The gunman who killed 49 people at an Orlando gay nightclub Sunday sent a text message to his wife during the rampage, asking "do you see what's happening?" a source close to the family told NBC News Thursday.

The source close to Salman said Mateen's mother called Salman at around 2 a.m. Sunday, waking her up and asking if she knew where Mateen was.

Salman said she did not know, and texted her husband: "Where are you?" the source said.

Mateen responded: "Do you see what's happening?"

Salman replied "No?" according to the source.

Mateen then responded "I love you, babe."

The article says a federal law enforcement officer confirmed that the text exchange took place at around 2:30 am.

So what prompted his mother to make a 2 am call?

Salman was told what happened at 4 a.m., when police called Salman and told her to come out of the home she shared with Mateen with her hands up, the source close to her said.

I sure wish they had listed these white jihadists by name who have done terror attacks/plots on our soil.

Do they mean the ones who have gone overseas to fight with ISIS?

I am having a hard time remembering any white guy here who either did radical Islamic terrorist attacks or plotted them. Do you know any of their names?

I am interested in only the ones who have done terroristic acts or plotted to do so that was here since the subject at hand at the moment is radical Islamic terrorists attacking us on our own soil.

If they are talking about the ones who go over to fight with Isis I can only hope they are all killed while over there. Anyone who goes overseas to fight with any fanatical hate group such as ISIS shouldn't ever be allowed back into our country and their citizenship should be stripped. IMO That's one way to keep them off of our soil and out of our country.

Don't forget San Bernadino, where the neighbor was afraid she'd look like she was profiling if she reported what she thought was suspicious activity. Even though her profiling was dead on. As was the dude's who denied OM a gun sale.


They (the terrorists) see us in the West for what we are. A bunch of schmucks that are like fish in a (weapon free zone!) barrel, because we don't want to look like profiling bigots, or hurt anyone's feelings.

I'm wondering if he called his parent's house to say goodbye before he started. If that's the case then why didn't he also call his wife at that time? Or did he?

Or perhaps his mother is a night-owl FB surfer and saw the FB posts he made before 2:00 am that morning.

Playing devil's advocate. Say he was visiting Pulse for personal reasons and not for scouting the site, he could have told his Mum or she may have found out (with or without his father's knowledge). This may explain why she phoned her DIL - worried he might have been there. But IMO this falls apart when you look at the contact between him and his wife during the hostage situation when compared to the texts between victims and their loved ones. There were no desperate texts from her (that we know of) - are you ok, what's happening, are you hurt, can you get out. So she must have known he was the offender not a victim. I wonder if she immediately phoned LE to tell them...hmmmm....

In any case, I'm glad this stuff is coming out. It will end up like the other murder cases we follow - the story gets told by the cell phone records, the texts, the facebook postings, etc.

Whether sanctioned leaks or not, I heartily thank the leakers!

I'm too skeptical/cynical to believe anything coming out at this point. Too many conflicting stories, etc. I wonder if we will ever know what really happened.

She is blaming the press for saying things that aren't true.

She is talking out of both sides of her mouth IMO...

I say that because she apparently told conflicting stories to friends about whether she knew or not....

After he was turned down at the first store he was almost certainly a lot more careful (i.e. less creepy) at the second location.
