FL FL - Miami Beach, WhtMale UP6736, 30-40, 6'9" & 335 lbs, drowned, Dec'09

Was this UID confirmed to have a fleur de lys tatoo? (I saw discussion about a proposed match having one, but Namus doesn’t list one for our guy.)

Regardless, it’s also used on the World Scout Emblem.
You're correct. Tommy Daniels the missing guy with the Fleur de lis tattoo is on the rule out list as well.

Good find, although I'm not sure this could be him. No fleur de lit tattoo mentioned, but that could be an "unknown" at the MP site. I'm also wondering if he would have worn just a black short, being on a fishing ship, but maybe he was sleeping when the boat accident happened.
I'm very sorry. My bad. The UID doesn't have a fleur de lys tattoo. He has no tattoos (mentioned). I was mixing things up in my brain.

Re: the height

He's unusually tall, but while that narrows the possibilities significantly, it's still a sizable population.

I've seen estimates in articles about NBA players that about one percent of the male US population is over 6'8" or thereabouts. With the US population at around 325 million, that would mean about 160,000,000 males, and one percent of that would be around a million and a half men that tall or taller, give or take.

Plus he could be from Europe, Canada, other parts of the Caribbean, Russia, even Turkey (I've known some very tall people from Turkey.)

Bump for the big guy. I've taken to searching old football rosters that have pictures... running out of ideas.

Well, how about sending his picture to men's Big & Tall retailers? Granted, too much time has past.

I'm a woman, 5'10", and Land's End could tell you that I've only ordered Tall pants from them. I suppose a retailer might tell LE about such a buying habit?

big man shows an update date of today. not seeing any additional information, might be another rule-out; here are the current comparisons(12):

By 2009 cruise ships were blanketed with cameras. No way.

People still 'fall' off cruise ships, but you are right. Almost all of them are recorded by the many cameras. I would think LE in Florida have all cruise ship companies on speed dial when a body washes up on shore since there are six cruise ports in Florida and five of them are on the Atlantic coast. I tried to find out if there were any cruises that left Miami around that time but most of them sailed between Dec 10 to the 20th. If someone was supposed to embark on a cruise and they never showed up what does the cruise line do? I know when people miss their cruise through late flights, etc, it's up to them to inform the cruise line to see if refunds are available but what if a passenger never informs the cruise line?

I know this UID is big; a noticeable height that people would remember but his size doesn't necessarily mean he might have been involved in sports. A building I worked in had a guy nearly this tall but if you were in the elevator with him the last thing you'd ever joke about would be if he played basketball in school or football, you know the usual stale joke that tall guys hear all the time. This guy was big, but he was knock-kneed with a lumbering walk.

I was also wondering about the Speedo bathing suit. Was it the classic brief style Speedo or board shorts? Except for a couple of gay guys I know, most North American men wouldn't be caught dead in the brief style, they are much more comfortable wearing loose fitting board shorts and have for decades. However, the UID's legs were hairless and lots of swimmers shave their body hair. We don't know if he shaved his legs, which would be nice to know, or whether the lack of hair on the lower legs was related to rubbing against tight fitting trouser legs. It wouldn't be uniform if it was the latter.

He was found on Christmas Eve, which is sad in itself. It is the time of year that families usually try to spend together. If he had family close by wouldn't they have rung the alarm if he went missing, especially if he was in Miami to visit family?

I was trying to find out tall people who were missing. Kind of a lost cause really. But I did happen on a webpage that identified lots of people from the UK who had gone missing. I found a guy called Alex Humphrey who went missing in Panama in August 2009. His family say he is slightly autistic and call him a 'gentle giant'. Here are a few pics I found. What do you think? His pics from family show him with fairly cropped short hair but you can easily see the shape of his ears, nose and mouth.

Very interesting find @branmuffin. Thx for still searching. His eyebrows stand out to me.

A part from this article, his mom speaking Alex Humphrey: British tourist missing in Panama

"It's very difficult, because every hypothesis we come up with has been shot down. If he had been kidnapped, there would be a ransom demand. And Sinaproc says that if there had been a mugging that went wrong, the muggers would be unlikely to hang around to get rid of the body. The explanation I find easiest to live with is that Alex has wandered off the tourist trail and has had an accident, slipped or tripped. But Sinaproc feel this is also unlikely because by now he would have been discovered.

There is not much about his height and weight, eye color, but when he went missing he was 29 yrs. old. I think his birthday is August 8, based on posts on FB 'Find Alex Humphrey' Find Alex Humphrey | Facebook There is other info on there too about what they think happened to Alex, but they are not 100% sure, because his body has never been found.

The "thing' is; Alex seemed to be close to his family, if he went to Florida, especially around Christmas time, why wouldn't he tell his loved ones. You never know off course what goes around in somebody's heart and mind, but it seems out of character.

In no way helpful but I feel this man is definitely from another country.
The average height for males in the Netherlands is 6 feet. Scandinavian countries have average male heights above global averages as well.
There are, in my opinion, two likely situations working together in this case:
1- this man was travelling alone (and far from home).
2- he did not disclose to anyone in his life to where he was going or that he was even going anywhere at all for that matter.
The speedo screams foreigner to me :)
Really would love to see this guy identified.

I agree. It can be hard to search for missing people from other countries aside from the interpol notices, as I have found looking into this case.

Just to summarize all the various sources, so it's in one place, adding my own thoughts, etc. The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)

Hair Color: Brown, short
Eye Color: Brown
Distinguishing Marks/Features: Face is clean shaven; lower legs and ankles are hairless <could be a symptom of an underlying decease, could have been caused by certain clothing, could have been shaven, but they would have noticed that, like the shaving of the face; nothing about his chest hair (shaven, hairless), so my guess is, it wasn't remarkable and there>
NO tattoos mentioned
<I wonder about the bump near the right side of his nose, was it just a pimple or something more permanent, or a recon distortion?>
Cause of death: accidental drowning. There were no obvious signs of trauma. <?, was he swapped of his feet by a big wave, because he had his shoes still on. I'm still wondering about this COD. I think he had heart failure problems or lost full consciousness for another reason and that's why he ended up in the water in the first place, eventually leading to his drowning>
Per autopsy: alcohol and codeïne in blood. <This can cause drowsiness. Opioids and alcohol are not a good combination> <Codeine.

Does somebody happen to have a subscription to this paper? I would like to know what's in it. Investigators try to identify hundreds of bodies in Miami

Theories from the thread. Sorry upfront if I missed something
  • Drifted in from some place else
  • Fell of a (cruise) ship, pier, freighter
  • Was jogging and took a dip
  • Went for a late night stroll, left ID/wallet in hotel
  • Could be a former defensive line man/American football player, NBA player, strongest man contestant, wrestler, swimmer, etc. going of the grid
  • Could be a tourist from abroad
  • Could possibly be from the LGBTQ community in the area
  • Explanation for not finding a bag f.i. with other belongings: tractors pulling machines that are scooping up trash from the beach
  • Might have been suffering from undiagnosed CTE, causing al kinds of symptoms, getting more severe over time
  • Could have gone missing years earlier and gained a lot of weight, making him less recognizable
  • The decedent can be known to have drowned (fallen off a boat or a pier, for instance) but the body wasn't recovered at the time, so presumed dead and not reported missing
  • The entered 6'9 is off and 69 inches = 1,7526 meters is meant.
  • The man was travelling alone (and far from home) and didn't tell anybody where he was planning to go.
  • The tight Speedo could point to him being gay or not American, because they tend to wear more wider swimming trunks.
