but the only word coming is what it deserves ---when 6 kids are aiming their cell phones at them from 4 feet away they continue to be total dic*s -complete asswh#les.......................its messed up.

Most of these folks did not get into the vocation for alturustic reasons. These are folks that IMO, have severe mental issues as it relates to power , control, insecurity, self esteem with some narcissim thrown in for good measure - they need treatment.

They also need to psyc evaluated before being handed arrest powers, guns, handcuffs and a car with lights on them.

FOlks of an older era, can keep stomping their feet about how terrific, brave and all that stuff these folks are- have to be folks that do not watch the news any longer.

Living above a cop a year or so ago mortifed me. What was so bothersome? He was young. His interactions with his wife, dog , me other neighbors were socipathic-quite chilling honestly.

That was one of the first things that struck me when PUlse was breaking - oh god he is gonna be there -(worked third shift) a raging homphobic (intense) yuk.

I swear, I would not be surprised if the cop , (body cam releases) that was clearly amused and thrilled , in awe etc upon entering the club was him . "Holy sh$t" , laugh, with an exclaimation mark repeat several times. INtonation sounded like a kid in a candy store -visualized him being wide eyed , with a smile , glancing around the dance floor with amasement - not the amazment that is "normal" -- a thrilling amazement....................

And white male folks in power remain blind.......(I am a white male- just for the record!)

The Daily Mail claims he himself loaded the gun.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...live-rounds-instead-blanks.html#ixzz4H46QCE5T

So how stupid is this guy and how did he get to be a police officer?

more from this link

371C2E8E00000578-0-image-m-2_1470915918660.jpg

He was dressed as a 'criminal' during the role play incident where the tragic incident occured...

If this image in and of itself does not have impications ???

The trauma of the "audience" should not imo be overlooked either.

I never really realized, until I saw this pic that community services patrols are being trained like this.

This is silly - they should be roll playing scenes on how to call 911 when they see seomething while driving in a fake cop car - totally inapproriate to be training retired bakers or libririans any thing about GUNS

Are these people armed?? It cant work both ways - if LE is saying give some elderly person an 8 week role play class and have the same powers as supposedly "real" ones someones elevators are not going to the top floor.

I thought they drove around to have a car looking like a cop car as a deterent - I did not know they were playing cops and robbers

Obserd

Punta Gorda officer resigned from last job amid two investigations
http://www.news-press.com/story/new...ief-accidental-shooting-takes-blame/88583182/

Tania Rues, Miramar police spokeswoman, said Coel resigned amid two internal affairs investigation against him alleging excessive force.

As a trainee, the rookie officer had trouble with finding directions in the east coast municipality. Trainers noted he often got flustered during "hot calls," which led him to stress.

Coel was described as a good trainee who was willing to learn from his mistakes, but ultimately his lack of orientation was becoming a hazard to other officers because he often got lost when he was called for back-up.

I really hope whoever was responsible for hiring this obviously unfit officer is held accountable. They seriously couldn't hire anybody better than somebody that was FORCED to resign from another department?

You know what? I know I am in the minority here and to be honest, I can't help feel sorry for both sides of the families involved. I couldn't live with myself knowing that I accidentally shot an innocent woman, but I can still her son's voice in my head, saying,

"There's too much hate in this world, in America, we always feel like we need revenge and it doesn't solve anything," Steve Knowlton said. "I obviously can't say it's easy to forgive, but it needs to be done. She's watching me now."

If one were to dig deeply into someone's past I am certain there would be all kinds of skeletons found. MSM certainly loves to make things a lot worse than what typically happens.

I hope I am not offending anyone, I can't help but feel sorry for the whole incident that happened. I am only expressing my deepest sympathies for both victims.

This is part of what is wrong with the system. This whole mentality that they have to "protect their own" is severely flawed. This officer was forced to resign for excessive force (which followed him to Punta Gorda, obviously) and was even a hazard to his fellow officers, yet here he was... trusted to protect US? His "lack of orientation" and easily "flustered" obviously played a role in this tragedy.

Do I think he's a horrible man? I don't know? I'd have to know more about the other cases of "excessive force." Do I think he intentionally set out to kill this poor woman? No, I don't. He was definitely not fit to be a police officer and that's okay. Not everyone is fit to be a police officer (as is becoming evidently clear here in the US). Some serious changes need to be made. It shouldn't be this easy to become a police officer and it sure as hell shouldn't be so easy to get hired in another Department if there were issues at a previous Department.

Of course we all have skeletons, but when it comes to a police officer, their skeletons should NEVER include being forced to resign from another police department. Not everybody is fit to be a police officer, it's as simple as that. I'm more frustrated that he was rehired by the Punta Gorda police than I am at him for making the mistake and shooting that woman. I do feel sympathy for the officer. I'm mostly appalled that shooting blanks at a citizen was even a "thing" in the first place. I'm really interested to hear what other police departments around the nation think of this exercise.

Also, can somebody explain to me what the point of a citizen's police academy class is? Seems like a good excuse to get overtime for the officers instructing the class IMO.

I have absolutely NO sympathy for the officers involved in this travesty.

None at all. What the heck were they thinking? I noticed something in the photo of another officer handing the victim a gun. As I see it, there were people standing in the line of fire if it had fired accidentally.

I don't support or see the purpose of this type training, but IF it is to take place, it would seem gun safety would be the first priority.

I've shot since I was a kid (daddy liked to prove I was better than his nephews, lol), and I can not believe the careless way these officers handled guns.

"If Officer Coel, who led the exercise despite the fact he’s not a certified firearms instructor, or his supervisor had written a lesson plan and submitted it for approval, maybe someone in his chain of command would finally have realized that shooting at a retiree was probably not a good idea. In fact, maybe someone would have realized it’s one of the dumbest and most dangerous training exercises ever conducted."

August 9, 2016 11:16 PM EDT Woman fatally shot by Fla. police officer during gun demonstration
During a "Citizen Police Academy" session on Tuesday night, two participants were randomly selected from the group of 35 community members in attendance to be put through a "shoot/don't shoot" scenario.
https://www.google.com/amp/www.cbsn...ficer-during-gun-demonstration/?client=safari

Not been following this, sorry if already . Am confused about who actually sponsored this 'academy.' (I know shooter is/was w PGPD)

City of Punta Gorda refs to CitizenAcad (no Police)
http://www.ci.punta-gorda.fl.us/residents/citizens-academy * refers to " various City departments and services they provide to the community."
Does not appear to cover just law enforcement.

Charlotte County Sheriff's Office ref's to Citizens' Pol Acad.to 8 sessions, all law enforcement topics.

"The City of Punta Gorda Citizens Academy is a free, eight session course of interactive classes designed to provide insight into City government and to develop future leaders through well informed and civically engaged residents. The Academy is designed to give citizens an up-close and personal look at how City government functions and helps shape our community...." bbm

** "Sheriff Bill Prummell invites you to attend the next Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office Citizens' Police Academy. The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office Citizens' Police Academy was established in January 1999.
The Citizens' Police Academy is an 8 week (includes graduation) program designed to give the public a working knowledge of the Sheriff’s Office. Each session consists of eight consecutive weekly night classes at Sheriff’s Office facilities. The instruction is comprehensive and each week separate areas of the Sheriff’s Office are covered.
Homicide, Use of Force, Internal Affairs, S.W.A.T., Forensics, Recruiting and meeting the Sheriff are examples of some of the topics that are covered. Instruction consists of lectures, demonstrations, tours, and riding with a deputy on a twelve-hour shift.
We hope the graduates of the Citizens' Police Academy become more aware and better informed about how the Sheriff’s Office operates, and will encourage friends, coworkers and families to join the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office in this rewarding program." bbm

Maybe they should cut the number of cops, and use the savings to hire higher caliber LEOs. I have seen police chase videos where up to 70 cops are involved by the end of the chase, and they all hang around after the chase. Does it really take 70 cops to capture one fleeing suspect? I think 10 would be over kill. I have see over 10 cops at a location to arrest one non violent suspect who is not resisting. Two cops should be able to handle that.

Cut the ranks, and require the remaining officers to have higher education, and better training.

I would view Police Unions as the number one reason these bad cops are still on the streets today. Budgets certainly play a part, but I think that's a secondary issue when the unions blindly back officers when there are clear indications that they are unfit for duty.

Gee Em - I feel sorry for him too- as a person. Obviously he has altered his life as well. My deal is more about the class itself and him being in that vocation. Its not about him personally - he has some issues obviously, many do.

Its was also very strange in that he went to collage to be a vet assitant - I cannot imagine two more opposite areas of interest. Snuggling a doggie or slinging hand cuffs on another human being are pretty much polar opposites - there are some very "odd" things emerging here moo

Coel violated the Miramar Police Department's code of conduct after surveillance video showed him yanking a suspect by the legs out of a police cruiser."
http://www.local10.com/news/florida/officer-in-fatal-role-playing-shooting-got-overly-excited-on-job
Good lord, in one instance he turned on the heat in his car and kept a detaineed in the car with the heat on. There is no reason IMo he should have terminated that afternoon. That is flat out cruel. Indicative IMO of some very disturbing issues -- think about it -- even coming up with the idea is pretty deviant in and of itself - but then doing it - there are some problmes here!!

But I remain empathetic for his entire sitution - he loves doggies!! Boy am I gonna get it for that huh?

Maybe they should cut the number of cops, and use the savings to hire higher caliber LEOs. I have thought this so often! in tons of events you see 18 cop cars and 92% are chatting. I have always wondered what is happening in the areas all those cops are supposedly needed.

If it a cop down forget it the whole department goes over there- what happens to all the other calls when they are all running around in two block area??

Since this broke, I can not even get the premise of the class.I may be wrong, but I was just under the general beleif that people who have guns can shoot someone if they come into there homes.

Where would one need a class on to shoot or not - if someone breaks into your house they are not there for a chat -shoot-- if you have a fight with a family member or neighbor dont shoot.

The notion that for civilians that there are a whole array of "incidents" where one needs to ascertain bang or no bang just befuddles me??

Of course we all have skeletons, but when it comes to a police officer, their skeletons should NEVER include being forced to resign from another police department. So agree, a punch of nonsense - departments that want good community relations need to be investing in senstivity training for THERE workforce. At taxpayers expense running a bunch of PR classes is for private sector or congress!

Ride alongs by citizens in todays climate are a recipe for disaster. Even more so today inlight of ever growing disdain for LE. Someone who wants to know what it is like drving around in a cop car can go onYou Tube, not on the taxpayers dime.

And we have to frank, in a real dangeroues sitution having me in your cop car while bullets are flying would be a distratcion! Its from the feel good 50's - days long gone, and IMO flat out dangeroues, has no merit or reason, and to be more consise inane. I did not know it was still going on until Pike County and I thought it was moronic when I found about it then.

So I suppose we can say one good thing happened after this tradegy in that they all will be shut down, thankfully. moo

And an officer like me, where everything always feels "north" in and of itself should be a rule out for me to be a cop. Again stuff is emerging, a vet generally speaking is of a different temperant than a cop. Getting lost all the time (me!) is a persoality cluster - by that mean typically folks are in one general direction or not.

Like creative, versus good at math. Organized or cluttered, big picture or detailed.

If one was given a vocation test - an individual that tends to get lost on the list of possible vocations for that individual would not be a cop!! I think you get what I am poorly trying share - anyone know anything about his dad?

Wondering if there was some daddy push to be a cop.................or mom...brothers ...a unique "something" is emerging!

However going to school to be a vet asistant, and end walking around with a badge on are IMO, quite bizaire moo

Weinberg said he doesn't believe Coel intended to harm Knowlton, but he should be charged with involuntary manslaughter

son Steve told NBC News earlier that he forgives Coel.

Ironically, its a good thing the dog did not maul the poor guy more - the cop during the nauling gave backup officers the wrong location - you can hear the other cop telling him basically you mean you were on Smith street but said North street that is why it took us so long to find you.

If backup arrived sooner maybe the whole thing could have avoided mo, the female cop imo voice sounds like she is not quite Ok with the sitution - thats just my take tho

he attorney went on to say that “if you watch the video, from the first thing the officer says, he tried to stop my client for not having a light on his bicycle and he says, ‘Stop or I’ll send the dog.....In fact, I demanded that he be fired, but they protected him."

Punta Gorda Police Chief Tom Lewis said, “Poor decision-making in this particular instance did not warrant discipline. We provided the officer extra training, we switched trainers, and of course we restricted that policy to make sure that his decision-making in the future is in accordance to the way we want to do business.”

He also stated that “there was some irrational behavior where he [suspect] punches the ground with his bare fists, some profanity, but being physically aggressive at some point, I did not see that.”

a K-9 expert was called to investigate the incident....

Coel ........... frequently gave department presentations and tours, "specifically role-playing in these shoot/don't shoot scenarios," police spokeswoman Lt. Katie Heck said. department has been doing the exercise for about two years.

News-Press reported that he failed to complete an agency field training program.

The officer is grief stricken and other officers have been assigned to him to make sure he's psychologically stable.
